Teachers spent some time doing 1.1 reading with some children, practising our reading strategies. It was also fantastic to have some parents come in and read with us. Please join us for some reading mon-wed mornings 8.50am-9.15am.

Phonics – letter of the week ‘Tt’

Shared reading – The tiny seed by Eric Carl

We listened to our shared reading text and listened out for the ‘Tt’ sound. We then practised writing this letter/sound with correct formation. We also discussed when we used capital and lower case Tt.

The children then had time to explore this letter/sound through play based experiences. There were a group of boys that used chairs and blocks to create a ‘TRAIN”

Shaving foam to write the letter T, letter formation, playdough, drawing pictures of things starting with T, loose parts to make the letter, chalk boards, whiteboards and more!! Teachers were able to see all children form the letter and say the sound.

Prayer reflection

  • Connor: Jesus was giving bread to everyone
  • Alana: Jesus fed the hungry people
  • Mikayla: there was 5000 people to feed
  • Alexia: there was only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish but lots of people
  • Callie: There were ALOT of people
  • Sahib: the people were with Jesus because they were hungry
  • Monique: Jesus can save people
  • Chloe: Jesus helping people with feeding them the fish

tomorrow we are going to explore patterning more!


What a special time we had together today sharing a lovely lunch in the dining hall. We loved the conversations we were having and getting to know each other. This was a real positive time to build fantastic foundations to our relationships.


Reflection about our dining hall experience:

  • Nikolas – i liked the Jelly and the rice
  • Ziggy – was good
  • Hannah – i like my friends and eat jelly
  • Jason – i thought it was good because we have jelly and sitting at tables
  • Mikayla – there was lots of food and we sat properly
  • Harper – it was nice to have some spring rolls and jelly
  • Sahib – the spring rolls were so yummy
  • Monique – it was awesome to eat lunch and be caring to eat together
  • Elezar – it was good food
  • Connor – we all sat next to each other on big chairs and tables, it was good because i liked the jelly
  • Zachary -i ate lots, jelly…rice…spring rolls
  • Richard – it was really noisy, i liked the food
  • Alexandros – we sat on chair i had thomas plate

Monday Week 4 Term 1 – 17th of February

This is our last week of reading our shared text ‘The Tiny Seed’. Today when I read the story I left out some of the words at end of sentences or within sentences. The children were able to pick up on the words being left out and say them aloud as a group as I read the story. This was amazing to see as we have now read the story 7 times together. Watching the progress over time from the first time we have read it to now when the children are able to follow the story and know what is coming next.

We also read our words for the 3 weeks that align with the story and or are high frequency words. This word list is in the children’s word book in their black bag. Every 3 weeks the children will get a new list of words. It has 10 words in there. Please support your child to read these words at home. There is some space next to the word list where they can have a go at writing these words. Under the word list there is the 3 sounds we have covered over weeks 2-4. They are put in here so you know what sounds we have covered but also so you can engage with these sounds at home.

Writer’s workshop

For writer’s workshop today the children were encouraged to use the word ‘and’ in their writing. Some children wrote their own sentences, some had a go at writing the word and on their page and some children had sentences modelled for them. Within this time we are able to individually focus with each child on where they are at with their writing and support this. When we are focusing on writing in sentences we point out the use of capital and lower case letters and the use of full stops. The children then keep their work in their writer’s workshop folder (which is the folder with the cloud on it).


Today for prayer we sung ‘One Faith, One Hope, One Love’ in preparation for Ash Wednesday next week. The children then shared their own prayers.

Sport and Music 

R/1JM head off to Sport and Music on a Monday and R/1FD stay in the room and then have sport.

Recapping the sound of the Week 

Whilst R/1FD were at sports R/1JM worked on a recap of this weeks sound ‘a’. We looked at the correct letter formation of a capital and lower case letter ‘Aa’ and then drew some things that we know that start with the letter ‘a’ before labelling them.

