MUDLA Visit

We are very lucky to have so many different resources at Holy Family Catholic School that we can use to create real-life learning experiences.

For maths today, we visited the MUDLA and used our learning about money to buy some fish!

Each animal had a price that we recorded and we added the prices together to know how much we spent all together.

Thanks to Mr. McCarthy for helping us and who helped with an extra special surprise, take a look at our work today!

Kitchen Experiments

In science this term, we have been looking at the different ways an everyday object can be changed and if it can go back to exactly how it was originally.

Yesterday, we tested our thinking with bread and chocolate..

What are some ways that things can be changed in the kitchen?

Monique – we can put something new

Williams – we can make the table a different colour

Sam – you can change a food buy cutting it up
Emily – you can cook pasta, first it was hard and then it gets soft.

Catharen – when you’re making chicken nuggets, you put them in the oven and if they get too hot they get burned.

Aisha – you put stuff in the oven and it gets hot

Senay – you can change food by eating it

Liya – you can change noodles into making them wiggly

Arnav – you can burn pasta and it will be hot.

Ali – when you are making a cup of tea you have to make the water hot.

Tri – when you cook the pasta its hard and then it gets soft.

Isla – when you put stuff in the fridge it gets cold.

Laura – when you cook some noodles it turns from hard to soft.

Angelo – when you’re doing science, you put the stuff you made in the fridge. It gets cold on there.

Williams – if you make something too hot you can put some water and leave it there and it will cool off. Or you can put it in the freezer and wait.

Mary – when you buy ice cream and you leave it outside for 20mins it will melt. When you open it it will be like water and you can drink it.

Azaan – you can eat and change it.

McKayla – cooking something.

Campbell – you can cook it.

Owen – when you eat pasta and you cook it it will get hot and then you can eat it and it wont be hard.

How did you change your materials?

Kevin – I rubbed the chocolate together and it melted. I can’t change it back.

Campbell – we put holes in the bread. You can’t go back.

Monique – we broke the chocolate in pieces. We put it back like a puzzle.

Sam – Ali and I put it behind the fridge and Ali’s hands were so warm that it melted the chocolate. You can’t change the chocolate back.

Tri – I broke it into pieces and then I scrubbed it to melt. It was quick.

Layla – I broke the chocolate and I couldn’t put it back.

Abhay – We ripped the bread, we couldn’t put it back together.

Angelo – we ripped the bread and put the chocolate on top. It can’t change back.

Senay – you can rip the bread and you can put it back by squishing it. It’s not exactly the same after.

Liya – I broke my chocolate and Naomi was scraping hers.

Shruti – we broke the chocolate into half.

Callie – we also broke the chocolate but we tried to melt it.

McKayla – I melted it. Isla – it can’t go back.

Arnav – we melted it. Braiden – chocolate can go back, you give it enough time in a cold place. It might be in a different shape.

Book Week 2021!

Today we celebrated Book Week 2021 with the theme…

Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds

The children of 1NP and 1HA were all dressed up in their amazing costumes!

You all did a fantastic job of interpreting the theme this year.

Keep reading everyday and enjoy every book you come across – each one has a new adventure waiting for you!

Role Play

Today we had some virtual visitors in our class!

We were very lucky to have 6 different people show us what they do for their job and the Character Strengths they need in order to do this job!

Adriana the Chef showed us how to make gnocchi and used her Character Strength of Team Work to make sure that everyone in the kitchen works together.

Lucy the Paramedic showed us the inside of her ambulance and how she takes someone who isn’t feeling too good to the hospital to feel better. She uses her Character Strength of kindness to look after sick people.

Derek the Pilot showed us all the controls on the inside of his plane and how he flies the plane above the clouds, he uses his Character Strength of bravery to fly very high!

Jasmine the Dental Assistant showed us how to make a clear retainer to keep your teeth straight and used her Character Strength of Appreciation of Beauty to help people feel their most confident.

Olivia the Journalist showed us the different stories she reports on the ABC news and uses her Character Strength of perspective to tell different sides of the same story.

Aisha – I liked the ABC one because it was fun for kids.
Monique – I liked the plane because it was very high and I loved to see the clouds.
Liya – I liked the chef because she was a good cook.
Tri – I liked the ambulance because she showed all the things inside.
Owen – I liked the aeroplane at the end because I could see it was flying.
Angelo – I liked the plane because he showed all the controls!
Senay – I liked the pilot because I liked to see the plane and the clouds up so high.
Catharen – I liked the plane because it can take you somewhere.
Naomi – I liked the dentist because she showed you how to make some teeth.
Williams – I liked the plane one because he showed you where he was going.

We then used these people as our inspiration for our play investigations today!

We are making the rescue place the ambulance takes you to, the hospital.

We are selling things at a shop like the chef.

I’m building the ambulance for Lucy to drive in.

I’m flying the plane too!

Thank you so much to the amazing people from our community who gave us an insight into their occupations and inspired us to find our passion and purpose too!
