Tuesday (Term 1: Week 5)

Happy Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) everyone!

Welcome to a lovely, summery Tuesday in Rooms 7 and 8.

SHARED READING

We revisited the story of TIDDALICK today. We read the original text that we shared yesterday. Then we viewed an animation of the story narrated by an Aboriginal man. We compared the text-story and the visual-story.

THINGS THAT WERE THE SAME AND THINGS THAT WERE DIFFERENT

LITERACY ACTIVITIES

Today’s literacy activities included artistic ways of responding to the text, as well as practising letter names and sounds, plus developing oral literacy through retelling a familiar story with the aid of puppets. Different children read with their teachers today in a guided reading session.

DOT PAINTING

This two-stage activity involved using cotton buds to apply paint in dots onto the template of a frog. Then, whilst the frogs were drying, students proceeded to create a watercolour billabong background for the frog to inhabit. This group worked completely independently today, with just an exemplar as a guide. Mrs Papillo and Mrs Handforth were very impressed with their

R/1JH GUIDED READING
Tri, Williams and Sam read ‘Silly Cat’ with Mrs Handforth. The boys were amazing at spotting high frequency words in the text, and they also tried really hard to decode all the unfamiliar words using semantic and phono-graphic strategies.

Mrs Papillo shared a text called ‘Hide and Seek’ with her guided reading group.

LETTERS & SOUNDS
These children worked in a group with Miss Jade to identify pictures in magazines that began with (or contained) the sounds: /s/, /a/, /t/ and /p/. They cut out these pictures and stuck them onto the correct poster paper marked with the letter that represented the sound.

PUPPET RETELLING
After creating their puppet shows and performing to each other, the puppeteers drew some of the characters from the story.

SHROVE TUESDAY
Today the children decorated a cross to hang on our Lenten Promise Tree. We decided to focus on being kind to ourselves and others. Most children wrote the word ‘kind’ or ‘be kind’ and some even wrote a phrase such as ‘I promise to be kind.’ We then enjoyed some tasty pancakes with or without jam.

PLAY INVESTIGATIONS

The children had play for 30 minutes today, after finishing their pancakes.

Vincent and Abhay teamed up to make a treasure box with the magnetic tiles and inside they stored lots of sparkly gems.

SPANISH

Mrs Nunez sent us through some pictures and a video of the children in Spanish.

Here are R/1MP singing in Spanish: ‘Hello. How are you?’ (Hola. Como estas?’)

MUSIC

This afternoon both classes enjoyed separate music lessons with Mrs Crisp, who kindly took some photographs for us

See you tomorrow and please remember it is LIBRARY DAY, so your child will need to bring their reading books to school in order to exchange them for new readers.

NOTE: If you wish to change your child’s library books before the weekly library visit, you can attend the library with your child from 8:30 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. or from 3:00 p.m.  to 3:30 p.m. Our friendly librarians will be happy to help.
