Wednesday (Term 2 | Week 3)

A warm welcome to Wednesday!

Here’s our learning for today:

When we visited our May calendar, we saw it was Riaan’s birthday. We sang Happy Birthday to him.

LIBRARY

Today’s shared text was The Very Hungry Worry Monsters.

Have you heard of the worry monsters? They eat your worries and make them disappear! Children will love this funny story featuring the friendly worry monsters, designed to help children talk about their fears. Lara Ede’s bright, friendly illustrations will engage them as they read.

LETTERS AND SOUNDS

Group 1 were investigating the letter h and the phoneme /h/.

We also practised reading these ‘tricky’ high frequency words as quickly and accurately as we could:

The children’s independent activity today was to match the words on doors to pictures showing the meaning of the word. For example:

The children practised and were encouraged to sound out the individual sounds in the word and then blend them together in order to read the word. They then practised writing the word too.

Meanwhile Group 2 were exploring the digraph ‘ch’.

The children began by participating in an interactive presentation. After this they played a circle game whereby they had to swap seats with another student if the teacher said a word with the sound ‘ch’ in it. Everyone enjoyed this game.

After this they engaged in an independent activity where they had a piggy bank which they had to fill with paper coins – all paper coins with the  sound ‘ch’ in the word represented by the picture went into the piggy bank. All the words with no ‘ch’ sound in them went around the edge of the piggy. As a challenge, the children were asked to find more ‘ch’ words – it was great to see our students using dictionaries independently to do this.

PLAY INVESTIGATIONS

Abhay and Kevin made this amazing wooden sculpture which housed several cars. I think the people must have hidden their cars inside because the T-Rexes were attacking! What do you think?

Vincent is very artistic and loves to sketch and draw. Today he was proud to show me his winged dragon. It’s a magnificent picture and a magnificent beast!

Mikayla and Isabella are also great artists too. Today they drew branches of trees, adding leaves. Mikayla got round to colouring some of her leaves in autumnal colours too – reds, oranges, yellows, browns, golds and bronzes.

After lunch, Liam, Ebony, Williams and Mrs Handforth picked some oranges from the orange grove to share with the class. We had to look carefully for the oranges that were ripe (all orange in colour) and then we cut them in half, before slicing each half into threes. How many pieces did we cut each orange into? I wonder if you can work it out?

Lots of children enjoyed a slice of juicy orange – packed full of vitamin C!

LITERACY/ART

Today the children were invited to make a paper plate mask or paper bag puppet representing a character from this week’s shared text, A Squash and a Squeeze. The Year 1 students had learned about characters on Monday and were keen to list the six characters in the story: the little old lady, the wise old man, the cow, the pig, the goat and the hen.

We got busy colouring, cutting, sticking and gluing … some of the characters are still ‘in the making’ although some children did manage to finish. Time will be allocated tomorrow to finish and then act out the story.

Remember Mrs Cooymans is looking forward to teaching your sport tomorrow, so wear your sports uniform and trainers to school!
