HASS- This week in HASS, we’ve been learning about what life was like in the past and how people did things without modern technology. The children interviewed their parents or grandparents to learn about their childhood and talked about how things were different back then. We watched videos about daily life in the early 1900s and compared it to our lives today.

To experience the past, we made our own butter by shaking cream in a jar—just like people used to do! The children loved seeing the cream turn into butter and enjoyed tasting it on bread.

Maths- In Maths, we’ve started exploring addition and subtraction. This lesson, we focused on what happens when we add or subtract zero. We learned that adding or taking away zero doesn’t change the number—it stays the same!
We watched Numberblocks: Zero the Hero and used real objects to show this idea. The children then played a fun game in pairs where they rolled dice, added or subtracted zero, and wrote number sentences to match. This helped them understand the concept in a hands-on and engaging way. We’re excited to keep building on our addition and subtraction skills in the coming weeks!

Religion- In religion lessons, we have been learning about Mary. This week we watched the story of the Visitation, where Mary visited her cousin, Elizabeth. The students then had to draw and write about what happened in the story.

Technologies- This week, the students designed their own mask, which they will make next week:

Term 2, Week 2

Technologies- This week in technologies, the students used their plan to create their emoji masks. They tried to make it as similar as they could to their design.

This was the create part of the design process.

Here are their creations:

In Religion, we have been exploring Holy Week and its significant days, including Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. Both classes participated in a reflective journey around the school, visiting the different Stations of the Cross to deepen their understanding of the Easter story. Using our class iPads, we scanned QR codes at each station to read the associated story and engage with reflection questions. This interactive experience supported meaningful discussion and personal reflection. Here are some photos of our students showing reverence and thoughtful engagement throughout the activity.

Have a great holiday and we will see you all next term!

Market Day- On Wednesday, Holy Family Catholic School hosted Market Day, where Year 5 and 6 students had the opportunity to create their own businesses and produce various items for sale at their stalls. The students thoroughly enjoyed the event, offering a wide range of products including slime, paper planes, candies, s’mores, milkshakes, and more. In addition, students participated in a dance party, a bean bag toss game, and had the chance to spin the prize wheel. Below are some photos capturing the highlights of the day.

Mathematics- In mathematics, after becoming proficient in skip counting by 10, we have now advanced to skip counting by 5s. The students used matchsticks to create collections of five and then recorded the corresponding skip counting numbers next to them. Several students worked diligently to reach the number 200.

Art – Drama:

We have been exploring contemporary stories, such as Wombat Stew and Possum Magic, and acting out scenes from these narratives. Our focus has now shifted to Indigenous storytelling traditions known as The Dreaming. As a group, we read The Rainbow Serpent and performed it. Here is the story of The Rainbow Serpent:

Students showcased their acting skills by embodying various characters from the story. We then worked together as a class to act out the snake, forming a long chain with our bodies and moving around the room to the rhythm of the didgeridoo.

Technologies-

We presented some of the food choices available in the canteen to the class. We then had a discussion about which foods are considered “everyday foods” and which are “sometimes foods.” Afterwards,  we asked the students to suggest some foods they would like to see added to the canteen menu that aren’t there already.

Term 1, Week 6

A busy week in 1PN and 1ST this week with our assembly. Thank you so much to the parents and families for coming and supporting the students. They did a fantastic job! Here are some photos of the performance:

Have a great long weekend and we will see you on Tuesday.

Term 1, Week 5

In HASS, we have been focusing on the concept of history. So far, we have explored the past, present, and future, and have referred to these concepts throughout the week. Last week, the students created their own detailed timelines, reflecting events from age 1 through to age 6/7. They connected these events to the ideas of past, present, and future. This week, we shifted our focus to the months of the year and created a year-long timeline. This task required students to sequence events from the beginning to the end of the year. We also marked our current position on the number line by placing a star. The students appeared to enjoy this activity, and it’s exciting we get to share the timelines with you all.

Technologies- For technologies this term, we have been learning about different food types. The students had to show what food products can turn into other food products.

E.g. potatoes ➡️ chips, apples ➡️ apple pie

Have a great weekend and we will see you on Monday.

Show what food products can make other food products.
