Holy Family Catholic School Early Learning Blog- (LDC- 3 years) Term 2- Week 2 /2025

Nina Marni beautiful little learners and their wonderful families. Welcome to our weekly blog.

Learning Intention: 1

To support each child to deepen their emergent number and counting skills, aligning with their individual developmental stage, interest and dispositions.

Why?
Children construct mathematics from birth through a combination of cognitive development and interaction with their environment.

Learning to count, identify numbers, and compare and manipulate quantities are key early numeracy skills which can be fostered through play experiences.

Patterns are an important foundation for learning number counting.

This week children started their learning week with constructive number counting. The construction learning station provided a wonderful opportunity for children to express their thoughts ideas on their, work in progress products whilst having open ended conversations with their teachers identifying numbers and exercising their counting skills.

The outdoor and indoor learning spaces have been some special moments where the children have expressed their counting skills whilst engaged in play with their peers.

Children have been exploring their cognitive and fine motor coordination whilst connecting all of their amazing learnings to their numeric skills. Colour sorting with a variety of their favourite colourful little teddies have been some precious moments that the children enjoyed play based counting and sorting.

Number counting gets a little bit more interesting as the week progresses where children have requested we incorporate a game called the dinosaur counting with the use of some man made number counters. Lots of concentration, effort and thought was embedded into this little curious and exciting game.

Number counting is extended further where the children were able to utilise their cutting skills and match the cuttings with numbers , identifying and naming each of the numerics.

Learning Intention 2:

Sacred symbols are special and important. Why?

Doctrinal Insights from the Catholic Tradition that support this Enduring Understanding include:Sacred symbols remind us that God is close to us, and with us.In my Catholic learning environment, I can see many sacred symbols.Candle flames remind us that God is with us.The Bible reminds us of God’s love for us through special stories. The Cross reminds us of Jesus.Water is used for special blessingsSacred symbols are used in my school/ELC and in church celebrations, prayer and liturgy. (CCC1145)Other faith traditions also have sacred symbols

The Sign of the Cross is a prayer to God.Doctrinal and Content Elaborations:

Doctrinal Insights from the Catholic Tradition that support this Enduring Understanding include:The Sign of the Cross is a prayer with actions and words. The words remind us that God is called Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The actions represent the symbol of the Cross, and that prayer involves our head, heart and body.

This week children engaged in prayer whilst posing an open ended question as to “Who is baby Jesus? , (IP) “We can’t see Baby Jesus”. (MS) A story book with colourful pictures were read to the children. The name of the story was ” George looks for god”, Whilst the story was read the children’s curiosity began to blossom and the questions and wonders began to spill.

Our prayers for our own families and peers have been continuing with the cross being our sacred symbol, whilst the children ponder on this thought about ” who is baby Jesus” ?.

Community visits around the Holy Family Catholic School this week have been engaging for the children , with lots of curiosities , wonders, social engagements and interactive conversations.

This week as the weather began to get a bit wet , with some much awaited rain , our outdoor space was enlightened with some water puddles that needed investigating and exploring. Out came some gum boots and little bare feet indulging in lots of splashing. Our little learners were delighted to experience this wonderful and joyous moment of exploring their senses. (this relates to our Philosophy – We provide an all weather program where children are provided with endless possibilities and opportunities – messy play)

A very happy Birthday to Olivia who turned 4 years this week. All our little learners celibrated Olivia with a delicious cake made by our chef Angela.

Mother’s day crafts have been continuing this week with some beautiful creations crafted by our little learners with lots of help from their teachers. A very happy and blessed Mother’s Day to all the beautiful and amazing mothers in our wonderful learning community.

Some specks of gold for this week
