Holy Family Preschool reflection #Term 4#Week 3-2024

Niina Marni preschool families and children and welcome to our weekly blog. What a festive week this has been!

Learning Intention:To nurture each child’s and educators identity through connecting with and learning about their culture and community.

Why : Being part of a community has many benefits for a child. It can create that sense of belonging, strengthen their sense of identity and through positive relationships with other people in the community.

This week, we celebrated Diwali which is a major festival celebrated in India. It signifies the victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and the triumph of light over darkness. The festival is celebrated for five consecutive days. Children prepared traditional Indian food items with the help of the educators. Everyday there were experiences such as  decorating paper plate diya, making rangoli, decorating our premises , and wearing traditional Indian attires.

Children listen to the stories about the event, watched videos

Children were excited to make coconut laddu (coconut balls), an Indian traditional food with the help of their educator!

Hena painting was another experience loved by all! Children choose the designs which ranged from traditional flower patterns to Spiderman, star and smileyface!

Literacy Intentions (our hopes for their learning)

  • Reading picture books regularly. Children will enjoy a joyful connection to picture books.
  • Continue using mark-making tools, such as crayons, textas, pencils, paint, chalk, sand (as they create texts during this process).
  • Children will build symbolic functioning, sharing something about the marks they have created.

Numeracy

Our preschoolers like to count, add shapes , talk about sizes. They participate in mathematical thinking and use mathematical concepts to organise, and communicate ideas about the world around them.

Learning Intention :Sacred symbols

Sacred symbols are special and important.

Why :Doctrinal Insights from the Catholic Tradition that support this Enduring Understanding include:

  • Sacred symbols remind us that God is close to us, and with us.
  • In my Catholic learning environment, I can see many sacred symbols.
    • Candle flames remind us that God is with us.
    • The Bible reminds us of God’s love for us through special stories.
    • The Cross reminds us of Jesus.
    • Water is used for special blessings
  • Sacred symbols are used in my school/ELC and in church celebrations, prayer and liturgy. (CCC1145)
  • Other faith traditions also have sacred symbols.
