Learning Reflection – RLY & RTH – Week 6, Term 2, 2024

Hello RLY and RTH families and welcome to the end of week 6!

Here’s a little snapshot of what we got up to this week…

Literacy:

Now that we have covered the basic alphabetic principle (all 26 letters and sounds!), we have begun our revision of these before we begin to move in to digraphs. We reviewed our heart words so far, all letters and sounds, rhyme, syllabification, CVC words and interactive writing.

We also began our new spotlight study in Bookmaking which is: Ways to Add Words to Our Books! We have focused on using Headings (info text), speech bubbles and big and bold writing.

Mathematics:

This week we started our new unit of work on Data. We learnt what data is, how to display it, different types of graphs, and how to interpret and analyse it!

Health:

We spoke this week about ‘bullying’. We discussed what bullying looks and feels like, how we can support each other, and what to do if it happens to us or our friends.

HaSS:

This week we focused on celebrations and reflected on the diverse celebrations within our classrooms. We looked at various celebrations and the importance of those celebrations.

Science:

This week in science we finished our unit of work on how things move by deciding which objects would roll, bounce or slide.

Religion:

We focused on how our school is a Catholic school and went for a walk to discuss any Catholic symbols we could see in our community.

Technologies:

This week we explored design and technologies by making our own houses for the three little pigs using either straw, sticks or bricks! We loved it!

REMINDERS:

Crows Kickstart

Each Tuesday from 3:30-4:30 the Adelaide Crows Football Club are doing a kickstart program each week to help students build their football skills. This is free for families once registered if you choose to do so.

Try at Home Books

This week we have attached a new focus on our ‘try at home books’, with new letters and words to focus on through the next few weeks. These books are just for casual reading with your children if you have the time and they want to, however don’t feel like you need to, we do so much in class! It’s really just an opportunity for your children to share their learning with you. You don’t need to add anything to/write in these books!

We look forward to seeing you next Wednesday and enjoy your extra long weekend at home!

Learning Reflection – RLY & RTH – Week 4, Term 2, 2024.

Hello RTH & RLY families,

This week felt a little bit busy! Unfortunately Ms. Yeend was away sick from Tuesday to Thursday which meant RLY was lucky to have a few different teachers! Here is a brief update about what we got up to…

Literacy:

This week we looked at the new graphemes and phonemes of ‘Yy’ & ‘Xx’. We practiced these letters and used them in CVC words to deepen our understandings. The new word of ‘you’ was introduced this week and was added to our heart word list. We became letter investigators and sorted words containing the letter ‘y’ followed by searching for them in books we read in class.

We also continued with our author focus of Mo Williems, we have now looked at all his major stories and are able to break down different ideas as a class to put into our own books. This looks like: extended speech bubbles, extra movement lines and much more.

Mathematics:

This week we moved on to part-whole operations, with the focus on addition and subtraction. We did this by focusing on sums up to ten to help solidify understandings. As a class we did various addition and subtraction sums both written and through play. We also looked at addition using our fingers and how to use a ten frame to help us solve equations.

Health:

This week we looked at what a relationship circles is and who we would have in ours. We then created our own version of a relationship circle and discussed the important and safe people in our lives.

HaSS:

In the lead up to interviewing a family member as a part of HaSS, we looked at what interviews are, what kinds of questions are usually asked and why people do them.

Science:

Continuing on from our previous learning in Science about how things move, we investigated items that roll and don’t roll. We posed wonderings and hypothesised as well as justified our ideas using scientific vocabulary.

Religion:

We watched a video containing a lot of information about Catholic history and then did a group brainstorm after the video to talk about the prominent Catholic history we know of what we learnt about in the video. We then chose one part of Catholic history and drew that in our learning journals.

Technologies/Arts:

This week we continued our learning about drawing on the iPads with a focus on ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, focusing on a specific page that we had to recreate.

REMINDER:

RLY and RTH – Learning update – Week 2, Term 2, 2024

Welcome to the end of term 2!

This week we explored…

Literacy:

Continuing with our spotlight focus for bookmaking on Mo Willems, we looked at drawing Elephant and Piggie! We then used this knowledge, and the understanding of the different literary conventions Mo Willems uses in his books to put them into action in our own! We’re even starting to add words to our books that make sense to the ready with the illustrations!

We learnt a new letter/sound: Ww. We added a new heart word to our list: She/she. Then we used our new heart word and the letter W to write sentences together in our English books and illustrate them.

Maths:

We completed our unit of work on patterning this week and now know what the core is of a pattern, what an AB, ABC, AABB, AAB and ABB patterns are! Next week we will start our new unit of work on part-whole operations, looking at addition and subtraction.

