Week 1 – Term 3

We welcomed the students back to school for term 3, on Monday. The students, after a well deserved break, came back to school, ‘ready to learn’.

Word Study- This term, we are focusing on becoming more independent writers and encouraging the students to be brave spellers. The students will have more opportunities to create their own sentences during our word study time. We also are reinforcing the names and sounds of the letters of the alphabet.

Book Making- This week, we looked at different published books and the way that they are organsied. Some were organised by colour, some were organised by topic and others organised by lists.

Mathematics- The students used flip tiles and a 10 frame grid to make additions that equals 10. They then recorded these in their books.

 

Science- The learning this term will be centered around the weather. We had discussions about what the students already know about the weather, and they displayed their knowledge on a piece of paper.

Technologies- This term, our learning will be to do with foods. For this activity, we discussed foods that we like and foods that we don’t like. The students recorded some of these in columns.

Week 9 – Term 2

Word Study- This week’s sounds were ar and ee. After writing their sentences, the students had a go at making up their own sentence.

Book Making- We have been continuing our study on the author/illustrator Pamela Allen. We have shared many of her stories together and the students are trying to use aspects of how she makes her books in their books.

Science- This week, we continued our learning about materials and their properties. We listened to the story of the 3 Little Pigs. The students had to draw the three houses made from straw, sticks and bricks. They then had to write a property of each of the materials.

Technologies- The students had a discussion about the different uniforms that workers wear. Their task was to draw a worker with their uniform on, and they had to try and label the different clothing items they wear and the equipment that they use.

Today was Catholic Identity Day. We got together with our buddy classes to make pledges about looking after God’s world.

Week 7 – Term 2

What a busy week in RPN and RMR, our big assembly week!

Reading-The students have been flourishing with their reading skills and enjoy reading each morning:

Word Study- This week’s sounds are ff and ll. We came up words that contain the ff sounds and ll sounds, for example fluff and well. We then continued to practise writing some sentences.

Assembly Practice (Wednesday)- Getting ready for the big performance during the week.

Play investigations-

Mathematics-This week, we starting learning about position and direction. After reading the story, Where is the Green Sheep?, the students had to draw the green sheep in different positions; on something, in something, under something and next to something.

The Assembly- The students did a fantastic job with the assembly. They showed great collaboration and bravery, and they got so much positive feedback about how well they performed. Thank you to all the families who attended. We hope you enjoyed it! 🙂

Week 5 – Term 2

Reading- During Come Read With Me time, we have continued to find specific high frequency words in our books.

 

Word Study- During word study this week, we focused on the sound blends sh and th. We are also continuing to build up our high frequency word knowledge when writing our sentences during this time.

Book making- This week,  we discussed the different sizes of characters in our books and the facial expressions of characters in our illustrations.

Mathematics- This week, learning has centered around collecting data and graphing. For this activity, the students had to graph the animals at the zoo.

Sea of Hearts- This week, we planted the hearts we made for Reconciliation Week- We made  time to plant these with our year 5/6 buddies.

Science- Science learning this week was to do with glass and its properties. We found out that glass is created by heating up sand. The students then drew some objects made from glass.

Technologies- The students made some origami fish following a video of instructions. They then glued their fish onto a piece of paper and decorated it as their fish tank.

Week 3 – Term 2

Another wonderful week in RPN and RMR!

Literacy- This week, we focused on the letters Yy and Zz- The students practised writing the lowercase and uppercase letters and then wrote words containing the sounds. The students also wrote some sentences. They then illustrated the sentences.

Mathematics- This week, Numeracy Coach, Mr DePalma, ran a numeracy lesson on 3D shapes. The students had to try and make specific buildings with the shapes to see if they were able to stand on their own.

 

Health- During health lessons, we have been focusing on the topic of relationships. This week we honed in on, ‘what qualities our friends have’. After a discussion about friends, the students drew their friends and expressed a quality that they possess.

Technologies- This week for our origami work, the students made their own stretchy snakes out of paper. We will be making a lot more of these to sell on Mission Day (Friday week 5).

Week 1 – Term 2

Hello and welcome back to school for term 2. We hope everyone had a fantastic holiday and it was great to see the children come back to school, ready to learn.

Word Study- This week, the letter sounds we focused on were the letters Jj and Vv. We spoke about many different words beginning with these sounds and practised writing the letters and words beginning with the sounds. We also are starting to write more sentences this term, during our word study time. This will help the students recognise to read and write more high frequency words and to put letters together to make words. They did a wonderful job doing this for the first time this week.

Mathematics- This week for mathematics, we have been focusing on 2D shapes. For this activity, the students had to colour in the triangles, circles, squares and rectangles, a particular colour. Underneath the picture the students drew a picture of each of the shapes and recorded how many of each shape were in the picture.

 

Science- For science this term, our learning intention is that objects are made of materials that have observable properties. This week, we had an introduction to this concept. The students had to draw any object and place it under the correct heading of what it is made from.

Week 10- Term 1

Another fantastic week of learning in RPN and RMR.

Mathematics- This week, learning has centered around the topic of time. We learnt about the months of the year, days of the week and seasons of the year. On Tuesday, we listened to the story of,  ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. The students recorded the different things the caterpillar ate through on each day.

 

Science- The students have enjoyed doing their science learning in the MUDLA this term. This week, we again spoke about how plants are living things, and discussed the different fruit and vegetables the students know of. They then drew and labelled different fruits and vegetables in their books.

Technologies-Over the past three weeks, the students have been making different types of puppets. This week we made some superhero stick puppets.

Rhyme Time-

 

Today we sang the song, “1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Once I caught a Fish Alive”. We asked the students if they could think of any words that rhyme with the word bite.

This week the students did some learning around the letter Uu. They practised writing the letter and words beginning with the u sound. After they had finished this, they made their own unicorns.

Students also learnt about the letter Rr. Students created their own pictures of a robot, after they finished practising writing the letter and writing words beginning with the sound.

Bookmaking- This week during book making sessions, we spoke about the use of speech bubbles. We read the stories, ‘The Duckling Gets a Cookie!?’ and “Can I Play Too?”, which gave the students some inspiration to have a go at adding speech bubbles to their own books.

 

Mathematics- During this week, the students have been practising their number skills. On Thursday, the students explored some number provocations. Here are the students showing off their number skills:

Technologies- This week during technologies, the students made finger puppets. Some students also made their own puppet plays after making their creations.

Religion- On Sunday, the 10th of April, it will be Palm Sunday. Today, the students learnt about the story of Palm Sunday. Each student created a picture depicting what happened on Palm Sunday.

Word Study- This week we focused on the letters “Gg” and “Oo”. The students practised writing these letters and came up with lists of words beginning with the letter sounds. They then used many fine motor skills to create a goldfish for the letter g and an octopus for the letter o.

Book Making- This week, during book making sessions, the students have been focusing on adding details to the pictures that they have been drawing in their books. It may be something, like adding more colour to their drawings, or more little detailed pictures in their scenes that they have created.

Reading- Each morning this week, we spent time reading in the classroom. It was wonderful to see the students reading by themselves or with a friend.

Mathematics- This week we have been exploring patterns with the students. Students used different materials in the classroom to create their own patterns.

Technologies- Since the start of the term, we have been practising cutting skills, gluing skills, folding skills and twisting skills, using paper and pipe cleaners. The students created their own picture on a piece of card using the techniques that we have been exploring.