Keeping Safe Curriculum 

Following on from our trust networks last week this week we talked about who safe people are within our community and how they can help us. We made a list together;

  • Nick- Secruity guard because they have a uniform on
  • Charlee- Police because they help you when you are in trouble
  • Richard- Ambulance will come and help you if you hurt your self

The children then drew a picture of safe people that can help us.

Happy Valentines Day 


Today we enjoyed an assembly by 5/6AE & 5/6HM.

After assembly we read the story ‘Love from the crayons’. The children then had a think about what colour love might be for them.

Today for prayer we read the story ‘I am Love’ – A book of compassion. The is a celebration of love in all its forms, I Am Love asks readers to look inward when they feel afraid. Love allows us to act with compassion and kindness, to live with gratitude, and to take care of ourselves by practicing self-love.

Valentines Provocations 

Today we had some Valentines Provocations for the children to explore. There was a lots of different experiences that aimed to provoke the feeling of love and explore what love means. Here is the children exploring…

Olivers family shared the love by bringing in some fresh peaches from their tree – they were delicious thank you so much!


We ended our week with an afternoon of mindfulness. The children reflected on the week that was and shared what their specks of gold were.

Thursday Week 3 Term 1 – February 13

Today for prayer we read the lovely story ‘Can I pray with my eyes open?’. This story then opened dialogued about what prayer means to us…

What does prayer mean to you? 

Oliver- You are quiet and it looks a bit happy

Alana- You can talk to God when you are sad

Mitchell- You can talk to God

Mikayla- It is quiet time

Alexandros- Quiet time

Alexia- Prayer is a time to be thankful

Charlee- You listen to God and pray

Shane- Prayer means we have to pray to God





Continuing our sun inquiry project. The children’s ideas about the sun were that the sun is hot and it makes things melt. We took this idea and explored melting – we started with ice. Firstly we hypothesised what would happened, then we took some ice outside and watched what happened. After we recorded our observations.

Our thinking…

  • Oliver -” it was like a a square shape, then it was changing in the sun to a triangle…then it kept melting and then it was water”
  • Darnia – melt, hot, sun, water
  • Mikayla – at the start it was really hard, then it was melting and melting but it took a long time to melt
  • Layla – it take 6 minutes. ice melted, its cold the ice it looks like water
  • Edel – it looked like a rectangle. it was hard…then went soft when it melted. the sun melted it
  • Naomi – when it started melting it was changing to a triangle, i think it took 15 minutes to melt…it took a long time for the sun to melt.
  • Angelo painted a picture of the ice melting
  • Hannah – the sun was really hot and it kept melting the ice, the ice melt like water
  • Alana – the ice block was melting from the sun. the ice was really cold like an ice cream, but then the sun changed it into water and it was making things float and not that cold.
  • Richard – my prediction was that it would take 12 minutes to melt. then we timed it and it took 6 minutes for the ice melt. the more it melted the clearer it got, it had tiny droplets of water.
  • Nahom- Our ice was nearly melting and it was going to melt and then we just had to wait 10 minutes and then it was going to melt 
  • Harper- If you put it on the hot ground it will melt quicker and it there is shade on there it won’t melt 
  • Eleazar- The ice got melt 
  • Catharen- The ice was melted 
  • Monique- The ice was melting when the sun make it cool down 
  • JK- The ice melts when the sun shines on it and it turns into water 
  • Mia- When its in the sunshine it melts 
  • Mitchell- The ice melted in the sun because the it was pointing at the sun 
  • Dhyani- The ice melted because the sun melts the ice 
  • Emily- The sun is melting the ice and its too hot 
  • Carter- The ice was melted, it was blue
  • Jason- When we leaved the ice outside it melts because the sun is hot
  • Nelson- The ice melted because its hot
  • Enrique- The ice melted, a few of them melted fast and some melted, it started melting when we first touched them
  • Shane- The ice melted and this is when the ice melted
  • Alexia- The ice melted from the sun because it was so hot they couldn’t even stand and they melted to water
  • Charlee- The ice melted because of the hot sun and because it was hot they couldn’t hold up
  • Callie- The ice melted because the sun melted it
  • Natalie- The ice melted because of the sun because the sun is hot and sun can make it melt

Wednesday Week 3 Term 1 – 12/02/20

This morning we read our Shared Reading text, ‘The Tiny Seed.’ This morning’s focus was on our new sound for this week, ‘a’. We kept an ear and an eye out for this sound while we read our text. Each time the children saw or heard an ‘a’ word they waved their hands in the air.

