Term 1, Week 6

Welcome to Week 6!

This week in Literacy, we are reviewing all of our previously learnt letter names and sounds, blending and segmenting sounds together with form words and using these words to make up ‘Super Sentences’. In Bookmaking, we are continuing our work on writing a Narrative; thinking about our characters and events and the problem/s that the characters are going to face. We have used the stories ‘The Little Brown Duck’ and ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ to helps us understand the Narrative process.

Morning Reading

Each morning we have been continuing independent reading. This is a time where students read their own borrowed library books independently at their tables. Thank you to the children who have been bringing their library bags and books each day!

In Numeracy,

In Religion, the children finished off their Creation storybooks. We also celebrated Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. Shrove Tuesday is celebrated on the Tuesday before Lent begins. Lent is a time when Christians are getting ready for Easter. Lent is 40 days long because this is how long Jesus spent in the desert to be with God. During this time he had no food and nothing to drink. He was also tempted by Satan. Christians use Lent as a time to think about Jesus and often give up things. It might be chocolate or something like video games. They do this to see if they can resist being tempted, like Jesus did in the desert. On Ash Wednesday, Christians go to a special service to repent. This means they go to Church to admit things they have done wrong and to ask God for forgiveness. During the special service, a special cross is drawn on their head using ashes. Christians believe that the ashes are a symbol of being sorry for things they have done wrong. They also believe that having a cross drawn on their head with ash, shows their commitment to God and Jesus Christ.

In Science, we discussed the many different cloud types and then went outside to notice and draw these, labelling them with their correct name.

Term 1, Week 5

It’s hard to believe that we are in Week 5! The children have settled well into daily routines and structures and are fully immersed in their learning.

In English, we looked at the digraph ‘ng’ as in swing, made up sentences, read passages and revised our previously learnt digraphs and tricky words. In Bookmaking, the children are constructing their own narratives and thinking about their characters, the setting and how to begin their stories.

In Numeracy,

In Religion, we explored how God created all living things. After viewing the ‘Creation Scripture Genesis 1:1-2’, the children created their own Creation booklets; breaking down each day and what was created on that day.

In Technology, we explored how plants and animals are grown for food, for example, chickens lay eggs, cows make milk, potatoes are grown in the ground etc.

Term 1, Week 4

Welcome to another fantastic week of learning!

In English, we have been exploring some new digraphs ‘ch’ (chick), ‘th’ (thumb, feather) and oo (moon). Our new tricky words learnt this week include; then, there, they. The children also worked in different small groups  on practising their blending and segmenting of words with these leant digraphs, Word Book Work (reading words and sentences), handwriting and writing sentences.

Thank you to families who have been listening to their children read every night and assisting them with their home learning tasks. This work completed at home will assist the children consolidate their classroom learning.

In Numeracy, the students continued explore their number formation and representation. This week we focused on the numbers 9 and 10. The students also explored how to count like a mathematician as they ordered numbers from 0-20.

In Religion, we explored ‘God’ and spoke about many things that God is, for example, Eternal, Healer, Love, Holy, Kind, Creator and forgiving. The children then drew what this looked like.

In Health, we explored the difference between bucket filling and bucket dipping. We explored ways we can fill someone’s bucket ie. helping others, packing up after ourselves and being respectful versus dipping into someone’s bucket ie. hurting others, disrespecting our environments etc.

In Technology, we looked at how food can be selected and prepared for heathy eating. We explored the food pyramid and put correct foods into their correct segments.

In HASS, we listened to the story Frank turns Four and connected it with the timelines of our own lives. The students created their very own timeline, drawing 1 picture for each age they have turned from one to seven.

In Technologies, we explored ‘healthy eating’. The students were asked to consider everyday foods and sometimes foods and how they support our bodies.

Term 1, Week 2

Welcome to Week 2. The children have settled in well and are learning about the daily routines and structures.

Just a reminder that we are an Egg and Nut Free Zone at Holy Family. We have a few students in our classes this year with severe allergies to these two ingredients so it is imperative that students are not bringing them too school.

In Literacy, we have started our InitalLit literacy program which is a research-based initiative which teaches children how to read and spell through daily lessons. We have provided a Parent Information sheet for your reading.

Here are some photos of the children immersing themselves in their literacy learning.

We have been beginning our morning with independent reading. Students have the opportunity to practice reading leveled readers or exploring picture books.

In Numeracy, we have been exploring number with a focus on counting, writing and subitising.

This week’s assembly celebrated Lunar New Year.
