Wow! What a year. What a privilege it has been sharing each day with this awesome group of people. So much fun, learning and growth throughout the year and so many new adventures awaiting!

We wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for entrusting these beautiful humans into our care each day. It has been delightful to watch their growth and development over the course of this year.

Wishing you all the best as you journey into 2025. We hope the new year bring lots of love, learning and laughter.

Term 4, Week 8

Welcome to Week 8. We are getting into the festive spirit in our classes with lots of Christmas craft and fun.

Health- Over the past few weeks, we’ve been learning about empathy. The students were given three different scenarios and asked to write about how they would show empathy in each situation.

 

 

Term 4, Week 7

Welcome to Week 7! Carols rehearsals have been in full swing! Our two songs are below if you would like to practise at home. On the big day it would be great to see all the students in christmas colours (red, green and white). Please ensure sensible footwear is worn so that the children can feel comfortable and confident in dancing on the stage.

Technologies- This week, we discussed how icons on an iPad can be considered a type of glyph. The students then created their own custom iPad icons on a template, each representing different aspects of their personalities and interests.

Term 4, Week 6

Welcome to Week 6!

Here we are doing our morning literacy investigations, with students busy reading and writing. It’s a great way to start each day!

English

During book making this week we have continued our focus on letter writing; discussing formal and informal letters. Through joint construction we explored letters within books and how the children can add letters into their own stories.

For Word Study this week we explored the ‘soft c’ and ‘hard c’ rule and investigated using the soft c in three different literacy activities. Check out the catchy tune below, it helped us to remember that a soft c sounds like /s/.

Technologies- Today for technologies, we learnt about glyphs. The students created their own robot glyphs telling us a little about themselves. They had to follow the codes to show what their robot would look like.

Today we continued to work on our city – we focused on the natural elements, such as trees, grass, bushes, rivers etc

Term 4, Week 5

Welcome to week 5! The term is flying by with only FOUR weeks to go! This week we celebrated Remembrance Day with a special assembly honouring service men and women who died in service of our country. We shared this special song to remember to be thankful and to be grateful.

During Maths we started our new topic about position and location. Students played a game with a partner where they had to direct their monkey to a banana using a spinner and positional language. Here are the students at work…

Health- In health this week, we spoke about trust. We created a flower and wrote the names of our trusted adults on the petals. We then wrote a reason as to why they are on our trusted network.

Last week we designed our parts of our class city.

Today we started to build our constructed parts – building, structures, stadiums etc using 3D nets.

  

Term 4, Week 4

Welcome to Week 4! Here is our November calendar.

English

This week we have continued working on suffixes during Word Study. For Writer’s Workshop students have been working on their very own Oral Presentations. Several brave presenters had a go at speaking about their favourite book character in front of the class. They used this handy template to help them plan and present their talk. Well done Year 1’s.

 Learning Intentions

Students will start designing a new city!. They will be given an A2 card which has a road that connects the other pieces together (like a puzzle) which will create a new city. They will be given instructions on how to build all their components each lesson. This will happen over a 3 weeks.

Today we chose a partner and selected a part of the city they wanted to create…. e.g school, bank, airport etc. They worked together to make a birds eye map of what their part of the city would need / look like. They needed to include some buildings, the road and some natural features.

Term 4, Week 3

The term is whizzing by with another week completed. We even began learning one of our Christmas songs that we will perform on carols night. You may like to practise along at home to the words of the song ‘Jesus Joy of the Highest Heaven’.

This week we revisited prefixes and suffixes. We will be investigating how prefixes and suffixes are added to a base word over the next few weeks. Check out Elaynah’s amazing work below. She was able to identify and record the base and suffix of each word and also completed 6 sentences!

Learning intention: We are learning that places can change over time.

Success criteria: I can create a new  garden for Holy family catholic School and add a special feature to surprise the community.

Health- For health this week, we spoke about the emergency services available. The students made their own phones and practised different scenarios where they could ring the number 000 in an emergency. They used a checklist to help them.

 

 

 

 

Term 4, Week 2

Last Sunday we celebrated our annual SPRING FAIR it was wonderful to see so many of you there! The night concluded with an amazing fireworks display. Some of our classes favourite parts were the fireworks, donuts, rides, lollies and toys.

This week 1SA and 1PN have continued their learning about word families; investigating onset and rime. Onset and rime are two parts of a spoken word. The onset is the initial consonant sound, digraph, or blend that comes before a vowel sound, for example, /b/ in the word bug. The rime includes the vowel and all consonant sounds that follow it.

Term 4, Week 1

Welcome to Term 4, Week 1.

We hope you all enjoyed the two week break and ready for the final term of YEAR 1!We began the week by setting learning goals. We discussed having a GROWTH MINDSET and the importance of positive thinking!

This term we are also looking at WORD FAMILIES.Understanding word families helps us to identify rhyme. Check out some of our amazing book work below…

Religion- This week for religion, we started a unit of work on the Holy Spirit. We watched 2 Gospel stories where the Holy Spirit is present. These were in the form of fire and a dove. The students wrote about how the Holy Spirit can help them in their lives.

Term 4 – Unit Overview: During HASS students investigate activities that occur within places. They discuss why and how spaces within places can be rearranged for different purposes. They identify the activities located in their place and examine why various activities are located where they are. They conclude the unit by creating their own City!

Lesson 1 – Learning Intention Students will be able to: Describe how spaces within places can be rearranged for different purposes.

TASK: Students are to design their DREAM classroom or a map of their current classroom (we will introduce graph paper and rulers etc. later)
