# The Rainbow Serpent continued

Today we brought together our learning of the Rainbow Snake story and the children listened again to the story and then reflected in their black books about the story. They had to think about what the Rainbow Snake created and demonstrate this in both written and pictorial forms.

# Math Focus- Fractions

The Doorbell Rang!

Tell me what happened in the story…

Henry: The mum maked some cookies

Johnny: People rang, their friends rang the bell

Hayley: The door bell rang

Ishaan: They said no one makes cookies like Grandma

How many kids were there at the beginning?

Krish: Two kids

What did mum first have to do with the kids?

Krish: She made 12 cookies and the two kids were going to eat them

What did we do to solve the problem?

Dion: Giving them out

Yianni: We need to share them

Cooper: We need to share them with the same amount

We used cookies and plates and demonstrated what happened in the story when the cookies had to be divided out.

The children in 1JM then recorded their learning on the white boards, trying to represent how the cookies were divided to the children.

Today 1Mr we revisited fractions – we used the white boards, file tiles and the story when the door bell rang. Our learning was expressed through drawing, creating, story telling and writing.

# The rainbow snake in dreamland – Yurlunggur in Alcheringa

Today we read the dream time story called Yurlunggur in Alcheringa  – The rainbow snake in dreamland to the children.

The children then reflected upon this story using the language of art to express their ideas. The children’s work has created a beautiful display on the wall.

# Fractions Investigation

Watching the above numberjacks episode prompted  discussion and questions about fractions. The children were introduced to new mathematical words, processes and understandings. After reflection the children continued to demonstrate their understandings of fractions using a range of materials including play dough, pencils, puzzles, loose parts, white boards and lego.

# Grammar

We watched a clip about vowel bat and we reflected upon the new information we heard and saw in the clip.

Talyn – It was a vowel bat

Ishaan – It had different alphabet in it  – it had u-bat and o-bat

Ezekiel – a-bat and e-bat

Kayden – They connected it to make a-e-i-o-u

Jayden M – They are vowels and I have two vowels in my name. They are a and e.

Then we continued to explore our learning about vowels and alphabetical order through writing and recognising upper case and lower case letters.

# Friday 1 June 2018

Thank you for your support of Mission Week activities. Listed below is the program for the activities on Mission Day on Friday 1 June 2018.

The purchase of tokens will be available from class teachers on Friday 1 June.  Students will only be able to use tokens to purchase items and participate in the activities, as we do not take money at the stalls.

Tokens are available in 10c portions with each page of tokens costing \$5. The money raised going will go to Fred’s Van, Catherine House and the Loreto Vietnam Orphanage.

# Writer’s Workshop

Today for writer’s workshop we worked on building a narrative. A narrative tells a story. They have a setting- where and when, some characters- people, animals or objects and a plot- events that happen in order.

We wanted the children to think about what happened first, in the middle and then at the end. As a group we discussed these things before moving off into our writing groups.
