Spring Fair | This Sunday 23rd October!!

Hello Families,

This Sunday is our annual Spring Fair at Holy Family Catholic School.  Please come along and support your community.  There are amazing things to see and do.

This weekend your Spring Fair Committee shown below presents the 2022 Spring Fair . This is the 20th consecutive Spring Fair subsuming our 40th Birthday as a school having been established in 1981.

The purpose of the Spring Fair is more than a fundraiser it is a celebration of our culture of an inclusive school of excellence , engagement and enjoyment.

When you come to the Fair you will see parents, staff and leaders working side by side. You will see the diversity and talent of our people in action.

The purpose of the Spring Fair is to demonstrate to our children  that our community can achieve anything it puts it’s mind to. Our children are capable and talented.

If you can spare  an hour to help set up come to the school on Saturday morning at 9.30am. Bring the kids! Free BBQ. at 11am.

If you can help on Sunday simply turn up to a stall at any time between 11am and 8pm and offer to help. You will love being involved in your child’s school.

English | Handwriting, Phonics and Word Study

Health

Today the children listened to the story The Gingerbread Man and discuss examples of tricks or secrets that are shown in the story.  Then the children used small puppets to retell the story in small groups.

Maths

As part of our measurement focus this term, today the children explored the word time and what takes a short time as opposed to a long time.  When talking about time some children also said they have clocks in their homes that helps them to tell the time.  The children drew a clock in their books.

This week the children have been practising their team’s sports day chants.  The aim has been to develop teamwork,  a sense of team spirit and show their commitment to being part of a team.  Here are some snapshots from over the course of the week.

Iteka: Indigenous artist in residence 

This week, Iteka brought in some Aboriginal artefacts that have been passed down from generations in her family. The students enjoyed learning and being able to hold, touch and feel the different tools and materials.

Religion

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

Jesus got into a boat and crossed the Sea of Galilee. When he heard that John the Baptizer had been beheaded by King Herod, he went to a deserted place, not far from the city of Bethsaida. Jesus brought his disciples with him, saying, “Come with me, away from where people live, so we can rest.”

However, so many people were going to see Jesus that he and the disciples hardly had a chance to eat. After they got into the boat, a large crowd saw them leave and followed them on foot along the edge of the sea. Many other people in the towns along the way joined them. they brought those who were sick in hopes that Jesus would heal them. When the boats landed at the shore, the huge crowd was already there. Jesus welcomed them. He was filled with love for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. he spoke to them about the kingdom of God. He healed everyone who needed to be healed.

It was getting to be late in the day. The twelve apostles said to Jesus, “Send the people away so that they can go into the villages and buy some food for themselves. There is no food here.”

Jesus said, “You give them something to eat.” He asked Philip, who was from Bethsaida, “Where should we buy food for all these people?” Jesus knew what he would do. He asked Philip this question to test him.

Philip answered, “Eight months’ wages would not be enough to give each man even a bite.”

Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said, “Here is a boy who has five small barley loaves and two small fish, but what is that among so many people?”

Jesus told them to have the people sit down on the green grass in groups of fifty and one hundred. there was plenty of grass in that area. So the people sat down. There were about five thousand men there, not counting women and children. Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish. Looking up to heaven, he blessed it, thanking God for it. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples. They gave it to all the people. Everyone had as much to eat as he wanted.

The children listened to the story One Is a Snail Ten is A Crab this morning.  Earlier this term the children were introduced to this text and they revisited it today.  After reflecting on their peers recording from a few weeks ago the children continued their recording today and new understandings of addition.

The children has some fun today whilst learning some dance sequences to music.

Keeping Safe and Good Secrets

The discussion today was about good secrets and what good secrets could look like.  The teachers stated that bad secrets are something that they need to tell a trusted adult about.

Technology

Students explored different foods from around the world. They were able to discuss and share their favourite cuisine.

Religion

The children explored the meaning, differences and similarities in the story: Jesus blesses the children which is found in Mathhew’s , Mark’s  and Luke’s gospels. Students shared their observations.

English | Book making 

Well done tool our budding authors!  Everyone is making progress in one way or another as they reach the end of term 3.  Good to see the children being brave and adding words, having a consistent theme throughout their books and enjoying the process of becoming writers and illustrators.

Maths and Measurement | How heavy or how light?

After reading the story Hairy MacLary, the children were invited to think about how big or small the characters are in the story by comparing their sizes and discussing their weight according to how heavy or light each dog would be.

The students then explored the classroom and recorded items that were heavy or light by ‘hefting’ them.

Dance with Iteka

Today the children joined Iteka in the Hall where there was much more space to move and dance.  Iteka taught the children some songs and actions using the Adnyamathanha language from a region of South Australia.  The Adnyamathanha people are from the Flinders Ranges area.

Today the students used ‘scales’ to experiment with different objects in the classroom.

The Moon Lantern Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival is a popular harvest festival celebrated when the moon is at its fullest and brightest.

At Holy Family we will be celebrating the Moon Lantern Festival on Friday 9th September 2022. Students are invited to wear traditional or cultural clothing.

The class discussed safe and unsafe touching.  Mrs Norris read the story below that explained why Hattie did not like hugs but as smile was just as good for her! Students explored different ways of safe touch and when it feels uncomfortable or unsafe that they can say stop or no. 

Moon Lantern

The Moon Lantern Festival will be celebrated by our school this Friday and the children listened to the legend of how moon cakes are a symbol of love and kindness.

The children had lots of fun making their moon lanterns today.

Dance with Iteka

Iteka is a very talented dancer who also is able to share her knowledge of culture in the classroom. She is also able to share and create visual art with students.

Iteka Ukarla Sanderson-Bromley lives in Adelaide, South Australia. Her language groups are Adnyamathanha (Flinders Ranges), Narungga (Yorke Peninsula) and Yarliyandi (Simpson Desert. Iteka has grown up making regular trips home to ‘country’. She loves sharing her culture and does this through her art, dancing in “Of Desert and Sea”, as well as by guiding cultural tours in Adelaide as part of her family’s business.

The children were busily counting and recording their measurements today during a maths investigation.

Today the children interacted with Maxine the tortoise.  She was very mobile and very curious as the children reached out to say hello.

Students explored the concept of privacy and things that belong to them. This included personal belongings, personal information, personal medication and our bodies.

The children continued their measuring activities today.  Some children were using their problem solving as they attempted to use long units to measure long objects and short units to measure short objects.

Food Technology

Today the students explored where food comes from. For example , from, the farm, tree, animals or simply from our own gardens. Some students also noted and illustrated some ingredients that are used to make other foods. Have a look.

We revisited the creation story from Genesis. We discussed, reflected and shared how we can care for the environment/creation that God has given us.
