Long Day Care B Weekly Blog Term 3 Week 1

Nina Marni Long Day Care B Families, welcome to our first blog for term 3 of LDC B. We have had such a wonderful and busy start to the term and have felt so blessed to connected and shared very special moments with all the children both new children and existing.

We would like to send a big warm welcome to our new friends Winnie, Adriana and Selena. We are so happy to have you apart of the LDC B community.

Learning Intention 1: To encourage children to consider the safety and wellbeing of themselves and those around them, creating an inclusive and respectful learning environment.

 Why:

  • Children who have opportunities to effectively assess and manage risk at an early age will be better equipped to deal with risk as an adult. It also creates a learning environment where children can identify their limits, seek help when need, and supports children to explore, experiment and cope with the unexpected
  • To support children’s understanding of God’s love and how we can embrace his teachings.
  • Inclusive education recognises the right of every child and young person – without exception – to be included in general education settings. It involves adapting the environment and teaching approaches to ensure genuine and valued full participation of all children and young people.
  • Recently educators have noticed many children seeking additional physical challenges within our environment. We aim to ensure that children are taking ownership over their safety as well ensure that that all educators are using consistent strategies.
  • There are many benefits to children participating in decision making, such as learning to consider the needs of others, developing problem-solving skills and it can increase their commitment to making decisions work.

ILP’S:  All

This week we set this intention to be our number one focus. So as a team we could work with the children about learning the importance of safety within our room, our other learning environments and the wellbeing of others and ourselves.

We started of by doing group times and having group discussions on safety and what we think that means.

From this we also discussed what are green choices and what are red choices. With this strategy in mind. We have used this as a visual for children to understand the importance on what these choices are green and what these choices are red.

During group times this week children had discussions amongst each other and with their teachers about what they think are red choices and what are green choices. We then as a community came up with LDC B guidelines. That we have displayed in our quiet space for it to be always on access.

While creating these guidelines children voiced that during moments of big emotions children liked having some quiet time. We have created a space with resources for children to use to help calm down and regulate their emotions As well as having a space where children can sit and discuss with educators about how they are feeling and why they may be feeling these emotions.

During these conversations and moments educators discuss and advocate for children that it is okay and completely normal to feel these emotions and that we can see them. It is important that when children are feeling this way that we respect and support them as much as possible.

Below is a link of information and guidelines that we have used and read to become more aware of how we can support and implant this topic in our practice.

Stemming from this topic we have may point that for an intention moving forward we would like to introduce ‘bucket filling ‘. This is a strategy that we have used in the past in our pre school room. The concept of bucket filling is a ready good example for children in supporting them with big emotions and the choices that children make. This will be set as an intention in the next few weeks.
