Tuesday (Term 4 | Week 5)

Welcome to a very hot Tuesday

NUMERACY: SHARED READING

We shared the story book, What’s the Time Mr Wolf? by Debi Gliori.

NUMERACY: BOOKMAKING

Mrs Papillo then shared her book about clocks and time. The features included: a clock face on each page; images that tell us what time of day it is; activities that match the time of day. Students were then invited to make their own books about time and clocks.

SHARED READING

Today we shared a book called Dipal’s Diwali, where a young Indian boy called Dipal told us how his family celebrate the festival of Diwali over five days.

On the first day of Diwali, Dipal and his family clean the house. They go to the market and buy clay diya lamps and fresh flowers to decorate their house.

The next day the family go to a Rangoli competition and admire the beautiful patterns:

Then they make their own Rangoli Pattern outside their home before preparing food and sweets for the celebration.

The next day, the family visit the temple to pray and make offerings to the Goddess Lakshmi. Everyone works together to make a special Rangoli Pattern to decorate the temple.

Back at home, the family place clay diya lamps around the doors and windows. They tell the story of Rama and Sita (which we listened to and watched yesterday).

As it gets dark, the family worship the Goddess Lakshmi and Dipal’s grandfather applies tilak to everyone’s foreheads.

The family sharea big feast of delicious Indian foods and sweets.

Then it is time for the fireworks!!!

LITERACY/ART/D&T ACTIVITIES

Today we continued with our salt dough diya lamps. We painted them and when they were dry, we added sparkly gems and glitter to make them look special and colourful.

We also prepared some sweet treats for Diwali …. coconut ice squares. Each child will bring home some sweets over the course of the week. Ingredients include: desiccated coconut, icing sugar, condensed milk and pink food colouring.

Some children also finished their Rangoli Patterns and Mehndi designs from yesterday.
