Preschool Learning Reflection, Term 1, week 3

Shalom (hello) Preschool Families,

Welcome to our week 3 learning reflection.

Learning Intention 2:

To extend on children’s interest in living beings by designing a new tank for Strawberry the turtle and nurturing children’s love and care for God’s creatures.

Throughout the week, our innovative preschoolers continued to amaze us with their creative and detailed designs for Strawberry’s tank. On Wednesday we were thrilled to present our designs to Mr McCarthy and learn more about our beloved turtle.

Some of the wonderings that were posed to Mr McCarthy that arose through the design process-

  1. Should we get a friend for Strawberry?
  2. Does Strawberry need a light?
  3. How often should we get Strawberry out of her tank?
  4. Can we give her treats?

Some new discoveries

  • Turtles have webbed feet to help them swim
  • light helps harden a turtles shell
  • turtles love getting some fresh air and sunshine
  • turtles can only live with other turtles that are the same size

The next steps

With all of our designs in plan, Mr McCarthy will hopefully be back next week with a new home for Strawberry

BookMaking

We were so fortunate for have some more mentoring from Lisa Burman this week and together we developed a ‘spotlight’ for the term. We are hopeful that you may begin to hear your child using language such as ‘illustrations’, ‘title’ and ”author’ and actively seeking to make meaning of books that you read at home.

Learning Intention 1:

To challenge children’s construction skills using loose parts and STEM experiences by extending on their emergent interest and learning about cause and effect, comparison and problem-solving skills.

Through the numeracy provocation ‘Which item is the heaviest?’ our curious learners carried out their own testing and hypothesising. As they conducted their investigations, educators and teachers extended their learning, using topic related language.

The hot weather provided the perfect opportunity to carry out some engaging STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Architecture, Mathematics) learning.

Water play offered valuable numeracy processing opoortuies to measure.

Our construction zone saw many collaborative projects taking place, where children worked together to problem-solve, design, evaluate and and communicate to reach their desired outcomes.

Trajectories:

  • Following the evident interest of our learners we have lead down a new path for our inquiry project this term. We look forward to making new discoveries together about the habitats of living beings.
  • Science experiments and sensory experiences, to inititiate comparative language
  • Tools and resources for construction projects
  • using a variety of picture and information books at mentor texts

  1. Harry has already been talking about the title and author of his books having to be on the front of the book. He’s loving book making at home now
