Thursday 22nd July: Online Learning

Good morning year 1s and welcome to another wonderful day of online learning! We hope that yesterday went well and that you are all continuing to stay safe, healthy and happy during this time.

Please note that during the late morning/early afternoon, Miss Jessop and myself will be contacting you to check-in and see how you are going. This will take place via a phone call with your parents.

We have been working together as a year 1 team to put together the learning for you to complete at home. We are also practicing enjoying the little things in life and had a laugh together on the phone, changing our faces with different filters to be a little bit silly!

Please remember that during this time, your engagement in learning is wonderful to see but your wellbeing is our priority. Please see below the suggested learning tasks for today. Please take your time completing these and do your best with the resources you have available at home.

.

Literacy

Reading

Please spend 5-10 minutes reading one of your levelled reader books if you have them with you. Otherwise, please enjoy the following audiobook below:

.

Writer’s Workshop

For Writer’s Workshop we are continuing to discuss how students can be effective readers to an audience. If possible, we ask that you spend some time with your child and discuss what effective reading sounds like. You may like to focus on the tone and pitch of voice, different voices for different characters, and using noises for extra effect.

Show them the video below, which outlines Michael Rosen’s top tips for performing poems and stories. Ask them to name and notice the strategies the author uses to perform his books.

Then show them the video below, asking them to name and notice any of the tips used Michael Rosen. Do you think she uses an ‘expert’ tone or ‘story’ tone?

Following your discussion about effective reading strategies, students are able to continue working on a book of their choice, or start a new one. Remind students that authors use words and pictures in their writing to make their book interesting. Likewise, we are all brave spellers who always stretch our sounds out and try our best!

.

Fitness Break

Keeping active is one of the best ways we can take care of ourselves! If possible, you might like to go outside and play, visit the PE Blog for activities, or follow the yoga video below.

.

Science

In Science this term, we have started learning about how materials can be physically changed. We have discussed how we can change a material by scrunching, squishing, stretching, pulling, twisting, knotting, folding, and bending.

Today, we are focusing on the ability to bend a material. Ask your child to stand and move parts of their body to demonstrate bending:

What can you bend on your body?

Can you bend it back again?

Why do think we are able to bend our knees and elbows?

What words describe ‘bending’?

What objects or materials can be bent? (Look around the house and see if you can find any).

.

Task instructions:

In your learning journal, write and draw as many objects or materials you can think of that can be bent without breaking or changing the original shape. You might want to think back to our lesson on Monday, where we looked at bending a plastic spoon, a piece of paper and a string to help you with your brainstorming.

Brain Break

It’s time to get up and get your groove on! Please dance along to the following video for our brain break!

Trolls: Can’t Stop The Feeling | GoNoodle

.

Health

In Health this term, we are learning about the importance of keeping safe by recognising the difference between appropriate and inappropriate touch. To begin, we ask that you spend some time with your child to discuss the importance of personal space; what it is, why it is important, and why we must respect everyone’s personal space.

Following this discussion, please view the video below and ask your child how someone might know that there is someone else in their personal space. They might discuss feeling uncomfortable, crowded or touched. What might they do if they felt someone was in their personal space?

Task instructions:

In your learning journal, create a detailed drawing of someone inside someone else’s personal space. Around your picture, list your responses to the questions asked by your parent:

How might someone know that there is someone else in their personal space?

What might someone do if they felt a person was in their personal space?

Physical Education

Please visit the PE Blog to see today’s Sport lesson, which focuses on throwing and target games. If you don’t have sporting equipment, be creative! You can always use rolled up socks for a ball and a washing basket for a target.

Don’t forget that you are welcome to share any learning that you get up to at home via reply on the blog or by emailing your class teacher.

1SD and 5/6EM Buddy Visit

On Friday, 1SD visited our 5/6EM for a buddy reading session. The students worked marvellously with their older buddies and read for the whole visit. It was wonderful to see both year levels sharing the reading role and practicing their fluency, comprehension and decoding skills. Below are some images of our wonderful reading.

Writer’s Workshop

This week in Writer’s Workshop we have begun our new unit which explores ‘how to’ texts. The students have enjoyed comparing the similarities and differences between their storybooks (narratives) and various ‘how to’ texts.

Pictured below are images from our introductory lesson on Monday, where students were immersed in the world of ‘how to’ texts by exploring, noticing and naming various textual structures and features.

Casual Day: Bring in a can for Fred’s Van

Bring in a can for Fred’s Van…

This Friday, the 21/05/2021, students are able to wear casual clothes if they bring in a can of non-perishable goods. This could include, but is not limited too, cans of soup, vegetables, spaghetti, baked beans, or any other non-perishable goods.

These will be donated to Fred’s Van, a part of the St Vincent de Paul Society, which provides comfort and a warm, nutritious meal for those in need.

Please feel free to bring these in any time throughout the week, Miss Jessop and myself will ensure to track who has brought a can in and is able to wear causal clothes on Friday.

Many thanks,

Miss Dowsett and Miss Jessop.
