Week 4 in RFL

Welcome to Week 4!

In English:

– we focused on the letters C and D, paying special attention to the sound /d/ at the beginning and end of words.

– worked on distinguishing the middle sounds /a/, /o/, and /i/ in words, such as “cat,” “hot,” and “sit.”

– introduced and practiced some tricky words: I, my, the, is, a.

– Book making: informational text – contents page, page number, diagram

In Math:

we’ve been diving into addition and solving simple problems. The children explored how to combine numbers to find a total and practiced writing number sentences (e.g., 2 + 3 = 5)

In Arts, we explored Aboriginal dot painting.

In HASS,we explored a beautiful Dreamtime story about the Rainbow Serpent, a significant part of Aboriginal culture.

In Health, we focused on personal boundaries, teaching the children about respecting their own space and the space of others.

On Friday, we came together as a school community to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary with a special Mass.

TRY AT HOME:

– when you see the tricky words in a story, pause and ask your child to read it aloud. This makes reading fun and helps them recognise these words in context.

– Choose a favorite bedtime story and see how many tricky words (I, my, the, is, a) your child can spot.

– talk about words with middle sounds of /a/, /o/, and /i/.

– talk about words start with ‘c’ and words start or end with ‘d’

 

Week 3 in RFL

Welcome to week 3!

In English we focused on the letters R and O and their corresponding sounds. Our book-making sessions continued with a deeper dive into diagrams. This week, we introduced different types of diagrams.

In Maths, we kept building on our skills with counting up to 100. We also introduced addition with single and double-digit numbers, using hands-on activities and games.

In Health, we discussed the important topic of safe and unsafe secrets.

In Science, we explored objects and their materials.

In HASS and Arts, we continued our focus on Aboriginal art, diving deeper into its cultural significance. We tried dot painting and storytelling.

In Religion, we celebrated Mary MacKillop’s Feast Day, honoring Australia’s first saint.

 

 

Try at Home: Help your child practice reading words with the letters R and O, such as map, rap, rim, ram, fit, top, rot, tip, it, at, if and am. Encourage them to sound out each word and use them in simple sentences for extra practice!

Week 2 in RFL

Welcome to week 2!

In English, we dove into the world of the letter i and letter f, we also focused on reading words. in our book-making session was all about diagrams. We introduced the concept of using simple diagrams to represent ideas visually.

In Maths, we took a big step forward by introducing double-digit numbers. The children explored how to read, write, and understand numbers like 10, 20, and beyond. We also practiced counting up to 100.

In religion, we learned about Noah’s Ark.

In health, we learned about hygiene and self-care.

In science, we focused on objects and their purposes.

Week 1 in RFL

Welcome to week 1 in Term 3!

In English, we focused on the letters and sounds p and i, learning how they come together to form words. We also explored informational texts, discovering how they provide facts and knowledge in an exciting way.

In Maths, we worked on ordering numbers from 1 to 20, strengthening our understanding of number sequences and patterns through hands-on activities.

In religion, we focused on the creation story.

In health, we learned about body parts and their functions.

– Encourage your child to share words that start with the sounds p and i.

– Practice writing and reading words like Sam, mat, map, sit, tap, pat, at, am, it, pit, and tip together.

Week 10 in RFL

Welcome to week 10!

In English, we dove deep into the letter A and its sound. The children practiced blending three sounds together to form words, like /m/a/t/ to make mat.

Across other subjects, we focused on wrapping up the term. The students completed their final assessments and enjoyed some fun activities with our buddy class.

Try at home:

Encourage your child to keep practicing their phonics skills! Try blending three sounds together to make words at home, like /l/e/g/ to form leg.

Week 9 in RFL

Welcome to Week 9!

In English,we dove into the letters M, S, and T, practicing their sounds and shapes. The kids also worked on stretching words into three sounds, like breaking “cat” into /c/ /a/ /t/. In book making, We studied Mo Willems’ books, noticing how he crafts engaging beginnings and endings. The children tried writing their own words to create mini-stories, inspired by his style.

In maths, our focus was on duration—understanding how long things take.

In health, we discussed rules in games and why they matter for fair play.

In science, we explore push and pull forces.

In religion, we learned about different types of prayers, focusing on thanksgiving.

Try at Home:

Help your child practice stretching words into three sounds! Pick simple words like log, moon, fish, or house, and say each sound slowly (/l/ /o/ /g/). Make it a game to see how many words they can stretch!

 

 

Week 8 in RFL

Welcome to week 8!

In English, we focused on the letters s and m, and in bookmaking, we practiced adding and sounding out words in our stories.

In Maths, we explored measurement by comparing light and heavy objects.

 

In HASS, we learned how to trace our steps and give directions step by step.

In Art, we were very proud to share our dioramas and outdoor area plans with the principal.

We also took part in Mission Week, which included a special Mass, visiting the Blessed Carlo Acutis exhibition, and enjoying Mission Day activities with the school community.

Welcome to week 7!

In English, We focus on the letter and sound of ‘m’. In book making, we explored the use of headings and label.

In Maths, we explored the concept of capacity.

In science, we investigated four types of movements – bounce, roll, slide and spin

In Religion, we learned about symbols of prayer.

In Health, we focused on building friendships.

In HASS, we attempted to draw maps of the school oval.

Term 2 week 6 RFL

Dear RFL families,

Welcome to Week 6!

In English, we explored onset and rime, helping students to break down and build words in fun and interactive ways.

In bookmaking sessions, the children got creative by adding speech and thinking bubbles to their stories – giving their characters voices and thoughts

Our story book lesson focused on the beautiful picture book Grandpa and Thomas

In Maths, we explored measurement, using language like shorter, taller, longer and shorter to compare and describe objects around us.

 

In Religion, we talked about the different places and times we can pray to God.

In HASS, we looked at birds-eye views and we tried drawing our rooms from above.

In Arts and Design, we brought our outdoor space to life by creating dioramas of our dream outdoor area.

In Science, we investigated what can spin.

 

TRY AT HOME:

onset and rime – say the beginning sound (onset) like “c-” and add it to the rime “-at” to make “cat”.

describe everyday objects — for example, which spoon is longer, which book is taller, or which toy is shorter.
