As this Friday is a pupil free day the students are not able to go to their usual library lesson. We are instead going to go to the Library on Wednesday to ensure the children have new books for the holidays. We ask that you please have a look at home for any ‘missing’ books and that all children bring their library bags on this day!
Welcome to Week 9! We had a wonderful and busy week this week in preparation for Easter. Even in a shorter week the children achieved so much learning and are starting to become really brave learners. Have a look at pictures from our week!
In Maths, this week we have continued our learning around counting by 10s to 120. We have been practicing counting each day to a variety of counting songs and have engaged with a range of different activities. We completed an activity where we had to glue the multiples of ten in order on a caterpillars body.
We also had a go at representing collections of 10 using materials in the classroom and recording the multiples of ten on a sticky note.
We have been practicing writing numbers larger than 100. Have a look at our rockets that count up by 10s to 130! WOW
In Religion, this week we explored the lead up to Easter and the importance of these days in the Catholic Church. We went on a prayer walk around the school and used our i-pads to learn about each Station of the Cross. The students enjoyed reflecting on how they are like Jesus and made connections to times where they would have felt sad, lonely or have needed help from another person just like Jesus did during Easter. We spent each day reading stories, watching videos and drawing our own interpretation of Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. Here are some photos of our work this week!
The children also had the opportunity to make an Easter basket and learn’t how to draw the Easter Bunny!.
Our focus sounds in Word Study this week, were ‘w, v and y’. The children have shown great improvement in their letter name and sound recognition and are beginning to write more complex sentences during this time.
In HASS, we have been continuing to look at the past, present and future. This week we explored toys from the past and the present. We sorted a range of toys as a class into past, present and both then the children had a go sorting them on their own.
We hope you all have a safe and happy Easter and spend some time with your families. We sent the children home today with a small gift to enjoy over the long weekend.
We look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday for Week 10.

Welcome to Week 8! We have had a busy week celebrating Harmony Week and all of the things that make us unique and special here at Holy Family. The children made lovely connections between Harmony Day and our current learning in Religion being that God loves all of us no matter our differences and that our differences should be celebrated. It was great to see all of the students dressed in cultural dress and/or orange clothing on Friday.
Reading at home!
Congratulations to Audrey, Tanmay, Dominic and Marley who have completed 25 nights of reading at home and have been awarded a sticker in their reading journals!
This week we read the story of Palm Sunday. We created our own palm leaves and wrote the word ‘Hosanna’ in the middle. Each class in Holy family has decorated their door for Palm Sunday to show off to other classes next Monday!
Harmony Day
For Harmony Day the students created medallions focusing on the orange.
We have almost made our way through all of the single sounds during Word Study. This week our focus sounds were ‘b, j and z’.

This week, in Maths we have continued to consolidate our understanding of counting by 5s through a range of tasks. The students had a go at showcasing to us their knowledge and strengths when counting by 5s through an assessment piece. Later in the week the students began a new topic. We are now exploring and learning how to count to by 10s to 120.
In Religion, we have been working on creating our own retell of the Creation story. As a class we watched and listened to numerous versions of the Creation story and the children made the connection that ‘God is our Creator’ and that every living thing was created by God. The children created mini books where they had a go at writing a sentence and drawing a matching picture to show what God created on each of the 7 days.
We asked the children to show us their favourite page. Have a look at their hard work 🙂
In Hass, we explored a range of images and compared the differences in everyday tasks from the past to the present. We discussed that in the past there was not a lot of the technology that we have today and that meant that a lot of things had to be done by hand. Today we had a go at making our very own butter by hand!
Just a reminder that this week we have been celebrating Harmony Week.
This Friday 22nd of March students are encouraged to wear traditional cultural clothing, orange or school uniform.
Students will also be able to order a special Harmony Day lunch of Butter Chicken or Chickpea Curry and rice and an Orange Jelly for $6.50 through the canteen. The normal canteen menu for lunch orders will not be available on Harmony Day however the canteen will still be open at recess.
Just a reminder that next week we will be celebrating Harmony Week as a school community.
Harmony Day is a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity. It is a week of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. The ongoing theme of Harmony Day is “everyone belongs”. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians equally belong to this nation and enrich it. At Holy Family each class will be involved in activities leading up to and on Harmony Day.
All families are invited to a Harmony Day morning tea in the staff room on Tuesday 19 Marchat 9:00am. Please join us for a bite to eat and to get to know other families in a relaxed environment. For catering purposes please RSVP to emma.finos@holyfamily.catholic.edu.au

