Week 7 – Learning Update

Hello RTH & RLY Families,

What a jam-packed week we had, here is what it looked like…

Literacy:

In word study this week we reflected on the ‘th’ digraph and then moved on to ‘ch’, figuring out different words that involve these digraphs, words that rhyme with these digraphs and implementing words with these digraphs into sentences. In bookmaking, we continued with our new spotlight of ‘information texts’, this involved talking about different topics, the different types of words we can use to share information and implementing double page spreads.

Mathematics:

We continued with our part-whole operations this week, by connecting our addition and subtraction knowledge with different materials. This looked like adding and subtracting with number lines, number bonds, ten frames and through art.

Health:

In health this week we reflected on identifying different parts of our body, concepts of personal space/boundaries and the recognising of safe and unsafe secrets. We reflected through dances, story time, flashcards and discussions.

Religion:

In religion this week we looked at celebrating faith, involving Easter, Christmas and so forth. Once gaining understandings on Catholic celebrations we created a celebration card based on the celebration of our choice.

HaSS:

In HaSS we began our assessment with drawing a bird’s eye view of log park that is accurate, along with naming the features that are in log park.

Technologies:

Throughout technologies we tied our HaSS assessment with our technologies assessment by beginning to design our own nature play area in log park.

Arts:

We have tied our HaSS and technologies assessment with our art assessment and began to create a 3D model of our 2D design of log park.

Science:

In science this week we reflected on what is waterproof/not waterproof and then looked at magnetic materials and tested our magnets against different materials.

Reading at home:

Please don’t feel pressured to read with your children at home as we would like this to be a fun experience for you both however, if you are able to, it would support your children’s learning greatly if you could find some time to enjoy a picture book together or work on their readers.

Nuts:

We have children with anaphylaxis in our classrooms and Nutella poses a danger to their health. We are strictly a nut free environment so please be mindful of this when packing lunch boxes.

Welcome to the end of week 6! Here is a quick breakdown of what we did this week…

Literacy:

This week we continued with digraphs, focusing on ‘sh’, ‘ee’ and ‘th’. We discussed different words that have the chosen digraphs in them, creating make believe words with these sounds, finding words that rhyme with the digraphs and creating sentences with the digraphs. We looked at books with our digraphs in them and then investigated books further, with a focus on titles, characters, techniques, and our thoughts on stories.

We started a new spotlight in bookmaking – ‘Information books: Write to teach your reader’. We delved deeper into headings, titles and diagrams.

Mathematics:

Continuing with our unit on part whole operations, this week we looked at ways to group collections, represent larger numbers using MAB blocks and practicing subitising, addition and subtraction.

Health:

This week we looked discussed the important difference between a happy surprise and a secret and how we can keep ourselves safe.

Religion:

In religion, we explored prayer and how this brings us closer go God. Please refer to an email from Anthony Terminello (APRIM) about what we will be teaching in weeks 8-10 in case you have any queries.

HaSS:

This week in HaSS, we revisited the fact all places have features, features can be shown through symbols, birds eye views and pictorial maps. We then drew either a bird’s eye view or a pictorial map of a place that is special to us.

Art/Design:

In arts and design this week, we explored log park again and planned out what we would do if we could change the way it looks/add in new nature play ideas. We then drew these plans on the iPads.

Science:

This week in science, we finished our unit of work on materials by creating a boat out of provided materials and predicted whether it would float/the materials would be waterproof.

REMINDERS:

Reading at home:

Please don’t feel pressured to read with your children at home as we would like this to be a fun experience for you both however, if you are able to, it would support your children’s learning greatly if you could find some time to enjoy a picture book together or work on their readers.

NUTELLA:

We have children with anaphylaxis in our classrooms and Nutella poses a serious danger to their health. We are strictly a nut free environment so please be mindful of this when packing lunch boxes.

With our theme being the Olympic Games for this integrated unit for the term across the two learning areas, we started watching races and events which was very fun and engaging!

Science:

This week in science, we tied HASS to science and focused on using our senses to look, feel and behave. We looked at things such as liquids, fabrics, elastics and soft/hard items.