Health:

We learnt about our rights as humans and special rights as children – please feel free to talk with your children about these – they are the 12 rights of the child, and guess what? One of their rights is to PLAY!

HaSS:

We learnt about who is in our community and the different types of communities we are a part of.

Science:

Continuing from our learning last week about how objects move, we explored how our bodies move! We did this through a game with flash cards where we had to make our bodies move in the way that the person in the picture is!

Religion:

This week we learnt about Pentecost. We learnt that Pentecost took place after Jesus had died and was raised to new life by God and returned to heaven, leaving the disciples on their own.

Technologies/ArtS:

We continued our learning about drawing on the iPads and used this to retell the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.

We look forward to seeing you all return for Week 3!

Ms. Yeend and Ms. Tiana.

RLY & RTH – Weekly Blog – Week 11, Term 1, 2024.

Hello RLY and RTH children and families and welcome to the END OF TERM 1!!!!

We can’t quite believe that we are already about to celebrate the end of our first term of school! Ms Yeend and Ms Tiana are both extremely proud of how well the children have all settled in to school and can’t wait to see what Term 2 will bring!

This week we focused on integrating all of our learning in each subject area over the term to solidify and re-visit our new knowledge before the break.

We also had our very first sports day that saw the Cream team as the victors! What a special and fun day!

Thank you to all of the children and families for a very successful and fun first term. We hope you have a great two weeks together and will be ready to welcome you back on Monday 29th April.

Ms Yeend and Ms Tiana.

Rly & RTH – Weekly Blog – Week 9, Term 1, 2024

Hello RTH & RLY Families,

We have reached the end of week 9 and have had a learning filled week where we have strengthened our knowledge and learnt new things!

Literacy:

Throughout week 9 RTH and RLY have learnt the graphemes and phonemes of ‘Hh’ and ‘Bb’. We continuously reflect on our previous phonemes and graphemes from previous weeks to strengthen our understandings to continue to make CVC words. We have focused on the use of vowels in CVC words also. We have continued to rhyme, clap syllables and blend words to build our literary knowledge. Lastly, we have been focusing on our high frequency words once again with a focus on last week’s word of ‘to’ and this week’s word: ‘on’.

Numeracy:

This week we focused on position and location and used our classroom to hide in areas and then describe the position (on top of, under, between etc) and location (table, chairs, books etc). We have been using the book Rosie’s Walk to explore these positional and locational words and practiced using a map representing the narrative of the book.

Play Inquiry:

Students engaged in play inquiry each morning, with a strong focus on our literacy work. This supported students’ relationships in the classroom and connected with the focus on CVC words, our graphemes and phonemes of the week and building a love of reading through the use of books.

Technologies/Science:

This week we continued our living things focus through looking further into the habitats of their chosen animal from the previous week. We were able to individually take photos of the animals chosen in their habitat, where we were able to reflect on our ability to understand habitats and the technological ability of taking clear and precise photos through placing the photos taken on a slideshow. We then reflected on each photo as a class.

We also did an activity where children were asked to cut and glue a bunny on to a plate as an Easter activity that also linked to the technology curriculum where children extend their cutting and gluing skills.

HaSS:

This week for HaSS we explored our identities through creating an identity collage where we drew images of the things we liked and cut out pictures from magazines.

Health:

This week we explored what an emergency is. We discussed the phone number to call and the different types of emergency services we have to help us. We also drew a picture of an emergency and the resolution (fire, ambulance, police).

Religion:

For Holy Week we discussed the importance of each day and did a stations of the cross activity where we walked around the school and re-told the story of Jesus’ crucifixion. We also had a JP liturgy in the hall on Thursday where children took part in remembering Jesus’ story.

Quick Reminder:

If you are running late to pick your child up, we please ask you ring the front office so they can contact us to let us know. That way we can take the student to the office as class ends at 3pm each day.

Thankyou for your continuing support and we hope you all have a happy and safe Easter!

Ms. Tiana & Ms. Yeend

RLY and RTH – Weekly Blog – Week 7, Term 1, 2024.

Hello RTH & RLY Families,

Welcome to the end of week 7 and the completion of our very first on stage whole school assembly!

We were all beaming with pride at these amazing people on stage and the school was buzzing afterwards! What an excellent job they all did standing up there on stage dancing, singing and smiling! Our next assembly will be next semester and with our buddy classes!

Literacy:

This week we focused on the graphemes and phonemes of ‘Ff’ and ‘Ee’. We reflected on our past graphemes and phonemes to help us continue blending sounds to make CVC words. We were able to reflect on our weekly poem to support the understandings of our graphemes and phonemes, along with support the ability to rhyme. We worked towards the high frequency word ‘and’ and reflected on the previous weeks word of ‘that’ to support our reading and spelling in class.

