Long Day Care Learning Reflection, Term 2, Week 3, 2023

Dear families, welcome to week 3 learning reflection!

Learning Intention 1: To support each child to recognise and communicate their bodily needs (for example, thirst, hunger, rest, comfort, physical activity).

Educators have noticed and reflected on children’s discomfort and their own ways of expressing their needs. So, this week’s focus was to support children in building a strong sense of wellbeing. A strong sense of wellbeing provides children with confidence and optimism which maximise their learning potential. They are learning to be aware about their own physical needs and how to communicate with their educators.

Teachers and some educators undertook training in Berry Street. To follow Berry Street Model, we have implemented several strategies to support our learners in more efficient ways. Such as identifying their mental state, supporting them in self-regulation, to be present, centred, and ready to learn.

Holy Family Early Years provides opportunities and support for children to engage in meaningful learning relationships. They are curious and enthusiastic participants in their learning. Morning circle time gives us the best opportunity talk and discuss about the focused activities of the day.

Children showed interest in playing with cars. They were excited to see the road tracks and small wooden cars to play with.

Construction/building with a range of materials provide experiences that encourage children to use their creativity, imagination, manipulate objects and experiment with cause and effect, trial and error.

Gorgeous Autumn leaves, flowers and many more natural materials provide open ended art and crafts, and sensory experiences.

Role play, dramatic play support children to explore their environment, they also use play to investigate, imagine and explore ideas. They engage with and co-construct learning with others , make connections between experiences, concepts and processes. They also reflect on their own needs and likings.

Learning Intention 2:

Demonstrate spatial awareness and orient themselves moving around and through their environments confidently and safely.

Going to the big play ground is the most favourite experience of all children in our Long Day Care Room. The activity  supports them in developing their gross and fine motor movement and balance to achieve increasingly complex patterns of activity. They learn to keep space between them while playing on the same equipment. They also learn to take responsibility for their own health and physical wellbeing. The playground provides opportunities for children to show enthusiasm for participating in physical play and negotiate play spaces to ensure the safety and wellbeing of themselves and others.

“Our focus on Ecology comes from our Faith. As a catholic community, we feel connected to God’s creation. We are all called to protect our natural environment…” Going to MUDLA and exploring the environment provides opportunities for sharing information about the natural environment, developing respect and care for all natural beings.

Extension of Learning:

  • Continue supporting children to communicate their bodily needs (for example, thirst, hunger, rest, comfort, physical activity).
  • Use a range of natural and processed materials in open ended art and crafts experiences, sensory experiences and mark making.
  • Reading books about everyday activities and co-constructing story tables.
  • Collaborative ball play games for example, football, throw/catch, knock down a tower of reels.
