Term 2, Week 1

Welcome to Term 2! We hope you all enjoyed the holiday break and ready for lots of fun and learning together this term. A few reminders to kick start the term…

  • Students to wear winter uniform in term 2 and term 3
  • Sports uniform still to be worn each Tuesday
  • Students to bring black folders to and from school every day
  • Home learning books with sight words to practise will be distributed, these will need to come to school each day in black folders

What a busy start to the term. On our very first day back we began a new topic for word study all about digraphs where two letters team up to make one sound. We practised the digraphs /ck/, /ff/ and /ss/

In order to remember to punctuate our work, we began learning about KUNG FU PUNCTUATION. You may like to have a go at home.

During Maths we started a new topicย  about PATTERNS. Here we are at work making patterns with different materials…

 

 

Religion- For the first few weeks during religion lessons, we will be learning about Mary. This week we watched the story of the Annunciation, where an angel came to Mary to tell her that she will have a son called Jesus, who will be the son of God.

 

During term 1 in WORD STUDYย  – we were learning to SPELL these sight words. Some words don’t follow their phonological sounds therefore some words we need to just learn by heart. We covered the SPELLING of these 15 words (below) in term 1. Today we will be checking on each children’s ability to recall the correct spelling of all 15 of these words below. If you think your child would benefit from some extra practice SPELLING these words we would love you to practice at home with them :). In term 2 we will be moving onto new words.

Our Science topic this term is weather and we’ve also looked at rights and responsibility of the child during Health. Phew… a very busy first week!

Term 1, Week 9

We began the week with our Palm Sunday celebrations. Mr Norris shared a prayer with us before our classes walked around the school viewing artwork displayed on each classroom door. Wow! What amazing displays. We particulaly liked the art by 2MR and 2NP who put so much detail into their drawings! On our return we watched the following song celebrating Jesusโ€™ arrival into Jerusalem.

Our classes also explored the ‘Stations of the Cross’ by using iPads to find QR codes around the school. Each station shared a different reflection about Holy Week.

Our class has many skilled authors and illustrators! During book making we have watched one of our characters come to life using RakugakiAR. This app allows you to see your characters in 3D, feed them and play with them. It can spark a world of possibilities for book making!

During Technologies we explored traditional Kaurna food and recorded foods that were eaten in the past.

Health- For our health lesson this week, we spoke about places that we can go to, that we feel safe in. The students recorded some of these places and wrote why they feel safe there:

Mathematics- This week we have been counting by 10s. The students created their own rocket ships by counting by 10s up to 120.

Term 1, Week 8

Welcome to Harmony Week where we celebrated the amazing diversity of this community! We began the week sharing this beautiful song about belonging.

Our focus letters were f, b and l

Our focus words were she and it.

Mathematics- This week, we have been doing lots of learning to do with ‘counting by 5s’.

On Wednesday, the students worked with a partner to count by 5s. They used match sticks and labelled their learning:

HASS: We are learning how everyday life has changed from the past.

We viewed some videos from the 1900’s. We talked about how lots of the technology that we have today wasnโ€™t around in the past and a lot of things had to be done by hand โ€“ making butter was one of those!!! we then worked together to make our own butter using just a jar, some cream and a lot of man power.

Success Criteria: I can share / draw how everyday life is different from past to present.

HARMONY DAY

 

Term 1, Week 7

Welcome to Week 7. With only 4 days this week, we sure packed a lot in!

Our focus letters were /u/ and /l/
Our focus words were โ€˜herโ€™ and โ€˜hisโ€™

Tuesday morning began with literacy investigations; reading and writing our way into the day.

Then we continued to work on our tens and ones during Mathematics. We also began our new topic about skip counting. Here’s a catchy tune to help you remember.

Our focus for Drama this week was role play. On Wednesday, we became possums inspired by the book โ€˜Possum Magicโ€™ written by Mem Fox. Students made a possum mask to help become the characters of Poss and Hush. Role play involves acting out these roles, using imagination and creativity to bring the characters to life using their bodies, voices and actions. We have some great actors and actresses amongst our classes!

HASS

Our Learning Intention: We are learning how family structures have changed over time.

Success Criteria: I can share how family structures have changed from past to present. I can share things that are the same about my family and my friends family.

We discussed that across time, families have always looked different to each other, however in the past they tended to be more similar than our wide variety of families today. We noticed that in the past, families all had similar structure and often were quiet large. We noticed that today we can have families such as nuclear families, one-child families, families that live in 2 different houses, step parents, step siblings, extended families and kinship groups etc.

Religion- The past two weeks we have been looking at the Project Compassion campaign, and where the money goes when we raise it. Thank you so much to the families that have raised money for this cause, so far. This week, we viewed a video about Leaia and her family from Samoa. The students had to compare their life to Leaia’s life,ย  finding similarities and differences.

Friday –

Today we were strengthening our blending skills:

Blending is the process of joining one or more sounds together in order to read a word. Sometimes it helps to say the separate sounds several times over so that children can begin to hear the word you are blending. For example: d/o/g, d/o/g, d/o/g = dog!

Term 1, Week 6

Welcome to Week 6, we also welcome in the new season of AUTUMN. Discussing months and seasons is a great way for students to learn about time, we begin each morning by looking at our monthly calendar and upcoming events.

This week we have focused on the sounds /d/ /g/ and /o/ and our focus has been writing on the lines and clear finger spaces.ย ย Just a reminder when discussing and encouraging writing at homeโ€ฆ Before becoming a conventional speller (like you) there are specific stages that a child will progress through; all important, all valid! Each and every student is on their own writing journeys and will be in different stages of the writing continuum pictured below.

