Long Day Care Learning Reflection, Term 1, Week 3

Happy Week 3 !

Dear families, welcome to our weekly learning reflection.

Learning Intention 1:

To support children become strong in their social and emotional wellbeing.

It is an absolute blessing to observe our young learners getting comfortable and confident in Holy Family Early Learning Precinct.

Children demonstrate trust and confidence when they develop a sense of belonging, attachments and build relationships. By week three, learners are showing their initiatives to accept new challenges, make discoveries and celebrate the accomplishments they individually achieved as well of their peers.

Throughout this week, we focused on knowing each other better, such as interests, likings, preferred experiences and activities of the children. They participated and contributed with genuine enthusiasm. During group time, we talked about what they like to do at HFEY. Children patiently listened to others with respect when it was not their turn yet to talk about themselves. They chose the colour to write down their favourite activities and experiences, which made them feel the importance of their interest.

Children played different types of games happily with their educators and with their peers. They shared the play space, toys, tools and resources with others. And so, they are learning to take turns and be aware about personal space.

Building/construction experiences are one of the most favourites in our Long Day Care room. Children like to use a range of materials and resources to use in their creations. It includes different sized LEGO blocks, recycled items, cardboard boxes, pop sticks, masking tapes, glue sticks, pipe cleaners, pompoms, sequins and many more.

These experiences support children to develop their motor skills, hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, social communications and learning dispositions, such as creativity and imagination.

Picasso famously said: “Every child is an artist…”

Our young artists love to be engaged in a range of art & craft activities everyday. Such include drawing, painting, creating music and so many. They love to experiment with different materials and resources to work on their projects. It is wonderful to see their joy when their work is accomplished and ready to share.

Different types of art & craft experiences enable children to play with materials, to express their ideas and their emotions.

We talked about kindness, gentle hands, and sharing during such activities. They eagerly explained their art work, drawings or painting.

Children loved to play music with different musical instruments. They realised that different instrument produces different sounds, they excitedly shared their findings with each other.

Learning Intention 2

To support and encourage children to take increasing responsibility for their own health and physical wellbeing.  Promote continuity of children’s personal health and hygiene by sharing ownerships of routines and schedules with children.

By the end of this week, learners seemed to be well settled and familiar with everyday routine. They understand the importance of washing their hands before meal times and after using the washroom. They are learning to apply sunscreen properly, while avoiding their eyes.  They also know  the spaces for different experiences,  materials and resources.

Children loved the play equipment at the yard. Sometimes, they rearranged the pieces to experiment and find new ways to play.

Ajak looked very excited to jump off the play equipment. He said, ” Look, look. I can jump!” Gabby climbed up all the way and decided to enjoy there for a while.

With time, children are developing more confidence, they observe everything safely in their environment. During free play time, they browse and choose the activities to their likings. They survey indoors, outdoors and the preschool room to find all the learning experiences set up for them in their environments. They are comfortable and confident to join in any of the activities they would like to do.

During this hot weather, children loved water play. They enjoyed the sensory experiences, pouring water and feeling different items and their textures in the water. They brought toys and utensils from home corner by themselves to add to their play.

Sensory play was an everyday activity, which the children looked forward to in our long day care room. Their experiences included items of different textures, smells, shapes and sizes . They often were engaged with Playdoh, shaping them with natural items, shape cutters and other tools.
