Holy Family Catholic School Early Learning Blog- (LDC- 3 years) Term 2- Week 5 /2025

Nina Marni beautiful little learners and their wonderful families. Welcome to our weekly blog.

This week is National Reconciliation Week. “Bridging now to next” This week we have the opportunity as Australians to learn about our shared histories , culture’s, and achievements.

This week the children have been exploring the Aboriginal culture , language (symbolic words) of the Kaurna people and learning to write new signs and symbols (in the sand). Hand prints have been imprinted by our little people in acknowledging culture and inclusivity.

Learning Intention: 1

To provide opportunities for children to make new discoveries about and deepen their appreciation of all Jesus’s living beings extending on insects and bugs, (lady bugs, rain moths, beetles and butterfly’s)- the existing enquiry will continue for the next fortnight due to children’s continuing interests, (observed by teachers assessed and evaluated).

Why?
As part of the Catholic Ethos, we aim to support children to develop a love, respect and appreciation for all of Jesus’s creations. Living beings also provide a valuable outlet for children to enquire about and research. (enquiry and research will continue for the next fortnight with open-ended conversation and questions and answers on child centred interests of insects (the large insect family)

Helping children discover the wonder of all God’s creatures—even the tiniest bugs and insects—and learn to love and care for them.”

“Throughout this week’s learning intention we aim to provide opportunities for children to make meaningful discoveries about the natural world and deepen their appreciation for all of Jesus’s living beings. From the largest animals to the tiniest insects and bugs, each creature reflects God’s creativity and care. Through hands-on experiences, guided exploration, and thoughtful discussions, we help children recognise the value and purpose of every living being. By learning to notice and respect even the smallest of creatures, children grow in wonder, compassion, and a deeper understanding of God’s love for all creation.”

This week children engaged in a beautiful crafting experience of creating and crafting their own little lady bugs. paints , paintbrushes ,and crafting paper were some resources used by the children to create their vision of a lady bug.

The children enquired on ” how many legs does a lady bug have>? Does the lady bug have teeth? Does the lady bug have a nose?

“A bug motel ” was designed and created catering to the interests of the children where they spoke and queried ” where do the bugs live? Do they have a home? Sustainable and man made resource were sourced for creation.

Learning Intention 2:

Doctrinal Insights from the Catholic Tradition that support this Enduring Understanding include:Sacred symbols remind us that God is close to us, and with us.In my Catholic learning environment, I can see many sacred symbols.Candle flames remind us that God is with us.The Bible reminds us of God’s love for us through special stories. The Cross reminds us of Jesus.Water is used for special blessingsSacred symbols are used in my school/ELC and in church celebrations, prayer and liturgy. (CCC1145)Other faith traditions also have sacred symbols

The Sign of the Cross is a prayer to God.Doctrinal and Content Elaborations:Doctrinal Insights from the Catholic Tradition that support this Enduring Understanding include:The Sign of the Cross is a prayer with actions and words. The words remind us that God is called Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The actions represent the symbol of the Cross, and that prayer involves our head, heart and body.

Morning prayer in LDC 3 learning space has been inviting with lots of wonder in our prayers. The story about where George looks for Jesus has been a very interesting and a most sought out reader during this week. Children engaged in the story with open ended questions , thoughts and enquiry of where is Jesus? has Jesus got a home ? and Jesus is around us.

The sacred symbols have been utilised to begin and end our prayer with thoughts to ponder during the coming weeks, on “looking for Jesus”

Community walks where curiosities and wonders arise. Building agency through physical movement and balance.
