Book club 5KF & 6LF

Hi everyone,

5KF and 6LF have been collaborating on our “Book Club” project. In Book Club, students choose a text and make predictions before diving into the reading. Throughout the process, they apply inferencing skills and record insights on character development, setting, vocabulary usage, and the overall impact of language on the story. Today, both classes engaged in an interview session where they took on roles such as presenter, questioner, timer, and recorder. Collaborating effectively, they crafted interview questions that demonstrated their deep understanding of the book and significantly enhanced their analytical abilities.

Here are attached photos of 5KF and 6LF

Thank you,

Luke and Cassundra

Hi parents/caregivers

I am excited to announce that I will be the classroom teacher for 5KF for the remainder of the year! It’s wonderful to be back, and it has been fantastic to see all the kids and receive such a warm welcome.

This week, we have been focusing on these subjects:

Maths:
– Understanding 12-hour and 24-hour time formats.
– Learning the differences between the two types of time.
– Reading and writing time in the 24-hour format.
– I’ve hung two clocks in the room, each set to a different time throughout the day. Students are required to write these times in the 24-hour format.

Science:
– Exploring animal adaptations.
– Students are working on an assessment project where they choose an animal and create a poster detailing its location, environment, habitat, and both structural and behavioral adaptations.

Religion:
– Focusing on Caritas and the story of a woman named Ronita.
– Students will create a 1-2 minute video explaining Ronita’s life and comparing it to their own lives and those of others.

Art:
– Studying Aboriginal Art.
– Students followed a procedural video on “How to Draw a Kangaroo” and then created backgrounds incorporating Aboriginal symbols, patterns, colors, and designs.
– The results are fantastic, and I am very proud of their work!

Writers Workshop:
– Writing humorous narratives.
– Learning about the elements involved in creating a humorous story.
– Exploring different types of humor, including sarcasm, puns, and suspense.

Thank you for your continued support!

Hi parents/caregivers,

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter and long weekend. This week we have been focusing on three assessments.

1. Writing a persuasive text

2. Operations Maths Assessment

3. Business – group assessment where students create a business plan. Including advertisements, slogan and financial plan.

Students have been successfully showing their understanding of the content learnt and have been applying their knowledge towards their work.

Today we started “Factors” in Maths where students learn about factors in multiplication and division, they also learn about prime numbers.

I have informed the students but I want to let you all know. Part of my studies of becoming a teacher include placements. I have one placement left which is a 5 week placement. Unfortunately, this placement is still be going ahead regardless of my qualification, registration and having a Year 5 class. This placement will occur in Term 2 week 1 to week 5. I ensure you and the students that I will be back in week 6. I know this is very inconvenient and I send my apologies.

Reminders.

Operations Assessment Due Tuesday Week 11.

Persuasive Assessment was Due Tuesday Week 10, please hand up if you have not

Business Presentations will occur Thursday Week 11.

I encourage students to read and revise times tables every night.

If you have any questions please email me: cassundra.pulizzi@holyfamily.catholic.edu.au

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

I hope this message finds you well, I am going to share the highlights of the past few weeks with you.

Firstly, we had a wonderful Harmony Day celebration it was heartwarming to witness our community coming together to honor diversity and foster a sense of belonging. Seeing our students in their cultural attire and vibrant orange clothing was lovely.

In our religious studies, we collaborated with our reception buddies to commemorate Palm Sunday by crafting beautiful palm leaves. The collaboration between our students was inspiring as they not only assisted each other in coloring the leaves but also engaged in various bonding activities where they played various games.

Our exploration of Lent and Ramadan in religion class was very informative. Partnering up, students completed research and preparing presentations on these significant religious events. This not only deepened their understanding but also allowed us to appreciate and respect the diverse traditions within our classroom and increase our own learning and understanding.

Turning to mathematics, we’ve been focusing on the fundamental operations. Students are completing an assessment where they show their understanding by explaining these operations, showcasing problem-solving strategies, and articulating their reasoning. I have emphasised the importance of justification when competing work to show their own understanding. I strongly encourage nightly practice of times tables.

In our Writers Workshop, students are  preparing for an upcoming assessment where they will advocate for environmental care through persuasive texts. To support their development, I have had lessons on grammar including capital letters and full stops as in previous writing tasks a significant amount of students have not been using them within their writing.

Furthermore, focusing on mindfulness among our students remains a priority. Peer interaction is encouraged through engaging activities such as games, word searches, and coloring sheets. Witnessing the positive shift towards offline engagement during these moments of mindfulness has been great to see.

Reminders:

Upcoming long weekend on Friday of Week 9 and Monday of Week 10.

I recommend you to continue supporting your child’s learning journey by practicing times tables.

Please let Luke and I know about any camp attendance.

I hope you enjoy the images provided.

Wishing you and your loved ones a restful and joyous Easter break.

Kind regards,

Cassundra Pulizzi

Hello everyone,

Over the past two weeks, in 5KF, our focus has been on building connections and trust among students, as well as with me. We’ve completed various activities to facilitate this process.

One engaging activity was an art project where students drew portraits. They drew half of their face while leaving the other half blank, which they filled with representations of their interests, hobbies, and sources of joy. This exercise provided valuable insights into their personalities and preferences.

With NAPLAN taking place during weeks 7 and 8, we dedicated time to ensuring students felt prepared. We reinforced their language skills through exercises on spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Additionally, we conducted comprehension activities to enhance listening abilities. One standout activity involved pairs where students were giving and following explicit instructions to draw, aiming for identical results.

In mathematics, I initiated an assessment of each student’s proficiency, beginning with place value. Exploring concepts of hundreds, tens, and ones, students grasped the significance of these numerical positions. To reinforce learning, we’ve implemented daily challenges where students represent and expand three-digit numbers using colourful wooden sticks. Games incorporating times tables have further strengthened their math skills, and we’ve introduced alternative strategies like the distributive method for multiplication. Our current focus is on division, with an emphasis on the halving method.

As I continue my journey as the classroom teacher, I’m excited about the progress we’ve made and eager for more enriching experiences ahead.

Just a few reminders:

  • Thursday: World Down Syndrome Day – Students can wear crazy, colorful, or mismatched socks.
  • Friday: Harmony Day Cultural Dress – Students are encouraged to wear cultural attire, orange, or their school uniform.
  • Special canteen menu: Butter Chicken or Chickpea Curry with rice and orange jelly for $6.50.

Kind regards,

Cassundra Pulizzi

NAPLAN

Hi Parents and caregivers,

To ensure we have a successful NA PLAN for the remainder of the week and next week could I please ask you to remind children to bring headphones. The use of headphones throughout the NAPLAN test is significantly important.

Furthermore, to remind children to charge laptops. The NAPLAN tests are completed on laptops and its for your child’s benefit that laptops are fully charged and ready on the day.

Thank you for your teamwork and co-operation.

Kind regards,

Miss Pulizzi
