Literacy – Advertising
As a warm up, students recapped the purpose or advertising and the key features of effective poster design.

We then watched a short video that explained the basics of graphic design, including layout, composition, negative space, balance, texture and form.

Going deeper task:

Work samples analysing and comparing the features of various advertising posters:

Religion – Mission

Students began to look at what it means to carry out missionary work and how Jesus worked to serve others in his time on Earth.

We read the scripture:
Faith without Works is Dead – James 2:14-17

14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does itprofit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

Students reflected on the meaning and message behind the reading:

“If you have faith in something but don’t work for it, it means nothing.” – David
“When your friends or sisters are hurt, you might say “You’ll be ok” and then do nothing else to help.” – Deepthi

We read Matthew’s scripture:
The Mission of the Twelve 10:5-10

These twelve men were sent out by Jesus with the following instructions: “Do not go to any Gentile territory or any Samaritan towns. Instead, you are to go to the lost sheep of the people of Israel. Go and preach, ‘The Kingdom of heaven is near!’ Heal the sick, bring the dead back to life, heal those who suffer from dreaded skin diseases, and drive out demons. You have received without paying, so give without being paid. Do not carry any gold, silver, or copper money in your pockets; 10 do not carry a beggar’s bag for the trip or an extra shirt or shoes or a walking stick. Workers should be given what they need.

Students discussed what they knew about Jesus’ mission and compared it to the mission of St Vincent de Paul:

Students then researched the following charities, finding their mission statement and aims and recording their key services, using their own words:

– Animal Welfare League
– Backpacks 4 Kids SA
– Anglicare SA
– St John’s Ambulance
– World Families Australia Inc
– Cancer Council SA
– Residential Care Homes
– The Smith Family