Numeracy:

This week we started our new unit of work on shapes! We looked at some basic shapes, what makes a shape, the different attributes they have, and engaged in playful numeracy as we get used to our new materials and showed off what we already know! Next week we will be looking at shapes in our lives and nature and linking to some real world examples.

Play Inquiry:

Students continued with their play inquiry each morning, supporting the transition into the classroom, and supporting the growing connections within the class. We have had a strong focus on ensuring play inquiry is meaningful and has connections to their other learning areas.

Technologies/Science:

This week we didn’t have iPads as our day to have them fell on the public holiday. However next week we will have them on Tuesday and we will be exploring new educational apps that have been downloaded and that link to what we are currently learning in class. We’re always careful to ensure technology is used to extend our learning and not replace what we could be doing in class with our peers and hands on materials.

Within science we continued our focus on living things and began observations/investigation about an animal of their choice from the MUDLA. We will create a piece of work over the coming weeks showcasing what their chosen animal needs to survive.

HaSS:

This week we looked at likes and dislikes and created an identity map that explored the things we do like!

Health:

This week we talked about warning signs in our body, especially the ones we experience when there is danger or we feel unsafe. We mapped these physiological feelings on a big outline of our bodies and then transferred this learning to our learning journals.

Religion:

This week we looked at the different ways and places in which people choose to pray to God and next week we will be looking at the different types of songs people sing that help them to praise their Lord.

We can’t wait to see what week 8 brings – can’t believe we only have 4 weeks until the school holidays! This is also a good time to remind families to book any vacation care needed as it does book out during school holidays!

Thanks!

Ms. Yeend and Ms. Tiana

Week 5, Term 1, 2024 – Learning Reflection – RLY and RTH

Hello RTH & RLY Families,

Welcome to the end of week 5! We can’t believe we are almost halfway through term 1!

This week both classes met their buddy class for the first time. It was so lovely to meet some of the older children here and make connections. These relationships will support the reception children when playing in the yard as they now have older children they can look to and who can help them during recess and lunch!

Literacy:

This week we focused on the graphemes and phonemes of ‘Nn’ and ‘Dd’. Through the other graphemes and phonemes, we have learnt over the past four weeks we were able to remain consistent with our focus on CVC words. We focused on words such as ‘nap’, ‘dip’, ‘tap’ and so forth. This continued with a focus on syllables and rhyming also, to build further literacy knowledge. We engaged in bookmaking where students continued to write their books, focusing on ensuring each page is used, re-reading work and so on. Lastly, we continued with our playful literacy where we read, write, and engage in play together.

Numeracy:

We worked towards counting from 0-20 this week, focusing on ensuring we are counting in correct order, recognising correlating amounts with number names, and counting backwards. We did this by creating our own number lines, number cards, playing number-based games, engaging in number-based stories and numeral display pictures to recognise numbers and the amounts within a number. We continued with our numeracy play to promote the recognition of numbers and to engage in play with others. We also practiced counting forwards and backwards from any number from 0-20 using a number generator!

We started some maths assessments this week as well with a focus on assessing where children are at with their numeral recognition, subitising, cardinality and partitioning.

Play Inquiry:

Students continued with their play inquiry each morning, supporting the transition into the classroom, and supporting the growing connections within the class. We have had a strong focus on ensuring play inquiry is meaningful and has connections to their other learning areas.

Technologies/Science:

We integrated technologies with literacy this week and children filmed their friends reading the books they made! Fair to say we got a lot of videos of the floor and the roof but it was such a fun experience!

This week we went on a scavenger hunt through the school grounds looking for living and non living things, it was so much fun to explore and go digging for beetles and bugs!

Health:

This week we discussed safe and unsafe situations and how to keep ourselves safe at all times. We talked about warning signs, safer strangers, safer buildings and practiced saying ‘NO!’ with a loud brave voice!

HaSS:

This week we talked about our own safe place and what that looks like and feels like. Some children chose their homes, others chose the beach and some even chose school!

Religion:

We spoke this week about compassion and what this means and looks like and kept a focus on families and caring relationships.

Important Information:

Photos

  • We have a belonging photo wall of students with their families where we are slowly growing our photos of children with their families. We ask that you bring in a photo or email a photo of your child and their family for our belonging wall with some information about you all.

Assembly

  • RTH & RLY has an assembly in week 7. We are focusing on the diversity that Holy Family encompasses. For our assembly, we were hoping that either RTH & RLY teachers could record the students discussing their culture if permitted or if families could send in a video of their child discussing their culture and one of their favourite things about their culture as the compilation of videos will be shared within our assembly.

We can’t wait to see you in week six!