Mr Terminell0 came into our class on Wednesday to read us a lovely story called ‘The Golden Rule’ By Cooper Ilene. It had a lovely and very important message…

You may like to think about how to follow the golden rule at school and home. The Golden Rule encourages us to treat others as we would like to be treated. For instance, most people appreciate it when others treat them with respect, kindness, and love. Logically, then, we should โ€œdo the same wayโ€ to others.โ€”Luke 6:31

 

Technologies- In food technologies this week, we spoke about everyday foods. The students had to come up with 5 everyday foods and surveyed the class about which one was their favourite. They then graphed their results:

HASS – This week in HASS we are learningย  about different types of families.

MATHS – This week we have been working on our understanding of tens and ones

Term 1, Week 5

Welcome to Week 5, we are nearly halfway through our first term of Year 1. This week we investigated the sounds /h/ /f/ and /m/ as well as the sight word โ€˜onโ€™. Students have been working diligently on their handwriting. We have been noticing that some of our letters must be taller than others and some need to fall under the line. Here is a reminder when practising at home ๐Ÿ™‚

During Maths lessons we have been focusing on teen numbers. You may like to listen to this catchy tune at home to practise place value!

Week 5 finished up with our amazing assembly. Well done to all the students! Thank you to all our wonderful families for practising lines at home and for your encouraging words.

 

Today we hosted the Assembly. All the children did an amazing job, being brave, and working as a team to present our learning.

Term 1, Week 4

Welcome to wonderful week FOUR! Our first month of learning together has been a busy one! Each day we give the students the following reminders to ensure we have a safe and happy day of learning. You may like to chat with your child about our classroom rules.

With our ‘Teamwork’ assembly fast approaching the students have been learning several songs. The song linked below will be used during prayer, if you’d like to practise at home.

During English lessons this week we have been working hard on our sounds and sight words! We have also continued our fabulous book making. We discussed the way various authors begin their stories and had a go writing our own.

For Maths, students continued exploring correct number formation and worked on recognition of numbers to 120. We had a go at creating a number chart puzzle, thinking hard about numbers that come before and after.

Book making- The students have been doing a wonderful job making books this year. They are being brave spellers when creating their books. Here are the children in action:

Term 1, Week 3

Hello to our wonderful parent and student community of 1SA and 1PN. Bet you’ve been wondering what we’ve been up to this week. Well… take a look!

This week during word study we have focused on the letters p, i and n as well as the sight words ‘a’ and ‘that’. Here are some students from 1SA practising and investigating the sound /Ii/.

For book making we have focused on creating a detailed front cover that includes a tile, picture and our name. We noticed that authors often put their main character on the front cover and sometimes even the setting! Take a sneak peak of some of our front covers created during Writer’s Workshop.

We have also continued working on our number formation and subitising during Mathematics. This clever skill of subitising is whenย  you are able to look at a group of objects and realise how many there are without counting. You can practise at home too with this subitising song!

This week we also celebrated important events on the liturgical calendar; Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. For Shrove Tuesday, also known as ‘Pancake Day’, we shared some delicious pancakes together and on Wednesday we celebrated with a whole school mass to mark the beginning of Lent.

 

Technologies- For food technologies last week, the students made a list of foods that they like the taste of, and foods that they don’t like the taste of.

This week, the students had to label the foods that they drew as ‘everyday’ foods and ‘sometimes’ foods. Here is what they came up with:

Upcoming Event

1sA and 1PN will be hosting a whole school assembly on Thursday, Week 5 (29/2/24) – (Friday the 1st of March is a Pupil Free Day). Pencil it in your diaries! We hope you can all attend! Your child might bring home a reading part in their black folders next week, if so, please practise together at home!

Term 1, Week 2

Welcome to Week 2. A big thank you to the parents who were able to attend our โ€˜Information Eveningโ€™ on Monday, we appreciate your time! If you were unable to attend please note the following information in regards to parent volunteers.

There are numerous opportunities where parents can become involved in the school including the following…

  • As a member of the School Board;
  • Helping in the canteen
  • Assisting in the reading program by hearing children read
  • Going on excursions

In order to do one of the above listed activities you must complete a โ€™Working With Children Checkโ€™ and undertake an induction including online child protection training. The cost will be covered by the school, see office for more information if interested.ย  If you already have a current Working With Children Check through another organisation, this can be used at our location. Please note that the application process for the Working With Children Check can take a number of weeks but the WWCC is valid for 5 years.

This week we began our new topic for Maths: learning all about numbers! We practised our number formation and engaged in a range of Numeracy investigations. The students have particularly enjoyed singing our ‘Big Numbers Song’. You may like to listen along at home…

This term in English we are investigating sounds and digraphs. Throughout word study we will be looking at letter formation, sounding out, identifying/locating sounds in words, high frequency words and their origins, spelling, sentence formation and picture/word association. Check out the students โ€˜Bumping Upโ€™ their phonics work this week to include sentences!

 

 

On Thursday in our first HASS lesson, we set up a gallery walk – to set the scene of our terms history topic.

Students explored images from the past (with no prior context) and made observations about what the images were and how they were used. We returned as a class and reviewed the images that sparked the students interests and discussed what they thought each was. We asked the students to share what they will be exploring in HASS this unit?

Religion- This week in religion we watched the story from Luke’s Gospel, ‘Jesus Blesses Little Children’.

We also discussed Jesus’ commandment about treating others the way you want to be treated. For this task, the students were asked to choose another person and write a positive message about their character.

Friday we celebrated Vietnamese / Chinese New Year – it is the year of the Dragon. We made our own Chinese dragons.
