Dear Parents/Caregivers,
In 5KF and 6LF, we’ve been focusing on revising key mathematical concepts such as operations, fractions, factors, and number talks.
Today, our emphasis was on division and converting remainders into fractions. To begin, we engaged students in hands-on activities where they grouped themselves in numbers like 3, 6, 7, and 12, revealing those who were left over as remainders, providing a visual representation of this concept. We then discussed and explained step-by-step what a remainder represents and its relationship to whole numbers. Once this concept was grasped, we proceeded to demonstrate how to express remainders as fractions.
To further reinforce their understanding, we paired students from Year 5 and 6 together for peer teaching. This approach allowed students to support and guide each other through the equations, with teachers and educators circulating to provide additional support. Peer teaching is highly beneficial as it enhances student learning, improves communication skills, increases engagement, offers diverse perspectives, promotes collaboration, and encourages interaction between students from different classes.
Attached, you will find some photos from today’s activities.
Thank you,
Cassundra and Luke
