❤️‍🩹 National Apology to Stolen Generation Survivors ❤️‍🩹

Dear Families,

February 13 each year marks the anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations, who suffered trauma because of past government policies of forced child removal.

Many of these removals occurred as the result of laws and policies aimed at assimilating the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population into the predominately white community.

Stolen Generations survivors are some of Australia’s most vulnerable people and many have kept their stories and experiences secret for many years, even decades.

Through hearing the resilient stories of Stolen Generations survivors there is now a willingness for Australians to join in on the healing journey.

Each year, Reconciliation SA commission a film to help share ‘story’. This year’s documentary hears from the incredible Yankunytjatjara woman and author and illustrator Kunyi Anne McInerney, who was born on Todmorden Station near Oodnadatta. Please click on the link below (27:11 run time)

We have a lovely book in the library ‘Sorry Day’ written by Coral Vass and Dub Leffler, which depicts the National Apology.

Rodnella, Laura and Melissa ❤️

😋Shrove Tuesday🥞

Hi Families,

Next Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday. It is also known as Carnevale, which means “goodbye to meat”.

Traditionally, Catholics around the world would abstain from eating meat during Lent, as well as other indulgences.  This meant the removal of all flour, sugar and eggs from the kitchen. People in villages and towns would cook up a feast with the ingredients, adding to a festival or party feel. Today many people celebrate the day by eating pancakes, which have been made using the ingredients.

On Tuesday, 13th of February,  our class will have an opportunity to celebrate by eating pancakes together at 10:30am

We will be accomodating to dietary requirements, including any gluten free or egg free pancakes students may need.

Kindly,

Rodnella, Melissa and Laura 💛

🎍 Vietnamese & Chinese New Year 🧧

Hi Families,

You may be aware that this Saturday the 2024 Lunar New Year begins.

Children are welcome to wear traditional clothes or red clothing tomorrow Friday the 9th of February.

How is the Vietnamese & Chinese New Year celebrated?

Vietnamese & Chinese families gather together for a reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve, and clean their houses to sweep away bad fortune on New Year’s Day.

The global celebrations are an explosion of light and sound, involing bell ringing, firercakers and traditional lion dances.

Traditionally, kids would be given red envelopes stuffed with ‘lucky money’ and positive wishes on New Year’s Day.

Which animal is 2024?

The Chinese horoscope for 2024 reveals that the Year of the Dragon – specifically the wood dragon – will bring authority, prosperity, and good fortune.

Those born in the Year of the Dragon are said to possess a captivating demeanour, distinct personality, and strong leadership abilities; while the Wood Dragon Year brings evolution, improvement, and abundance, making it the perfect time for rejuvenated beginnings to set the foundation for long-term success.

How do we celebrate Lunar new year at Holy Family?

6LF and 5KF are hosting the assembly on Friday.

Additionally, Children are welcome to wear traditional clothes or red clothing tomorrow Friday the 9th of February.

Kindly,

Rodnella, Melissa and Laura 💛
