Week 9 – Learning Update

Hello RTH & RLY Families,

We are only one week away from holidays, so here is our week of learning that recapped our term…

Literacy:

This week in word study we began to reflect on what we have learnt throughout the term. This involved connecting starting sounds to words, writing previously learnt sounds on whiteboards, constructing sentences and writing CVC, CCVC & CVCC words that we have learnt. In book making we focused on suing big and bold writing in our books for important information, looked at fact boxes and the importance of using accurate colour in our drawings to ensure our pictures are accurate.

Mathematics:

In mathematics this week we looked at shapes, focusing on 2D shapes. We reviewed what we know about shapes, we sorted shapes, went for a shape nature walk, constructed our own shapes and then were able to create pictures with shapes.

Health:

In health, we reviewed personal skills, social skills, protective behaviours, children’s rights and help-seeking strategies. We discussed respectful social skills when interacting, understanding the purpose of protective behaviours and applying this health focused information in our lives.

Religion:

This week we looked at different faiths and traditions again, focusing on other holy books. We discussed why different religions have different holy books, the importance of them and why they are special to their given religion.

HaSS:

In HaSS this week we focused on the fact that we are living on Indigenous land that holds significance to First Nations Australians. We discussed our noticing’s of Kaurna Land and looked at a First Nations Australians map of Australia.

Technologies/Arts:

This week in technologies in arts we completed STEAM challenges. We applied our technologies and arts knowledge to different STEAM challenges, ranging from testing strengths, gravity, ability to build and so on.

Science:

In science, we looked at students’ knowledge about materials and properties of clothing. We spoke about the different benefits of different materials and then selected items that we would pack in our suitcase if we were going camping.

REMINDERS:

Reading at home:

Please don’t feel pressured to read with your children at home as we would like this to be a fun experience for you both however, if you are able to, it would support your children’s learning greatly if you could find some time to enjoy a picture book together or work on their readers.

Nuts:

We have children with anaphylaxis in our classrooms and Nutella poses a danger to their health. We are strictly a nut free environment so please be mindful of this when packing lunch boxes.

Colour Run:

Colour run is next week on Thursday, students are asked to wear a white t-shirt as they will be sprayed with washable paint during the colour run.

Spring Fair Donations:

We have our spring fair upcoming, and the reception cohort are seeking donations for our cookie decorating stall. Families are not expected nor required to provide a donation, but if you are able to it would be greatly appreciated. Items we are after are:

  • Party Mix Lollies
  • Cookie Decorations
  • Serviettes
  • Plastic Cups/Bowls
  • Small Marshmallows
  • Milk Arrowroot/Marie Biscuits (or similar biscuit)

Hello RTH & RLY Families,

Welcome to the end of Week 8, here’s a quick recap of our week…

Mathematics:

We continued with our part-whole operations this week, by connecting our addition and subtraction knowledge with different materials. This looked like adding and subtracting with number lines, number bonds, ten frames and through art. We concluded the week with an assessment of this unit of work and next week we will be moving on to shapes!

Health:

In health this week we reflected on identifying different parts of our body and using the correct terms to name them. This may spark a conversation at home so please feel free to come speak to us if you have any questions.

Religion:

In religion this week we finished an assessment on our understanding of celebrations within the Catholic Church.

HaSS/Tech/Arts:

Learning Reflection – Week 2, Term 3, 2024

Welcome to the end of Week 2, RTH & RLY families,

Here’s a little review of what we did in class this week…

Literacy:

This week we reflected on our previous learning of graphemes and phonemes. We looked at onset and rime, focusing on the way sounds and letters can create a word. This is helping put our previous learnings into practice. In book making, we are looking at different types of books we can make, with our first focus on nursery rhymes and information texts. We’re exploring the different literary conventions of a narrative versus an information text.

Mathematics:

This week we began our focus on numbers to 100, with reflection on numbers to 20. This allowed us to represent numbers, write numerals, use number lines, use ten frames, compare numbers, create art based around numbers and apply them in everyday use throughout the school.

Health:

In health, we focused on hygiene and self-care.

Religion:

In religion this week, we explored the Bible as a sacred text.

HASS:

This week, we looked at recognising and recording features of familiar places. Focusing on what we see, touch and hear; helping us connect with our senses.

Art/Design:

In Design we explored how brands use eye catching logos to sell their products, we then moved on to Arts where we used the flags of the countries in the Olympic Games and brainstormed how we could design our own flag that would be eye catching. With our theme being the Olympic Games for this integrated unit for the term across the two learning areas, we started watching races and events which was very fun and engaging!

Science:

This week in science, we tied HASS to science and focused on using our senses to look, feel and behave. We looked at things such as liquids, fabrics, elastics and soft/hard items.

We have had such a great start to this term and look forward to what awaits!