Ms. Yeend and Ms. Tiana

RLY & RTH – Weekly Blog – Week 3, Term 1, 2024

Hello RTH & RLY Families,

We are now at the end of our third week of school! We’ve really started to get to know each other now and have developed lots of meaningful connections with one another. Alongside this we have also started diving deeper into the curriculum whilst maintaining our playful pedagogy.

Literacy:

This week we have focused on the graphemes and phonemes of Tt and Pp. We have now covered Ss, Aa, Tt and Pp. This means we can now start blending and sounding out some CVC words such as ‘tap’, ‘sat’, ‘pat’ and so on. This week we kept a strong focus on our bookmaking, introducing the children to books and building their knowledge on what is involved in a book. We continued with our playful literacy where we continued to read together, work on writing our names and engage in social play to continuously build skills.

Numeracy:

We continued with our 0-10 counting and subitising this week and worked towards the recognition of numerals also. We also compared collections of objects and introduced and discussed the meaning of the following words: equal/not equal, same/not the same and collections. The children also engaged in their numeracy play where they worked with mathematical tools to engage in play with others.

Play Inquiry:

Students continued with their play inquiry each morning, supporting the engagement in classroom resources and new relationships being built with all students. This week we have embedded a focus on the letters we are learning about through our morning play to make sure it is present and visible in our environments all day.

Technologies/Science:

Continuing with our focus on living and non-living beings we took part in an activity identifying living and non living beings and then looked at what plants need to survive (and hence what makes them living beings). We used this inquiry approach to create our own grass heads that we will observe and document as they grow!

Health:

This week we made cards for people we love and discussed the meaning of Valentines Day!

HaSS:

The focus this week was on likes and dislikes. We discussed how we can like and dislike different things to each other and that’s ok! We’re all different and unique in our own ways!

Religion:

With the beginning of Lent this week we focused on the meaning behind Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday where the whole school gathered for mass in the hall.

Important Information:

RLY and RTH -Weekly Blog – Term 1, Week 1, 2024.

Welcome to RLY and RTH’s weekly learning blog! We can’t believe we’ve already completed our first full week of school! Both Ms. Yeend and Ms. Tiana are so proud of all of the children on how well they have settled into school life here at Holy Family. It is so lovely seeing all of your beautiful smiles when you walk in each day, ready to find out what we’re learning about!

Here we will post photos of the week, any news and events, and a short write up about what we have been doing. Please enjoy looking at these photos with your families on the weekend!

Literacy:

Our literacy block happens every morning after our play and before recess. This week was all about playful literacy, reading together, dramatic play, exploring our names and getting to know each other through games and songs! We have been observing the children to gain insight into their strengths and interests so we can plan appropriately for the coming weeks.

Numeracy:

Numeracy will occur every day between recess and lunch. We had a big emphasis on number (0-10) and subtilising this week. Again, noticing and observing where everyone is at and what they enjoy playing with during playful numeracy time.

Play inquiry:

Play inquiry forms the first half an hour of each day and involves lots of provocations where children can explore using their senses, form connections, ground themselves for the day and get ready for our morning literacy block.

General information:

  • P.E. is on Thursdays for both classes so children are required to wear their P.E. uniform on these days
  • Library is on Tuesdays for both classes so children will need to bring their library bags with their books on this day. For new students, they will be issued with library bags next week. Returning students will need to bring their library bags from last year. If students do not bring their library bag they will not be able borrow books.
  • Library books – students are able to borrow 2 picture books and 3 readers. They are in no way expected to be reading these, the purpose of them coming home is to read together for enjoyment whilst we work on their reading skills at school.
  • The bell rings at 8:50am each day and then 3pm.
  • OSHC is available for outside hours care – please contact the school if you require this.
  • Lunch orders can be made in person at the canteen or via the QKR app before 9am each day.
  • Please note we have children in these classes with anaphylaxis to nuts – no nuts can be brought in to school, including nutella and peanut butter as this would pose a serious health risk.
  • We would love to find out more about each family and their cultures, faiths and celebrations. We ask that you please bring in a photo of your family for our belonging wall along with some information about you all!
  • Children must wear hats at all times whilst outside during Term 1 and 4 – if you do not have a HFCS hat please bring any hat in for your child so that they can play outside at recess and lunch.
  • We apply sunscreen every recess and lunch – if your child needs their own sunscreen please bring this in with their name on it.
  • Please label all belongings so it is easy to return if lost.

Parent Information Night:

Next Monday (5th February) we will be hosting a parent information night in our classroom from 6-7pm. You are all welcome to attend, we will go over any news and provide a brief overview of this terms curriculum.

We look forward to seeing you all next week!

Ms. Yeend and Ms. Tiana.
