Week 5

Welcome to week 5!

In Maths this week we have continued exploring teen numbers and place value. We have been practicing building a group of ten and counting how many more blocks we need to represent the ones.

In Word Study this week we have been focusing on the sounds ‘h, r and m’. Have a look at the improvement in our handwriting already!

In Writers Workshop we have been creating some amazing narrative stories. The children had a go at creating a character, choosing a setting and making sure their story had a beginning, middle and end.

Have a look at our front covers! In Year 1, we know that a front cover must have a title, a coloured picture and the authors name.

HASS

In HASS we have been looking at families and how all our families are unique to me.

Week 4

Here’s a look at what week 4 looked like in 1EJ and 1KS. We have had a very busy week full of learning, exploring and fun!

In Religion, we had a think about what God looks like to us. We had a go at drawing God and recorded words around that remind us of him. Some common responses were ‘God is love, creator, protector and kind’. Have a look at our finished work.

Continuing on with Word Study this week we explored the letters ‘c, k and e’.  We are getting better at hearing the sound of the day in words and have even been trying to find it in our readers. Have a look at the sentences we created in our books.

In technologies we learnt about the different food groups. We had a go labeling and colouring the different foods found in each food group.

In History, we have been exploring time lines. This week we had a go at ordering different events in our calendar year.

T1, W3

What another wonderful week of learning and playing together! We are beginning to work so well together as a team and the children have been enjoying getting to learn and play with new children as well as reconnect with their friends from Reception.

In Word Study this week we explored the sounds ‘p, i and n’. Below are some of our jolly phonics songs and actions if the children want to keep practicing at home.

In Writers Workshop we have been looking at how to create exciting and unique characters. We used Story Maths to help us think of a new character for our books. Story Maths is where you  add one idea to another to create an amazing idea.
For example: I could add a dog in the first box. Then add a wizard to another box to make a ‘Wizard Dog’. Have a look at some of the clever creations the students came up with. We had things like ‘super pizza, dinosaur dogs and a spongebob sonic’.

In Maths this week we have continued learning all about number! We practiced using the correct formation to write the numbers ‘5, 6, 7, 8 and 9’. As well as practiced forwards and backwards counting, using number lines and writing the number that comes before and after single digit numbers. Have a look at us hard at work!

On Tuesday we celebrated Shrove Tuesday.

In Word Study this week we investigated and had a go at writing the sight word the. This is a very common sight word in the children’s readers and is a popular choice of word when beginning to write sentences. Have a look at the great writing we have been doing!

Term 1 , Week 2

A warm welcome to week 2 and what a busy week it was! This week we have been busy doing lots of learning and celebrating Vietnamese New Year.

Reading at home

This week we sent home with the children a ‘home reading diary’. This book is to encourage students to read their readers each night with an adult or older sibling. After the students finish reading a book they can record the title of the book, a comment about the story and draw a face to show whether they enjoyed the book or not. As the students continue to fill in their reading diary there are milestones to hit where they receive a certificate and a sticker. When they reach one of these milestones please ask the children to bring their books to one of the teachers so that we can sign it off and take their photo.
You may also notice that your child’s reading level has changed slightly since the end of last year. This is completely normal after the 6 week holiday break and the children will start to move up again after continued reading at school and at home.

Brainfood

Just a friendly reminder that students need to bring something for brainfood each day. This is an additional snack to their recess and lunch. Brainfood can be a piece of fruit, a vegetable, yoghurt or cheese. Brainfood is an important time for the students to have a small break and give their brain and bodies energy for more learning.

As part of Word Study we have also been investigating sight words. Sight words are words that you can not sound out and that you must learn by sight. Have a look at us working hard on the sight words ‘a, i and the’.

HASS

In HASS we have been exploring the past. We started our topic by investigating lots of images of things that were used in the past. After investigation we choose our favourite picture and had a go at drawing it.

We have also been enjoying going to the Library on Fridays. A reminder that students black reading folders need to be brought to school everyday but especially on Friday’s so that their readers can be changed over. Please come and see one of us for a new black library bag if your child has lost yours.

\

We spent a lot of time this week building our class culture and created a shared idea around kindness. We talked about being bucket fillers and how it feels if someone dips from our bucket. Have a look at our work!
