Berry Street Education Model

During 2016-2017, educators at Holy Family engaged with 5 days engaging professional development focusing on theBerry Street Education Model.

This model continues to influence our pedagogy here at Holy Family.

“The Berry Street Education Model provides schools with the training, curriculum and strategies to engage even the most challenging students. This education initiative is different because it is based on proven positive education, trauma-informed and wellbeing practices that enable students’ academic and personal growth. The model is unique because it educates schools and their leaders to reinforce and sustain cognitive and behavioural change, thereby re-engaging young people in learning and progressing their academic achievement.” (Berry Street Childhood Institute)

Listen to Tom Brunzell, a founding member of the model, explain what it covers:

The five domains of BSEM

The five domains of the Berry Street Educational Model correspond with the child development capacities that each student must build in order to be ‘ready to learn’. We focus first on building the capacity to engage and then nurturing their willingness engage.

Body: Building students’ capacity by increasing physical regulation of the stress response, de-escalation and focus.

Character: Harnessing a values and character strengths approach to install students’ self-knowledge for future pathways.

Engagement: Motivating students with strategies that in ease their willingness to learn.

Stamina: Creating a culture of academic persistence by nurturing resilience, emotional intelligence a d a growth mindset.

Relationship: Nurturing on-task learning through relational classroom management strategies.
