Wednesday (Term 1 | Week 11)

A warm welcome to Wednesday

HEALTH

We continued learning about identifying risks. We brainstormed situations where someone would need to assess the risk, identify any warning signs and think about how they can keep safe in different locations, e.g., shopping centre, local park, end of sports practice, friend’s birthday party, walking home from school. We used these situations to create scenarios where we needed to consider our safety and assess the risk, asking questions such as: Who? What? How? Where? When? We rated levels of safety as little risk, possible risk and very risky. If we identified a  scenario as unsafe and very risky: we discussed what could be done, changed, added to make it safer.

LIBRARY

We shared a story by indigenous author/illustrator, Karen Rogers. The story is a tribute to a much-loved grandfather, celebrating First Nations Australian culture, country and the circle of life. It is told both in Kriol and English:

‘Dijan buk gada ola memri ai bin abum gada main abija from wen ai bin lilgel til imin libu wi. Imin titjim mi loda tings bla koltja en bla kantri. Mi hepi ba pasim det stori la main femili en bla pudum la dis buk.
This book has the memories I had of my grandfather from when I was small until he left us. He taught me many things about culture and country. I’m happy to pass this story on to my family and to put it in this book.’

With luscious artwork and a lyrical text, celebrated Ngukurr artist Karen Rogers evokes the world of her childhood in a remote part of the Northern Territory. Her story is a beautiful celebration of a special relationship, showing how culture is passed on from generation to generation.

GUIDED READING

Mrs Handforth worked with Ryley, Mya, Adhip, James and Annabella today. We read an information text about pythons and then answered questions about the text. We retrieved information that was directly stated in the text and also practised interpreting directly stated information too. We all read aloud beautifully and helped each other to decode and understand the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary.

Mrs Stam worked with Micheal, Zahra, Ethan, Tanish, Jason, Kai and Amanda. They shared a text called A Lesson Learnt and practised the comprehension skill of inference. This is where we have to work out (infer) what the author is hinting at or suggesting. It’s a bit like solving a puzzle by working out the clues.

We also undertook some fitness and Writer’s Workshop today, as well as investigating odd and even numbers in Mathematics.
