Wednesday (T2|W10)

Welcome to wonderful Wednesday!

Today is Isla’s sixth birthday, so we had a sing song and gave her six big claps and three loud cheers. We hope you have a wonderful day, Isla.

CONGRATULATIONS …

to Vonn for achieving his 75 books read at home award! Keep up the practise, everyone! Reading is a key life skill.

LETTERS AND SOUNDS

Today Group 1 were learning about the letter x which makes a /ks/ sound (note: it very occasionally can also make a /z/ sound e.g.  like at the start of xylophone). As always, the children participate in an interactive lesson with activities including writing, reading, singing and making actions. We always revise previously learned sounds and actions before moving on the new sound. The children also practise a set of regular high frequency (sight) words.

We also sing the following alphabet song, which is to the tune of the traditional alphabet song, but with different lyrics … perhaps you could have a  go at learning the song with your child, or ask them to teach it to you!

Today Group 2 began learning about the letters that make up a set of ‘long vowel phonemes’. First up was the letter combination ai , which makes the sound /ay/. Here’s the sound the two letters ai make:

NUMERACY

Today the children were encouraged to use mathematics resources in class to revisit and consolidate an aspect of learning – there were number, shape and pattern provocations to explore.

SCIENCE: HABITATS

Today we focused on the Daintree Tropical Rainforest, Australia’s biggest, and the world’s oldest, rainforest. We watched a short nature documentary that showed us some of the animals and plants that exist in this impressive habitat. The students were very interested in the sounds they could hear in the background too: the calls of birds; the whirring and buzzing of insects, and the sound of rivers, waterfalls and rain.

We then had a go at following visual instructions to draw a cassowary and a parrot. The cassowary had to be coloured exactly like the photograph, but the children viewed lots of different sorts of parrots and were free to choose colours for these birds.

Sport tomorrow so please remember to wear your SPORT UNIFORM.
