We began the week with a quick reflection on numbers and shapes from last term. We then moved on to our new focus of patterns. Students were taught what ‘AB’ and ‘ABC patterns are and have had time to make patterns both inside and outside of the classroom. We used our ideas of ABC patterns to relate to one of our texts, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and then created our own caterpillar with an ‘ABC’ pattern.

Play Inquiry:

Week 10 – Learning Update

Hello RTH & RLY Families,

We are almost at the end of our first term, and we are so proud of how everyone has learn’t new things, grown, and developed within the first term!

We continued with our focus on CVC and high frequency words; along with working on rhyme, syllables and blending of words.

Numeracy:

We continued position and location through applying ourselves throughout the school yard. This allowed for students to place themselves ‘next to’ objects, ‘under’ objects, ‘in between’ objects and so on. This allowed us to work on a position and location book where we were able to draw objects based on a verbal positional location.

Play Inquiry:

Students engaged in play inquiry each morning, with a strong focus on our literacy work. This supported students’ relationships in the classroom and connected with the focus on CVC words, our graphemes and phonemes of the week and building a love of reading through the use of books.

This week in science we applied our comprehension knowledge in our books. To do this we listened to a text about habitats, as this has been a large focus the past few weeks and then drew something we remembered from the story in our books. This helped reinforce our knowledge of habitats.

Health:

We continued with emergencies this week but had a focus on what an emergency may look like in school. We brainstormed different possible emergencies (a friend is hurt, a lockdown etc.) and once again drew a possible emergency and the resolution in our books (get a teacher, follow instructions etc.).

We were able to individually take photos of the animals chosen in their habitat, where we were able to reflect on our ability to understand habitats and the technological ability of taking clear and precise photos through placing the photos taken on a slideshow. We then reflected on each photo as a class.

We then engaged in drawing what plants need to live, focusing on details such as: water, air, sun etc.

HaSS/Art:

This week we combined HaSS and art due to it being Harmony Week this week. We discussed the importance of Harmony Week and the values it holds. We strengthened our understandings through doing Harmony Week questions where we were able to discover differences between people, along with similarities. We finished this lesson off with having the whole class stick their handprint in a heart shape to show that everyone belongs.

Health:

We spoke about risk taking through what risks look like, feel like and sound like. We then drew risks in our books.

We engaged in our last week’s focus on numbers for the term and solidified our understandings of counting both forwards and backwards, this was done through hands on tasks. Along with this we worked on conservation, one-to-one correspondence and subitising. We engaged in activities such as playdough counting, ‘how many pieces of pasta’ and then moved on to counting amounts of money. Throughout the numeracy play time, used to solidify understandings that are taught during lessons; we were able to complete the maths assessments for counting in term one! We are excited to start a new topic next week!

Numeracy:

We worked towards counting from 0-20 this week, focusing on ensuring we are counting in correct order, recognising correlating amounts with number names, and counting backwards. We did this by creating our own number lines, number cards, playing number-based games, engaging in number-based stories and numeral display pictures to recognise numbers and the amounts within a number. We continued with our numeracy play to promote the recognition of numbers and to engage in play with others.

Play Inquiry:

Students continued with their play inquiry each morning, supporting the transition into the classroom, and supporting the growing connections within the class. We have had a strong focus on ensuring play inquiry is meaningful and has connections to their other learning areas.
