Tuesday Week 10 Term 1 – March 31

Tuesday Week 10 Term 1 – March 31

Hello Families,

I hope that everyone is keeping safe and keeping healthy. Remember that the government guidelines are to stay at home unless you are travelling to school or work, to get essentials from the supermarket or chemist and to exercise. It is in everyone’s interest to follow these guidelines to ensure we can slow and stop the spread. At school we will continue to clean throughout the day as well as practice safe hygiene (washing hands any time we enter the room) and educating the children about social distancing.

If you would like to drop your children at the door in the morning we will help them to unpack their bag and get sorted for their day. We pray as a community that everyone keeps healthy and safe and that all our essential workers at this time are supported and cared for.

If anyone needs support please have a look at this page for links to different ways to support your self at this time.

  • Read the story – The Easter Story (provided in email)
  • Create a mini book of the story
  • Create a poster advertising the story
  • Act out the story (involve siblings or toys as different characters)

Prayer

Holy Week

Our focus for prayer today was Maundy (Holy) Thursday or the Last Supper. We used the power point to go through what Maundy Thursday is and watched the video below.

We then let the children reflect on what they know about the Last Supper.

  • Alexandros – Judas is going to betray Jesus
  • Viraj- Judas is going to tell the bad people, the wine and the bread remember Jesus before he went on the cross
  • Shylah- They had bread to the disciples and its for Jesus body and the wine was for the blood
  • Monqiue- He was giving the bread to people and then he gave it away to people to share and he would never be mean and he would be nice to everybody

Mini Math

Hungry Caterpillar Addition

Today we used our number skills to start some simple addition. We used unisex cubes to count and add on. As a group we put the addition sums on the board and worked through them together.

Investigations

Play is Practice Wall Quotes™ Decal | WallQuotes.com

Today the children enjoyed using the home corner and dress up materials, the lego, painting and paper craft to explore their thinking and make meaning.

Mindfulness

Take 5 minutes to sit quietly and concentrate on your breathing, lay flat in a comfortable, quiet place and relax every part of your body. Start at your toes and work all the way up to your head.

Library

This week the story we read in library was ‘Australians all love Easter eggs’. The story explored Easter Bunny’s journey to get to Bunyip Creek and the troubles he had along the way to get there.

R1JM Single Lesson

This afternoon we continued our learning about the letter Gg. We went through what sound the letter makes and then how we write both the capital and lower case letter Gg. We used our ‘Get Squiggling’ video to go through the correct letter formation and then draw and write things that start with the letter Gg.

We ended our lesson with some music and movement.

Monday Term 1 Week 10 – 30/3/20

Literacy

Today we read our shared reading text, The Easter Story. We focussed on the beginning of the story which talks about Palm Sunday.

Children's Easter Story Book | Unique Kids Easter Gifts ...

After we chose a sentence related to the story and practiced writing it, paying particular attention to spelling our key words correctly – Jesus, Jerusalem, Donkey, Palm, Cross, God, and Mary.

Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.

The donkey walked over the palm leaves.

Jesus died on the cross.

God sent an angel to talk to Mary.

Prayer

Holy Week is next week. This week we will focus on each day of Holy Week during prayer. Today we focused on the first day of Holy Week, Palm Sunday. This is what is classed as the first day of the Easter Story. Palm Sunday is the day Jesus enters Jerusalem on his donkey. He is praised and welcomed by the people who placed palm leaves onto the ground for the donkey to walk over. We started prayer reading the prayer below, together as a group. After we watched a short clip which explains the Easter Sunday part of the Easter story.

After Mikayla  and Alex Shared a reflection, followed by a prayer of their own…

Reflection:

Mikayla – ‘Jesus rode the donkey over the palm leaves.’

Alexandros – ‘Jesus riding on the donkey and walking on the palm leave.’

Prayer:

Alexandros  – ‘Dear God, Jesus was riding on the donkey. Thank you for the people.’

Mikayla ‘Dear God, Thank you for the houses and the people and the friends and the teachers. Amen.’

Mini Maths

Today we watched a snail eat berries and count the berries as he ate them. While the snail was doing this we paused the screen on each number while the children recorded the number on their white board and drew the correct number of berries to match. Some children challenged themselves further and wrote the number words too.

Single Lesson with R1FD

Today Mikayla, Alexandros and Angelo tuned into ‘HooplaKidz Doodle’ and ‘Art Hub’ to watch drawing tutorials and learn to draw. Mikayla chose to draw a pizza and Alexandros chose to draw a caterpillar. These two YouTube Channels are fantastic and lots of fun. They would be very useful at home lessons for children while they are learning at home.

Keeping Safe – Child Protection Curriculum

Today we talked about what it feels like to be safe and what it feels like to be unsafe. We watched the two clips, pausing and discussing how the characters might have been feeling at certain times.  We then recorded our thoughts and reflection together as a group and then in our Learning Journal.

Movement

Literacy

Image result for the easter story book

Today we read the Easter Story for a third time. The children have come to understand the story much clearer now and have been able to offer their reflections on the story as we read.

After, we recapped on our learning on the  ‘Mm’ letter and sound and introduced a new letter and sound, ‘Oo’…

We then engaged in a variety of different activities which offered an opportunity to practice using and writing the ‘m’ and ‘o’ sound. We made the letters using Lego and play dough, we painted the letters and illustrations of different items beginning with the sounds, we searched for the ‘m’ and ‘o’ sounds in a selection of books, we practiced tracing the letters to learn how to form them and we searched the room for objects beginning with the ‘m’ and ‘0’ sound.

Have a look at our learning…

Catholic Identity – Prayer

Today we reread the first couple of pages of our Shared Reading text, The Easter Story. In the first part of the story Jesus arrives in Jerusalem on a donkey. He is greeted with cheer, joy and happiness as the people celebrate his arrival. The people hold palm leaves, wave them around and lay them on the floor for the donkey to walk across.

We talk about the adoration, praise and joy the people feel for Jesus and his arrival. We then listened to this very special song, ‘Hosanna’, which is a biblical word meaning adoration, praise and joy.

Mikayla – people are waving leavres. they are happy.

viraj – ‘they are waving the leaves because they love Jesus.’

Monique ‘they waves the leaves because Jesus is walking in on the horse.’

Natalie ‘he walks in on the donkey.’

Oliver ‘everybody likes him.’

Alexandros ‘jujus rides in on the donkey and the people are happy,’

Natalie ‘they are putting the leaves on the ground for the donkey to walk on.’

Children are then invited to share a prayer with the group…

Oliver – ‘dear good, I thank you for the people, the Jesus and the world.’

Shylah ‘ thank yo for the work you did on the sign and thank you for all of the things and housework and students and my dog.’

Alexandros ‘dear god, thank you for the people and thank you for the car.’

Viraj – ‘ dear god, thank you for the people and the houses and for money and for my friend Connor and the teachers and Holy Family Catholic School.’

Monique – ‘thank you for the people and thank you for all of the parents. thank you for Jesus and my friends.’

MATHS

Numbers, Numbers, Numbers!

Our focus today in Maths is using 10 Frames. We can use them for composing and decomposing numbers in relation to 5 and 10. They help form the basis for understanding place value in the future. The children were each given a 10 frame and 10 flip tiles to explore number with. They recorded how many of each colour they got.

Have a nice night 🙂
