Celebrating Reading

We are so proud of the children and the progress they have made with their independent reading so far this year. Keep reading every night and you will flourish.

Word Study this week:

Handwriting – ‘ss’ and ‘zz’

ss – words – hiss, miss, Tess, pass

zz- words – buzz, Jazz, fizz

The children also copied short sentences to extend their learning  about high frequency words and sentence structure. The children then drew pictures which demonstrated their comprehension of the text.

Book Making

Author study – Pamela Allen

This week we have been taking about characters in Pamela Allen books.

We made a long list of characters she uses, they include:

Dragon, boy, bear, king, queen, families, ducks, cow, monster, girl, baby, policeman, elephant, walrus, grandma

We also talked about how Pamela Allen draws her characters the same all the way through her books. – Like the little boy in the story  – Is your grandmother a goanna?  The boys has green shorts and a blue top, he has a back pack and a hat on throughout the book.

Technology

You have been invited to a costume birthday party – What costume are you going to wear?

Task – design and label your costume.

 

Numeracy

This week we played location and direction games on targeting math. We also drew a map of our bedrooms and of the zoo.

Rhyme Time

Week 7 – Term 2

What a busy week in RPN and RMR, our big assembly week!

Reading Achievements-

Reading-The students have been flourishing with their reading skills and enjoy reading each morning:

Word Study- This week’s sounds are ff and ll. We came up words that contain the ff sounds and ll sounds, for example fluff and well. We then continued to practise writing some sentences.

Assembly Practice (Wednesday)- Getting ready for the big performance during the week.

Play investigations-

Mathematics-This week, we starting learning about position and direction. After reading the story, Where is the Green Sheep?, the students had to draw the green sheep in different positions; on something, in something, under something and next to something.

The Assembly- The students did a fantastic job with the assembly. They showed great collaboration and bravery, and they got so much positive feedback about how well they performed. Thank you to all the families who attended. We hope you enjoyed it! 🙂

Week 6 – Term 2

Highlights of Learning during Week 6

Reading

Starting our day with conversation and connecting with our friends during ‘Come Read with Me’. Thank you for reading with your child at home as often as you can. As we say to the children –  you get better at reading by reading 🙂

 

Word Study

This week we learnt about ‘at’ words and ‘ng’ words. The children then copied simple sentences using some new high frequency words. The children then drew a picture to reflect their comprehension of the sentence.

 

Play Investigations – following our interests and ideas with focus and enthusiasm.

 

Numeracy

During numeracy this week we have been learning about data – how to collect and record information.

Sorry we were so busy collecting data we forgot to take photos.

Maybe ask your child about how we collected date by rolling the dice – And they can show you their learning at home.

 

Technology

This week we talked about different clothes and how they have changed over the years. The children then designed their own t-shirt using colours, pictures and patterns they liked.

Book Making

This week we have been writing books together during interactive writing sessions during our mini lessons. These lesson explore how to construct a sentence and ways we can add words to our books.

We have begun our author study this week. We are learning about Pamela Allen. She is a popular Author who was born in New Zealand. Over the next few weeks we will read Pamela’s books and look and learn about how she has constructed the books she has written.

Rhyme Time

We learnt about ‘ed’ words and enjoyed the rhyme 5 little monkeys jumping on the bed. The children recorded a visual representation of the rhyme in their math books.

Week 5 – Term 2

What a wonderful week of learning in RPN and RMR.

Reading Achievements-

Reading- During Come Read With Me time, we have continued to find specific high frequency words in our books.

 

Word Study- During word study this week, we focused on the sound blends sh and th. We are also continuing to build up our high frequency word knowledge when writing our sentences during this time.

Book making- This week,  we discussed the different sizes of characters in our books and the facial expressions of characters in our illustrations.

Mathematics- This week, learning has centered around collecting data and graphing. For this activity, the students had to graph the animals at the zoo.

Sea of Hearts- This week, we planted the hearts we made for Reconciliation Week- We made  time to plant these with our year 5/6 buddies.

Science- Science learning this week was to do with glass and its properties. We found out that glass is created by heating up sand. The students then drew some objects made from glass.

Technologies- The students made some origami fish following a video of instructions. They then glued their fish onto a piece of paper and decorated it as their fish tank.
