Week 10 Term 2 2023 – LDCB Weekly Blog

Nina Marni Long Day Care B children and families. Welcome to our week 10 learning reflection and last weekly blog for term 2 and semester 1 of this school year.

Learning Intention 1: To nurture each child’s wellbeing as they begin their progression to Pre School.

Being the last week of term 2 we continued with our intention of helping some of our friends with the transition to pre school. This term has gone by so fast and we have no idea on where the time is gone, but we are so excited for term 3 and for some of our friends to start their next big adventure.

Change can be really scary for some, even adults and although we are familiar with the environment and teachers in Pre School – this is still a big change for our friends starting. As a team we knew that we needed to support the children through this change with strategies and guidance we made for them. So our friends felt safe, heard, supported and comfortable. In hopes that they will have a smooth transition to PS.

Why:

  • As children approach transitions or a change in life some may be experiencing certain feelings such as fear, uncertainty and nervousness.
  • Being aware of children’s developmental milestones, particularly emotional and social development. This helps us as educators to understand what to expect at different stages of each child lives.
  • Having successful transitions helps improve our children’s educational and social outcomes.

We know this isn’t goodbye, but we are going to miss our friends moving up to PS and know that they will truly blossom.

Learning Intention 2: To develop an understanding and appreciation of Aboriginals ways of being and doing in acknowledgement of NAIDOC week.

This week we celebrated NAIDOC week , children were provided and engaged with serval intentional and spontaneous provocations and experiences to develop an understanding of the Aboriginal culture and communities.

With natural resources, sensory provocations, group times and community walks. It was amazing to see children really engaging and taking interest to learn about this wonderful culture. We recognise the importance of this learning and the acknowledgement of the first owners of our land. Using this to establish and embed in our routine daily.

Provocations highlights for NAIDOC week:

  • Stories written by Aboriginal authors
  • Natural resource symbol work
  • Gum leaf play dough
  • Puppet dream time stories
  • Necklace making
  • Dream time stones
  •  Painting
  • Book making work with aboriginal symbols
  • Group times about flags, maps and communities

Spotlight Term 2:  To support children in choosing themes for their books and using writing language.

Finishing off our spotlight for term 2 in book making. The children have loved reading satires together and with their teachers this week. Always interested in knowing who has written the story and what the story is about.

Something we have been working on from this spotlight and will continue to work for the start of three three is creating different themes for our stories and boarding our imagination. Doing this with a variety of different materials and resources on offer for children to explore and create from. Another direction we are hopeful to take place for a spotlight next term is publishing. We would love children to be confident in their writing skills to be able to share their stories with others for group times.

We are immensely proud of our children and how far they have come with their journeys of book making. We cannot wait to see what our little authors do next!

  • Children will investigate a range of picture story books ( Aboriginal books we a major aspect of this following NAIDOC week).
  • Discussion around their own stories
  • Oral story telling.
  • Children will learn to create artwork using favourite memories and favourite parts of a stories we have read together.
  • Book making station is always on offer.
  • Regular reading and discussions around the authors and their stories.
  • Creating stories in small group experiences

Trajectories:

  • Diving deeper into inquiry projects next term
  • Begin community walks and discussions with the children commencing PS in term 3
  • Setting environment up for term 3
  • Spotlight ideas for term 3