We engaged in some ‘a’ play, were the children participated in a series of student choice activities related to the ‘a’ sound. These activities included, practicing ‘a’ words on white boards and chalk boards, making ‘a’ words with play dough, finger writing ‘a’ words in lentils, painting ‘a’ words, searching for ‘a’ words in their library readers, and making ‘a’ words using loose parts.

We continued our literacy learning around the letter ‘a’. We focused on the correct letter formation and the children worked in their writing books to practice writing the letter ‘a’ and some ‘a’ beginning sound words.

Wellbeing – Keeping Safe Curriculum


With Valentine’s Day approaching we read a book titled, ‘Love makes a family’, by Sophie Beer.

‘Love is baking a special cake. Love is lending a helping hand. Love is reading one more book. In this exuberant board book, many different families are shown in happy activity, from an early-morning wake-up to a kiss before bed. Whether a child has two moms, two dads, one parent, or one of each, this simple preschool read-aloud demonstrates that what’s most important in each family’s life is the love the family members share.’

We closed our eyes and thought about love, Miss Moore asked, ‘what is love to you?’

Today we read our shared text ‘The Tiny Seed’ again. After reading the story the children engaged in some different literacy learning experiences. These experiences promote different literacy skills including; oral language, reading, writing and fine motor control etc. Today’s experiences were;  lift the flap read and write words, creating this weeks words with lentils (picking up the small lentils is great for fine motor control, find and write words in picture books and creating a flower from the Tiny Seed with play dough. Here is the children engaging with the activities.


In the lead up to Valentine’s Day today we had another love prayer. We reflected through song about Jesus’s love for us.

Image result for play quotesOn Tuesday and Thursday we play between recess and lunch time. Play is a time for the children to use their own agency to guide their learning. The children are able to explore the classroom environment and resources to create meaning through their interests.


The story in library today was ‘The Return of Themla The Unicorn’. Please make sure the children are reading their readers every night at home 🙂

Monday Term 1 Week 3 – 10/02/20

Shared Reading – The Tiny Seed

Today we read our shared reading text, ‘The Tiny Seed’ by Eric Carle and focused on one of our high frequency words, ‘the’. You will see this word in their new Reading Memo books, found in their Library Bags. You will find many useful ways to help your child learn to read and write within this book.

The children practiced reading the word and putting it into sentences during Writer’s Workshop, where they continued their book from last Monday.

Keeping Children Safe Curriculum – My Trust Network

Today we talked about the word trust.

Mrs Feher asked the children,  ‘what does trust mean?’

Viraj – ‘Believe me!’

Shane – ‘we have to believe other people and that is trusting. The teacher can trust you to go somewhere by yourself.’

Alana – ‘when you trust people.’

Mrs Feher then asked the children , ‘who do you trust?’

Shane – ‘We trust Jesus.’

Viraj – ‘I trust mum and dad because they never lie.’

Alana – ‘I trust my cousin.’

Nikolas – ‘Nan and Pop because we love them and they love us.’

Layla – ‘I trust my dad.’

Mikayla – ‘I trust my grandma because she takes good care of me.’

Richard – ‘I trust God. He is the one who made everything.’

Edel – ‘I trust my mum because she is doing good things.’

After we traced around our hands and thought of one safe person who we trust in our lives for each finger on our hand.

Our math focus at the moment is;

We have started our exploration on days of the week. Today we focused on reading and recognising days of the week in order from Sunday to Saturday.

Investigative play

Inquiry project

“We are all researchers”

Children will be involved in an inquiry project with a beginning provocation inspired by the sun. Teachers will work alongside the children on their collaborative project.
