Language of the week: Krio ( Sierra Leone)

This week’s Language of the Week is Krio. Krio is the most widely spoken language in Sierra Leone ( West Africa). It is mainly derived from English but has influences from other African languages.

Shirley ( 1JM) and Anne-Marie’s  (2SB) families speak it at home.  Shirley’s family shared with 1JM a lot of information about Sierra Leone.

Language of the week: Tagalog

Kumusta ka,

This term we are starting with a language spoken by many of our students’ families: Tagalog. Tagalog is spoken as a first language by a quarter of the population of the Philippines and as a second language by the majority.

Students from 2IB and 2TD have prepared an iMovie to be showed at their assembly this Friday.

Hope to see many of you there!

Paalam!

Harmony Day Assembly

On Fri, Week 4, 4RG and students from across the school hosted the assembly. It was a wonderful celebration of our school’s diversity.

There were many cultural dances  performed on the stage to illustrate  just that:

Spanish

Dinka ( South Sudan)

West African

Indian

Cambodian

Vietnamese

Language of the Week: Gujarati

We started off this year with Gujarati, a language spoken in the Indian state of Gujarat as well as in other parts of the world such as Australia, Adelaide and  Holy Family 🙂

Mahi Patel and Aditi Shah are excellent Gujarati speakers. Jineet joined them in the conversation while Om Patel created the iMovie which was presented to the whole school.

Diwali

This week the Indian community is celebrating one of the most import festivals- Diwali, the Festival of Lights.

The children have cooked sweets in Ms Handforth and Ms Sharman’s classes, they drew rangoli and some of them practised for the assembly this Thu at 9am.

We hope you could come.

Moon Lantern Festival

We have finished last term with a great Moon Lantern Festival assembly organised by R/1JM and 5/6PA. The Hall and the stage were beautifully decorated in the traditional red colour as well as the students own lanterns. Children wore red or traditional clothing and everyone looked amazing.

The assembly could not have ended without the dragon dance which always creates a great atmosphere.

The assembly was followed by shared lunch in the double classes.

Already looking forward to the next one.
