Term 3, Week 2

Welcome to another busy week in Year 1!

Congratulations to Courtney who has read 50 nights, Shayan who has read 100 nights and Dominic who has read 125 nights

In Word Study this week, we explored consonant blends. The consonant blends we learnt this week are: ‘br, cr, dr and fr’.

In Maths, we have continued exploring equal grouping and sharing. This week we challenged ourselves by sharing larger numbers of objects between multiple numbers of groups. We also explored what to do if there are an odd number of objects.

In Science, we have been learning about the needs and wants of living things. This week we created a Venn Diagram showing what animals and plants need to survive.

Term 3, Week 1

Welcome back to Term 3! The children have settled back in well this week and have been very busy. Across the board we have begun many new topics and you may have even noticed we have new furniture!

Congratulations to Audrey who finished reading 75 nights over the school holidays.

Congratulations to Mohith who finished 100 nights of reading!

Congratulations to Tanmay who finished 125 nights of reading!

Early on in the week, we visited the MUDLA. The children enjoyed exploring the different animals and their habitats.

In Word Study, we explored the various letter combinations that make the Long Vowel U sound.

In Word Study, we also learnt a new sight word ‘like’. This is a common word used in students reading and writing. Have a look at the sentences we came up with using the word like.

In Maths this term, we are learning to solve problems using equal sharing and grouping. This week we learnt the meaning of the word equal, identified groups of objects that were equal or not equal and had a go at sharing jelly beans equally between our friends.

Art

In art we have been looking at primary colours and how we can use these primary colours to make new ones.

We hope you have a cool weekend and get ready for another week in 1KS and 1EJ.

Term 2, Week 10

Hi All,

We have had a very busy end of term in Year 1. We are so proud of the progress and achievements that each and every student has made since the beginning of the year and are looking forward to seeing the progress continue into the second semester.

Congrats to Alissa who has read 25 nights, Shayan who has read 75 nights and Harjap who has read 125 nights.

Congratulations to Zayin for reading 50 nights!

Congratulations to Marley for reading 75 nights!

Congratulations to Monairene for reading 75 nights!

Here is a little insight to what we got up to this week.

In literacy, We have been learning to recognise and write the common graphemes that can be used to represent the long /o/ sound in our writing.

We also learn’t a new sight word! This week we focused on the sight word ‘were’. We had a go at tap-spelling the word, writing it with correct spelling and wrote our own sentences.

Science

In science students have been investigating Habitats of animals especially the animals from the MUDLA.

We wish everyone a safe and happy 2 week break, and look forward to seeing you all on the 22nd of July!

Term 2, Week 9

Hello Week 9! We have had another busy and fun week full of learning in our classroom.

Congratulations to Dominic for showcasing his piano skills at the Assembly Friday.

Congratulations to Mohith for reading 75 nights!

Congratulations to Tanmay for reading 100 nights!

In Maths, we continued looking at the operation Subtraction. This week we had a go at using number lines, concrete materials, drawing dots and counting backwards on our fingers to help solve a range of sums. We also had a go at solving worded problems.

In literacy, we have explored the many letter combinations that make the sound long vowel /i/.

In health, we looked at the meaning of the words ‘unfair’ and ‘fair’. We read a story about a boy making fair and unfair choices and discussed with our peers things that we thought were fair and unfair. We each chose 1 of our ideas and drew them in our book with a matching sentence.

In Science, we continued exploring the needs and wants of living things. We had a look at an astronaut going to the moon and brainstormed what we think we would need to take. Here is what we came up with.

Term 2, Week 8

Wow! We can’t believe that we only have 2 weeks left of term 2! We have had a busy week beginning new topics and continuing on with others.

A reminder that the children should be bringing their library bags and books to school each day. This ensures that they always have books at their appropriate level to read independently, with a teacher or with support staff in the room and allows the teachers a chance to test sight words.

This week we have…

Explored the operation of ‘subtraction’ in Maths. We learnt a few strategies like counting using fingers, counting backwards, counting on ten frames and crossing out objects to help us solve a range of problems using numbers 0-20.

Investigated how ‘Jez’ adds onomatopoeia and big and bold into his writing.

Onomatopoeia: Words List & Examples - ThinkWritten

Animal Onomatopoeia Games

Explored the graphemes that make the long /e/ sound. We had a go at writing words and sentences that included the ‘ee’, ‘ea’, ‘ey’ and ‘y’ all making the long vowel e sound.

Explored the commonly used sight word ‘are’. The students practiced tap-spelling, writing and identifying the word in sentences.

Explored the differences between ‘needs’ and ‘wants’. The students reflected on the things animals and plants need to survive. As a class we sorted a range of images into whether they were a need or a want and the students drew their own examples in their books.

Explored organic and geometrical shapes. We created our own shape pictures, depicting an underwear scene using a variety of the shapes we have learnt this term.

In Technology, we explored Bird’s Eye View. The students had to think about what a snowman would look like from a bird’s eye view and create it using oil pastels and a rubbing technique. Have a look at our finished products!

Have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you Monday ready for more learning!

Term 2 week 7

Hi all welcome back to a very short week of learning in 1KS and 1EJ. It was amazing to see everyone get straight back into learning after the short break!

In Literacy this week, we have been studying the long a sound that can be represented in different was like, a_e, ay and ai. Check out some of our amazing sentences.

In Maths, We have been looking at how to problem solve worded problems. We looked at reading the problem, looking at the key words and figuring out what equation we needed to solve it.

In Art, we continued looking at shapes and how we can use them creatively to make new monsters.

Assembly

Well done to all students in 1EJ and 1KS for their hard work and dedication at our Assembly. The students worked hard all week practicing and preparing to be on stage. They all showed great bravery, persistence and teamwork and we are very proud of them all!

A big thank you also, to the families and friends that attended the assembly today. We hope you enjoyed the show!
