Guided Reading Week 4 – Chinese New Year

– The calendar that Chinese people follow is called the lunar calendar which is followed by the moon, different to the ones we have, we follow the days, months and years that go by, they follow the moon. Chinese new year is on the second full moon after the middle of winter and each year it is on a different date, sometimes January or February, the date also is the beginning of the spring harvest, a good time for farmers prepare for the season.

-Some ways to celebrate Chinese new year are to hang up red lanterns and banners and set off fireworks too, it’s because of a old ancient story about a monster called Nian, every year at the end of winter Nian would come out from the mountains and terrorize people until a old man came up with an idea,, the idea was to hang up read bbanners and lantern, then bang drums, set off fire works too, he said it would scare off Nian and it did.
