Feliz Dia de las Madres (Mother’s Day)

Mother’s Day is a day that is celebrated around the world. Each country has a unique date for their holiday and sometimes a unique meaning. For example, in Mexico it is celebrated on May 10th. In Spain, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of May.

In most countries, the common theme is to celebrate the contributions mothers make to the family and to the world.

In Spain, Mother’s Day is a day that children truly look forward to. They enjoy showing their mothers how much they mean to them by making crafts such as cards, writing poems and celebrating Mother’s Day with their mum and family.

Students had an opportunity to examine the way Mother’s Day is celebrated in Spain. They were introduced to the traditions and significance that “El Dia de las Madres” plays in Spanish culture.

Vamos a Cantar – Let’s Sing

Señora Nuñez has been teaching 3/4DP a “Cancion de Saludos” a greeting song that highlights the different types of greetings that are used during a day. We had lots of fun learning and singing the song!

Please enjoy 3/4DP as they sing in Spanish.

Year 5/6 Investigations Descriptions – Focus on Self

The Year 5/6’s are investigating how to describe themselves in Spanish. They are formulating detailed descriptive sentences about themselves. They could use any format or structure they wanted to develop their text. I encouraged students to be as creative as they wanted in their language choices. It was wonderful to see the amazing language range that the students developed.

Here are some examples of the positive descriptive words they have used.

La Comida (Food)

One of my favourite units as a Spanish teacher has always been La Comida!  This semester students have been able to enjoy learning all about comidas (food).

During this activity the students from 3/4MN and 3/4CP created comidas (food) using play dough and presented them to me in Spanish. The children were very creative in their designs and had lots of fun! Here are some examples of the fantastic work the students did.

The Year 3/4’s have also had the opportunity to create their favourite meal, Mi Comida Favorita. They were very imaginative in presenting their designs on paper plates to share with their partners.

Here are some examples of their great work!

Year 3/4

Students in Year 3 to 4 are involved in twice weekly Spanish lessons. They are developing their skills in communicating in Spanish through listening, speaking, reading and writing. They are focusing on greetings, numbers (0-20), colours, the days of the week, the months of the year and how to make simple requests and responses to Spanish Classroom Phrases. We have played interactive oral language games such as Loteria and Adivina.
