Congratulations Hudson for achieving 100 nights of reading –  well done.

Congratulations Hainbal for achieving 50 nights of reading – well done

Congratulations to Mattia for achieving 75 nights of reading – well done.

Come Read with me – a wonderful way to start the day

Each morning we look for letters and words in our books, as well as reading with our friends or independently. The magnifying glasses make it lots of fun.

Word Study

This week we explored the letter ‘Qq’ and the blend ‘ch’.

The students also built upon their high frequency word knowledge by copying, reading and drawing a picture to represent a short sentence.

Letter ‘Qq’

Blend – ch

Book Making

During Book Making the students continue to be brave spellers by adding words to their books. The students add familiar words or strings of letters or letters that represent the sounds they hear in the word. All of these are important building blocks for our students to be confident independent writers. The books the students are creating include wonderful detailed illustrations. The students are beginning to include details such as the weather, time of day, movement lines and facial expressions.

National Simultaneous  Story Time

On Wednesday we enjoyed a wonderful story with amazing illustrations in the hall with the whole school. This story was shared on Wednesday across Australia.

HASS

This week we shared the Cambodian folktake tale about ‘The Origin of the Tiger’

This story is a famous Cambodian folktale because it explains the origin of the tiger and also emphasizes the idea that people must cooperate together for the common good.

Together we found Australia using google earth and then ‘flew’ from School, Parafield Gardens to Cambodia.

https://earth.google.com

The students located Cambodia on a maps and  then coloured in Cambodia and drew a mini tiger representing the story.

Then the students made a tiger from cardboard.

Art/Drama

This week we made puppets to represent the story Goldilocks and the Three Bear which the students then acted out.

Numeracy

This week we were learning about 3 Dimensional shapes. As we were building, drawing, sorting different shapes we were also learning about their properties. We also talked about objects in the real world that were cones, cubes, cylinders, rectangular prisms and spheres.

Technology

Origami Dog

Students watched how to make an origami dog head. They create their own and add details using markers, crayons or pencils. .

Week 3 – Term 2

Another wonderful week in RPN and RMR!

Reading Achievements-

Congratulations to Jaylah for completing 50 nights of reading! Well done!

Congratulations to Kabir for completing 100 nights of reading! Well done!

Literacy- This week, we focused on the letters Yy and Zz- The students practised writing the lowercase and uppercase letters and then wrote words containing the sounds. The students also wrote some sentences. They then illustrated the sentences.

The letter Yy-

Sentences containing high frequency words-

Mathematics- This week, Numeracy Coach, Mr DePalma, ran a numeracy lesson on 3D shapes. The students had to try and make specific buildings with the shapes to see if they were able to stand on their own.

Health- During health lessons, we have been focusing on the topic of relationships. This week we honed in on, ‘what qualities our friends have’. After a discussion about friends, the students drew their friends and expressed a quality that they possess.

Reading

During ‘Come Read with Me’ the children have been using mini magnifying glasses to look for High Frequency Words and the letters for the week – ‘w’ and ‘x’. This activity each morning is building upon the children’s stamina for reading as they focus on each page for longer as they look for  the words and letters. Then they are very excited to shared their discoveries.

Word Study

Letter  – W w

Sentence: (The children copy these in their literacy books)

The cat said Meow.

The dog said woof.

During this time we focus upon:

  • Letter formation
  • Initial sounds – words that begin with ‘w’.
  • Sentence structure – capital letters, full stops and spaces between words.
  • Recognition of high frequency words
  • Comprehension  – drawing a picture to represent the text.

Word Study

Letter  – X x

  • Letter formation
  • Initial sounds – words that begin with ‘x’.
  • Sentence structure – capital letters, full stops and spaces between words.
  • Recognition of high frequency words
  • Comprehension  – drawing a picture to represent the text.

Numeracy

During numeracy we have been exploring 2 Dimensional shapes through:

  • Finding shapes around the room and sorting them into groups.
  • Shape games on the laptop
  • Shape pictures – using coloured paper
  • Shape rotation activities (Shape blocks, geo boards, drawing shapes and pop stick shapes.

All of these activities teach and reinforce the children’s ability to sort, describe and name different 2 D shapes.

Health

This week in health we talked about relationship circles. First we read the story Grandpa’s shoes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajBlaBW7FPk

Then we talked about the different people in our relationship circle that can help us: Starting with ourselves in the middle, Our family, friends and then other people in the community.

  • Creativity
  • Collaboration
  • Communication
  • Negotiation
  • Resilience
  • Sustained attention

Questions to ask your child:
Who did you play with?

What did you play with?

Did you learn anything new?

Did you have any problems to solve?

What was your favourite part?

Did you help anyone during play investigations?

HASS

During HASS we talked about- This is a map and this is a globe, how are they the same and how are they different.

Then we read the story Possum Magic.

As we read the story we followed the Possum’s journey around Australia, locating the different cities on the map.

Underneath the picture the students drew a picture of each of the shapes and recorded how many of each shape were in the picture.

Science- For science this term, our learning intention is that objects are made of materials that have observable properties. This week, we had an introduction to this concept. The students had to draw any object and place it under the correct heading of what it is made from.

Play investigations-

We wish all the mums a very happy Mother’s Day for Sunday.
