Hello RTH & RLY Families,

We are only one week away from holidays, so here is our week of learning that recapped our term…

This week in word study we began to reflect on what we have learnt throughout the term. This involved connecting starting sounds to words, writing previously learnt sounds on whiteboards, constructing sentences and writing CVC, CCVC & CVCC words that we have learnt. In book making we focused on suing big and bold writing in our books for important information, looked at fact boxes and the importance of using accurate colour in our drawings to ensure our pictures are accurate.

Mathematics:

In mathematics this week we looked at shapes, focusing on 2D shapes. We reviewed what we know about shapes, we sorted shapes, went for a shape nature walk, constructed our own shapes and then were able to create pictures with shapes.

Health:

In health, we reviewed personal skills, social skills, protective behaviours, children’s rights and help-seeking strategies. We discussed respectful social skills when interacting, understanding the purpose of protective behaviours and applying this health focused information in our lives.

Science:

In science, we looked at students’ knowledge about materials and properties of clothing. We spoke about the different benefits of different materials and then selected items that we would pack in our suitcase if we were going camping.

REMINDERS:

Reading at home:

Please don’t feel pressured to read with your children at home as we would like this to be a fun experience for you both however, if you are able to, it would support your children’s learning greatly if you could find some time to enjoy a picture book together or work on their readers.

Nuts:

We have children with anaphylaxis in our classrooms and Nutella poses a danger to their health. We are strictly a nut free environment so please be mindful of this when packing lunch boxes.

Colour Run:

Colour run is next week on Thursday, students are asked to wear a white t-shirt as they will be sprayed with washable paint during the colour run.

Spring Fair Donations:

We have our spring fair upcoming, and the reception cohort are seeking donations for our cookie decorating stall. Families are not expected nor required to provide a donation, but if you are able to it would be greatly appreciated. Items we are after are:

This week we reviewed some of our graphemes and phonemes from last term. These were ‘Ss’, ‘Aa’, ‘Tt’, ‘Pp’, ‘Ii’, ‘Nn’, ‘Mm’, ‘Oo’, ‘Pp’, ‘Cc’, ‘Bb’ & ‘Uu’. We used these letters to make CVC words and have been using them in the construction of sentences. We introduced a new high frequency word: ‘he’ and have been reviewing last terms words of: ‘and’, ‘I’, ‘the’, ‘in’, ‘on’, ‘that’, ‘this’, ‘and’ & ‘to’. We also introduced the author Mo Willems to both of the classes and looked at some of the books he has written/illustrated and have been implementing some ideas into our own books.

Numeracy/Art:

We began the week with a quick reflection on numbers and shapes from last term. We then moved on to our new focus of patterns. Students were taught what ‘AB’ and ‘ABC patterns are and have had time to make patterns both inside and outside of the classroom. We used our ideas of ABC patterns to relate to one of our texts, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and then created our own caterpillar with an ‘ABC’ pattern.

Play Inquiry:

Students engaged in play inquiry each morning, with a strong focus on our literacy work. This supported students’ relationships in the classroom and connected with the focus on CVC words, our graphemes and phonemes of the week and building a love of reading through the use of books.

Health:

We looked at the differences in needs and wants. As a class we were able to discuss the difference between needs and wants, then creating a checklist of things an animal would need, rather than want. Students were then able to draw their ideas down.

Religion:

This week we focused on why church is important and what the details they can remember about church. We were able to relate love, relationships, the Bible, and various other things with church. Once this was established students drew a church and then what church consists of next to the church.

We had a great first week back and can’t wait for another week of fun filled learning!

Next week we will be sending home an ‘at home’ learning package, this will be completely optional and provides opportunities for further learning if your child would like to do so.
