We have been celebrating nothing but Christmas! Even though our Carol’s Night was cancelled, this didn’t stop the children performing their carols on stage. All families will receive a link to the performances by the end of the week.
We have been celebrating nothing but Christmas! Even though our Carol’s Night was cancelled, this didn’t stop the children performing their carols on stage. All families will receive a link to the performances by the end of the week.
Welcome to Week 7. We have been busily practising our songs for Carol’s night. The children are excited to showcase their talents next week. We have made beautiful Christmas trees and Advent wreaths this week. The four candles of the Advent wreath specifically symbolise the Christian concepts of hope, peace, joy and love, with these candles being lit subsequently throughout each week of the Advent season.
In Numeracy, we used the ‘Bee bots’ to think critically and solve problems. The children planned and experimented with different commands to achieve a desired outcomes ie. left, right, forward and backwards, fostering their problem-solving and decision-making abilities. They then used the Bee bots to travel along their School maps which they created last week.
What a wonderful week we’ve had! The children thoroughly enjoyed constructing their playgrounds using recycled materials. They really thought about the position of each feature and carefully chose materials accordingly.
We also welcomed Trent Hill to our class, an Indigenous storyteller, educator and guide. Trent showcased all the different Aboriginal artefacts, gave a general introduction about Aboriginal culture and shared his knowledge around seasonal movements, the roles of men, women and children and the diversity of Aboriginal people.
Welcome to Week 5.
In Numeracy, the children have enjoyed exploring the concept of duration and sequencing events. After brainstorming what they do each day of the week, they then drew pictures and added words under each day of the week.
In bookmaking, the children wrote thank you cards to someone as a beautiful gesture to just say ‘thanks’. They placed them carefully around our Christmas tree before sharing them with their friends. Term 4 is always such an exciting term to celebrate how far the children have developed with their writing – so exciting!
It is hard to believe that we are in Week 4!
The children enjoyed the many hands-on learning experiences this week. In Technology, they were given a brief of designing a free-standing bridge that would hold at least 7 blocks. The children used their prior knowledge of making cylinders and thought about the spacing in between the cylinders and the height and length of the walk bridge. It was great to see great perseverance and attention to detail.
We took literacy outside with the children using chalk to write long and short ‘oo’ words.
In Numeracy, we explored capacity in the sandpit. We used mathematical language of full, half full and empty when experimenting with our containers.
Looking forward to more learning next week.
This week in Numeracy we took the lesson outside! We have been exploring MASS and the children needed to collaboratively order wooden logs from the lightest to the heaviest. They used the process of hefting whereby they needed to carry and feel logs together to determine which one was heavier.
We visited the Design Lab and participated in various Diwali experiences. Diwali is also known as the Festival of Lights. In the very old Indian language, Sanskrit, Diwali (or Deepavali) means ‘row of lamps’. People light lamps at Diwali to show that light is more powerful than darkness, and good is more powerful than evil. Diwali also celebrates new beginnings.
We also participated in the All Saints Liturgy in the Hall. All Saints’ Day is a Christian festival which falls each year on 1st November. It is a time when Christians remember all the saints who have died and the wonderful things they have done.
This week was all about measuring objects from the shortest to the longest. We went on a walk to compare the different sizes of buildings and structures around the school.
In technology, we also explored different brick structures ie. staggered joints versus single file columns and assisted Humpty Dumpty with building his wall.
Welcome back to Term 4!
The children have hit the ground running, ready to make the most of the final stretch of the school year. From reconnecting with friends to diving into new learning opportunities, it’s shaping up to be a fulfilling term ahead.
In Literacy, our two new digraphs learnt this week include, ‘ai’ and ‘ay’ making the sound /a/. We concentrated on forming words with these sounds, blending and segmenting words together with writing sentences. Information around this learning has been placed in your take home folders.
In Numeracy, we have been focusing on measurement; comparing objects based on their different attributes and using topic specific language when comparing the length of various objects ie. short, shorter, long and longer. The children enjoyed collecting natural materials from the outside environment and sorting theming according to their size.
In Religion, our focus is on our daily prayer, which includes a welcome prayer, what we are grateful for, learning the Lord’s prayer and ending with a religious song. We have also been discussing God’s gift for all to love and enjoy – our beautiful world! The children made ground collages with the natural materials they collected for Numeracy.
In Technology, we started to look at what a structure is, in particular, a free-standing structure. The children had a go at making their own free-standing cylinder paper pole.
In The Arts, we looked at animal parts relating to Aboriginal traditional dance. The children chose an animal, made a mask for it and moved around like that animal for the group to guess what they were.
In HASS, we are continuing our discussions around the importance of Country and in Science, we are observing and questioning the natural world.
In Health, we looked at strategies for keeping safe ie. remembering our name, address and telephone number.
This week was all about the ‘Colour Run’. The children had a ball!
I do hope you all enjoy your holiday break. See you all in Term 4.
What a fun week we’ve had!
In Numeracy, we revisited our knowledge around 2D shapes by identifying the different attributes of each shape, sorting shapes according to how many sides and vertices they have, going on a ‘shape walk’ and identifying shapes in buildings and structures and making pictures using different shapes.
In bookmaking, we explored the notion of adding labels to our diagrams. We practised doing this with a picture of a bee. The children drew a bee and then needed to label the different parts. They then used this knowledge to apply it to their own information books.
