Our shared text today was ‘I like myself’ by author, Karen Beaumont, and illustrator, David Catrow.
High on energy and imagination, this ode to self-esteem encourages kids to appreciate everything about themselves–inside and out. Messy hair? Beaver breath? So what Here’s a little girl who knows what really matters. At once silly and serious, Karen Beaumont’s joyous rhyming text and David Catrow’s wild illustrations unite in a book that is sassy, soulful–and straight from the heart.
There was a lot to talk about in the illustrations:

- “The cat looks grumpy.”

- “I can see bones and skulls.”

- “Her lamp stand is a foot.”

- “She has a fan and an umbrella to keep her cool.”
Mrs Handforth asked the children, ‘What do you like about yourself?’ Some children were able to share their thoughts with the whole group:
LITERACY ACTIVITIES
Today’s activities included: letter-sound bingo (s, a, t, p, i, n) with an adult, writing our names on whiteboards, making our names with play dough and writing sentences to match pictures. The students working on the sentences sat with Mrs Handforth on the carpet, engaging in some shared writing exemplars before going off to try and write their own sentences independently. They had to remember to start their sentence with a capital letter and end it with a full stop. They were also encouraged to segment the sounds they could hear in words to try and spell them independently . For example: web = w-e-b.
NUMERACY
Mrs Papillo began today’s sorting lesson by asking the children to get into groups based on different features: eye colour, hair colour, boys and girls, shorts and dresses. After this the children helped her to sort animals into groups using ActivInspire.
The children then moved around the room sorting collections of items. They were free to decide on the criteria for sorting, such asa colour, shape, numbers, letters and so on. Here they are busily sorting:

- Williams sorted the plastic bears into two sets: a ‘rough’ set and a ‘smooth’ set.

- Riaan sorted bottle tops into sets of different colours.

- Harjas carefully sorted the cotton reels into a line of gold and a line of blue.

- Isabella worked with Ariana and sorted multilink cubes by colour.
-
- Micky sorted the plastic shapes by colour.
-
- Armin used the magnetic tiles and made a pile of blue ones and a pile of purple ones.

- Sam sorted cotton reels by colour. He balanced them on top of each other carefully.

- Agamjot sorted the circles into different colour groups.

- Mikayla was very creative: she sorted into three groups – lower case letters, upper case letters and numbers.

- Tri sorted the playing cards by finding all the ones with number three on them.

- Madeline sorted the plastic bears by colour.

- Scarlett sorted playing cards into a red pile and a black pile.

- Aisha carefully placed plastic elephants inside her sorting circle and placed plastic bears all around the edge of the circle.

- Yasha sorted the plastic shapes by colour.

- Anthony sorted shapes by colour.

- Lowell sorted bottle tops by colour.

- Vincent sorted with cards – red and black.

- Aleer sorted multilink cubes by white and black. He also sorted triangles and squares.

- Abel sorted the shapes by colour.

- Victoria sorted the cubes by colour.

- Vonn sorted the shapes.

- Eeerat used colour to sort her objects.

- Priya sorted the multilink cubes into colours.

- Braiden sorted the bottle tops by colour.

- Deanna sorted using colour.

- Arielle also used colour to sort.

- Lina made towers of cubes, sorting by colour.

- Ambrose sorted by colour too.

- Isla sorted the playing cards into black and red cards.

- Ayan sorted bottle tops using colour also.

- Ariana worked with Isabella and sorted the multilink cubes into VERY long towers based on their colour.
During Play Investigations, we continued to listen to children read, completing some formal reading assessments. Corinne, our volunteer visitor, also heard several children read 1:1 today.
