Term 1 Week 3 and Week 4 – Los Saludos (Greetings)

The Year 6/7’s reviewed their conversational skills and built on prior knowledge to create dialogues. Students presented their conversations in whatever medium they wanted e.g. a comic strip/ script / iMovie. It was left to their own preference how they wanted to present the information and what Spanish language they wanted to include. Many students explored new language structures to compliment their presentations. Students were very creative in their presentations ranging from comic strips to a Mine craft video.

Term 1 – Week 3

This week in Spanish Señora Opazo has been teaching The Mexican Hat Dance to the Reception/1’s and Year 2’s. It is a joyful cultural dance that is easy and fun to learn.

You perform the Mexican Hat Dance with a friend. All you need is to be able to count to four and follow a basic rhythm.

Look at the fun the students in 2RG are having!

Year 5/6 Investigations Descriptions – Focus on Self

The Year 5/6’s are investigating how to describe themselves in Spanish. They are formulating detailed descriptive sentences about themselves. They could use any format or structure they wanted to develop their text. I encouraged students to be as creative as they wanted in their language choices. It was wonderful to see the amazing language range that the students developed.

Señora Opazo and I are very excited about the new school year. We have beautiful new classrooms located in the St. Francis courtyard. We are fortunate enough to have a garden area that the students have the opportunity to use for their learning. They are really enjoying the new area! Fantastico!

El Dia de los Muertos

El Dia de los Muertos , The Day of the Dead is celebrated in many Hispanic countries on November 1st and 2nd of each year, coinciding with the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. El Dia de los Muertos is a holiday for remembering and honoring those who have passed. It is a loving ritual, full of joy and celebration.

During the first week of November we have had a fantastic time celebrating El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead). Students took part in a celebration of this wonderful cultural event. Señora Opazo constructed a beautiful alter display for the students to view which included sugar skulls and marigolds. The wonderful bakers at Bakers Delight were kind enough to bake us 35 loaves of Pan de Muertos (Bread of the Dead) for the children to sample. Pan de Muerto is a traditional Mexican sweet bread that is eaten during the Day of the Dead.  Some classes also had the chance to sample sugar skull cookies to celebrate the day. It has been a wonderful opportunity for students to reflect on aspects of their own culture and compare it with the Spanish culture.

La Comida (Food)

One of my favourite units as a Spanish teacher has always been La Comida!  This semester students have been able to enjoy learning all about comidas (food).

During this activity the students from 3/4MN and 3/4CP created comidas (food) using play dough and presented them to me in Spanish. The children were very creative in their designs and had lots of fun! Here are some examples of the fantastic work the students did.

The Year 3/4’s have also had the opportunity to create their favourite meal, Mi Comida Favorita. They were very imaginative in presenting their designs on paper plates to share with their partners.

Here are some examples of their great work!
