Auskick | Week 2, Term 3

Term 2, Week 9

Hello Week 9! We have had another busy and fun week full of learning in our classroom.

Congratulations to Dominic for showcasing his piano skills at the Assembly Friday.

Congratulations to Mohith for reading 75 nights!

Congratulations to Tanmay for reading 100 nights!

In Maths, we continued looking at the operation Subtraction. This week we had a go at using number lines, concrete materials, drawing dots and counting backwards on our fingers to help solve a range of sums. We also had a go at solving worded problems.

In literacy, we have explored the many letter combinations that make the sound long vowel /i/.

In health, we looked at the meaning of the words ‘unfair’ and ‘fair’. We read a story about a boy making fair and unfair choices and discussed with our peers things that we thought were fair and unfair. We each chose 1 of our ideas and drew them in our book with a matching sentence.

In Science, we continued exploring the needs and wants of living things. We had a look at an astronaut going to the moon and brainstormed what we think we would need to take. Here is what we came up with.

Term 2, Week 8

Wow! We can’t believe that we only have 2 weeks left of term 2! We have had a busy week beginning new topics and continuing on with others.

A reminder that the children should be bringing their library bags and books to school each day. This ensures that they always have books at their appropriate level to read independently, with a teacher or with support staff in the room and allows the teachers a chance to test sight words.

This week we have…

Explored the operation of ‘subtraction’ in Maths. We learnt a few strategies like counting using fingers, counting backwards, counting on ten frames and crossing out objects to help us solve a range of problems using numbers 0-20.

Investigated how ‘Jez’ adds onomatopoeia and big and bold into his writing.

Animal Onomatopoeia Games

Explored the graphemes that make the long /e/ sound. We had a go at writing words and sentences that included the ‘ee’, ‘ea’, ‘ey’ and ‘y’ all making the long vowel e sound.

Explored the commonly used sight word ‘are’. The students practiced tap-spelling, writing and identifying the word in sentences.

Explored the differences between ‘needs’ and ‘wants’. The students reflected on the things animals and plants need to survive. As a class we sorted a range of images into whether they were a need or a want and the students drew their own examples in their books.

Explored organic and geometrical shapes. We created our own shape pictures, depicting an underwear scene using a variety of the shapes we have learnt this term.

In Technology, we explored Bird’s Eye View. The students had to think about what a snowman would look like from a bird’s eye view and create it using oil pastels and a rubbing technique. Have a look at our finished products!

Have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you Monday ready for more learning!

Assembly

Well done to all students in 1EJ and 1KS for their hard work and dedication at our Assembly. The students worked hard all week practicing and preparing to be on stage. They all showed great bravery, persistence and teamwork and we are very proud of them all!

A big thank you also, to the families and friends that attended the assembly today. We hope you enjoyed the show!

Here are some of the videos that were played at our Assembly.

Term 2, Week 4

Welcome to another week in 1EJ and 1KS. Just a reminder that our classes will be hosting an Assembly in Week 6 on Friday the 7th of June at 9am in the Hall. All families are invited to attend.

In Literacy, we have been exploring the digraph sound ‘sh’ and the sight word ‘was’. We also continued with our Kung Fu Punctuation where we introduced ellipses and commas.

In Numeracy, we continued learning and revising our number facts to 10 and delved deeper into the operation addition.

In Science, we started an inquiry about shadows and the sun. This was done through investigated where we see shadows and what we thought had made them.

In Health, we looked at the rights and responsibilities of children and adults through watching a story called ‘Willy and Hugh’.

In Technologies, we created our very own character masks that matched our design process from the week before.

In Art, we have been looking at how lines can create images where we created crazy hair for ourselves.

On Wednesday, we celebrated National Simultaneous Storytime Day! This year we listened to the story ‘Bowerbird Blues’ written by Aura Parker. The story was about longing connection, which unravels as the Bowerbird takes flight across sea, sky and city. This day encourages more young Australians to read and enjoy books as it asks all students across all schools to stop at 12:00pm and listen to the story being read.

In Religion, we learnt about the Pentecost and further explored the Holy Spirit.

Have a safe and happy weekend! A reminder to bring library bags each day.

See you all next week, for week 5!!!

Term 2, Week 3

Hello families and welcome to what week 3 looked like in our classroom! We ask that the children practise these songs at home in preparation for our assembly.

In Word Study this week, we introduced a new digraph sound to the children. We explored that when the letter W and the letter H team up together to make one sound they make the sound ‘wh’ as in whale. We engaged in handwriting activities, found the sound in picture books, creating sentences using ‘wh’ word and played in and out sound games. Have a look at our work.

Congratulations to Shayan and Zayin for reading 25 nights!

Congratulations to Marley and Audrey for reading 50 nights!

In Religion, we have been learning all about Mary! The students were asked to draw anything they know about Mary and have a go at writing a sentence to match. Some of the drawings that we saw were ‘Gabriel telling Mary she was pregnant, Mary having baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Mary and God and Baby Jesus in Bethlehem with Mary.

In Maths, we began a new topic all about Rainbow facts to 10! These facts are 2 numbers that when added together equal the number 10. All week the students engaged in a range of activities to practise their knowledge of these number facts. Have a look at our work!

In Technologies, we continued working on our design skills! This week we designed our very own character mask. The students were able to choose which character they wanted to make, draw their mask and have a go at labeling the materials they will need.

Art

In art we have started to investigate how lines can affect our drawings. Check out some of the ways we used lines.

Congratulations to Dominic for reading 75 nights!

Congratulations to Mohith for reading 25 nights!

In Word Study this week, we learnt the digraph sound ‘th’. We had a go writing the sound, sounding out words that contain the ‘soft th’ and the ‘hard th’ and then put them into sentences. Over the week the students were then asked to find words that contain the ‘th’ sound in picture books as well as write these word in rainbow, pyramid and sentence writing.

In Writers Workshop, we began looking at KUNG FU PUNCTUATION! This is to help us remember to punctuate our work when writing. You may like to try it at home 🙂

In Maths, we have continued our work on PATTERNS. We have created AB, AAB, ABB and ABC using objects, colours, numbers and shapes.

In Technologies, we used our designs from last week to create and make our EMOJI MASKS! The students were very creative and enjoyed creating and sharing their masks with their peers.

DIY Emoji Masks

In Religion, the children explored The Visitation (Luke 1:39-56). Have a look at our work retelling the story through illustrations.

In Science, we discussed the 4 seasons being Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring. The students shared things they already knew about each season and were asked to draw a picture of what each season looks and feels like. We then also explored which months of the year happen in each season.