Welcome to Week 7. We have had another wonderful week of learning!
In technologies, we explored creating graphs to represent our favourite ‘everyday’ foods. The students chose 5 of their favourite everyday foods to eat, collected their own data using tally marks, added the tallies together to create a total and showed their findings on a bar graph.
This week our focus sounds in word study were ‘u, l and f‘. We also explored the sight word on. When exploring these sounds and words students take part in a range of activities. They have a go at playing sound/word games, have a go at writing on a whiteboard and then complete an activity in their books. Students also use their word detective skills to find our focus sounds in their library books.

We started a new topic in Maths this week. We are now looking at how to skip count by 5s when counting a collection of objects. We have talked lots about why skip counting is a more efficient way of counting and also noticed a pattern being that each number ends in a 5 then a 0.
We read a the story Starry Fish which was all about starfish counting by 5s. We then had a go creating our own starfish out of play dough and gave them 5 legs using matchsticks. Have a look at our hard work.
I can skip count by 5s to 100. I can paste the missing number in order.
In HASS, we have been exploring how families have changed over time and how all of our families look different. This week we worked in pairs to discuss the similarities and differences between each others families. The students enjoyed talking about their own family and found it extremely interesting that their peers family homes looked a little different to theirs. Have a look at our drawings.
Welcome families to a look at 1EJ and 1KS’s Week 6! We are over half-way of Term 1. The children have been flourishing in their approach to learning and commitment to trying new things. This week we have continued our learning of single letter sounds, investigated creating blurbs, showed off our new knowledge using place value and explored how different emotions look and feel during our health lessons.
I can correctly write the letters ‘d, g and o’.
I can record some words and a sentence that have a ‘d, g and o’ sound in them.

I can partition 2-digit number using place value.
I can identify different feelings and emotions.
I can sort and show different emotions.
In Maths this week we have continued exploring teen numbers and place value. We have been practicing building a group of ten and counting how many more blocks we need to represent the ones.
In Word Study this week we have been focusing on the sounds ‘h, r and m’. Have a look at the improvement in our handwriting already!

In Writers Workshop we have been creating some amazing narrative stories. The children had a go at creating a character, choosing a setting and making sure their story had a beginning, middle and end.
Have a look at our front covers! In Year 1, we know that a front cover must have a title, a coloured picture and the authors name.
HASS
In HASS we have been looking at families and how all our families are unique to me.
Here’s a look at what week 4 looked like in 1EJ and 1KS. We have had a very busy week full of learning, exploring and fun!
In Religion, we had a think about what God looks like to us. We had a go at drawing God and recorded words around that remind us of him. Some common responses were ‘God is love, creator, protector and kind’. Have a look at our finished work.
Continuing on with Word Study this week we explored the letters ‘c, k and e’. We are getting better at hearing the sound of the day in words and have even been trying to find it in our readers. Have a look at the sentences we created in our books.

In technologies we learnt about the different food groups. We had a go labeling and colouring the different foods found in each food group.
In History, we have been exploring time lines. This week we had a go at ordering different events in our calendar year.
What another wonderful week of learning and playing together! We are beginning to work so well together as a team and the children have been enjoying getting to learn and play with new children as well as reconnect with their friends from Reception.
In Word Study this week we explored the sounds ‘p, i and n’. Below are some of our jolly phonics songs and actions if the children want to keep practicing at home.
In Writers Workshop we have been looking at how to create exciting and unique characters. We used Story Maths to help us think of a new character for our books. Story Maths is where you add one idea to another to create an amazing idea.
For example: I could add a dog in the first box. Then add a wizard to another box to make a ‘Wizard Dog’. Have a look at some of the clever creations the students came up with. We had things like ‘super pizza, dinosaur dogs and a spongebob sonic’.
In Maths this week we have continued learning all about number! We practiced using the correct formation to write the numbers ‘5, 6, 7, 8 and 9’. As well as practiced forwards and backwards counting, using number lines and writing the number that comes before and after single digit numbers. Have a look at us hard at work!
On Tuesday we celebrated ShroveTuesday.
In Word Study this week we investigated and had a go at writing the sight word the. This is a very common sight word in the children’s readers and is a popular choice of word when beginning to write sentences. Have a look at the great writing we have been doing!
