Carols night!

Dear families,

A reminder that our Christmas Concert is being held tomorrow night, Friday 3rd December commencing from 5.30pm.  The event will be held on the school oval.  Families are encouraged to bring a picnic rug or chair.  From 5pm there will be a Gala Auction and the canteen will open for drinks and sausage sizzle to purchase.

ELC/Reception classes will be first to perform at 5.30pm and we will then make our way through each year level, finishing with the year 5/6s.  We should finish about 7pm.  The raffle will be drawn after the year 1 classes have performed so younger students can go home earlier if desired.

Participation by all students is encouraged, although not compulsory.  We do ask that if your child wishes to attend, then they must also perform.  Please confirm if your child will be participating by advising your child’s class teacher.

We will be asking for your cooperation to ensure the concert is safe and complies with the directions we have been given.  To keep numbers within our density requirements we will be limiting tickets to 4 per family (this does not include students of Holy Family).

Bookings

There is an online system for parents to make a booking.   We are using this system because it is the most user-friendly approach for families to make a booking.  Please note that the booking system will close if capacity limit is reached before the event.  To make a booking, please follow the instructions below:

Go to https://www.schoolinterviews.com.au/code/ma8a7

or

Go to the school website at www.holyfamily.catholic.edu.au and click on Carols booking.

  • Enter your details
  • Add the details of up to 3 other people (if applicable)
  • When you click FINISH, a confirmation will be emailed to you. If you do not receive your email, please check your junk mail folder AND make sure you have entered your email address accurately.

If you are unable to access an electronic device to make a booking, please see the staff in the front office for assistance.

As you book, there will be some guidelines we need you to agree to and follow on the night. This includes keeping a safe distance from others, not bringing any glass or alcohol onto the school grounds and collecting your child from outside Curiosity at the conclusion of their performance. Also remember that if you, your child or anyone in your family is unwell, please do not attend our event. If we experience inclement or unsafe weather leading up to the event or on the night – we will be prepared to cancel the event.

Please keep the confirmation of your booking as you may need to show this when entering the school.  Only the people listed on the booking confirmation will be allowed onsite to ensure that we are following our density requirements.

You will be required to COVID-safe check in on entry.  Masks for adults and children over 12 are compulsory unless requirements change.

Please note:

  • All students will need to be accompanied and supervised by their parents  – children cannot turn up to school alone.
  • All students need to MEET THEIR TEACHER OUTSIDE CURIOSITY (near the Design Lab door) two items before their own. (Reminders will be made throughout the evening).  After they have performed, they can continue to watch the rest of the concert with their family
  • Parents and caregivers – please ensure you see Ms Pinneri or Miss Andersen to officially sign your child out after our carols performance from the Curiosity building, so we are aware that your child is safe and back in your care

  • Students may wear neat CASUAL clothes for the concert, preferably in Christmas colours (red, green, white, yellow) or accessorized with a Santa hat, tinsel etc.  If the class teacher sends a note home requesting something different please take note of those requirements.

Christmas hampers will be raffled and will be drawn at the Carols night after the Year 1 classes have performed.

History – significant item

Dear families,

Today in our History lesson, we discussed people, places and objects from the past.  Children have been asked to bring one significant item to school by this Wednesday 3rd November.  The item could be: a photo, figurine, toy, piece of clothing, medal etc from the past (from birth until now).  Children will engage in conversation with their peers and their teacher to discuss the item they have brought to school from the past.

Please be aware that this task will be performed in class during our History lesson on Wednesday and children are reminded that no toys are to be taken outside at recess or lunch time.  We will ensure that the items are brought back home Wednesday after school.

Kind regards,

Nadia and Hannah

History – how times change

This week in our History lessons, we have been discussing what life was like at home and at school for people from the past.  As a group, we created a list of questions that children might like to ask their parents/grandparents or family members, friends or neighbours of that generation.

The children were asked to choose 3 of the following questions and provide their person’s answers on a piece of paper.  We will discuss the answers in our History lessons next week.

Questions for our parents/grandparents about life when they were young:

  • What did you do for fun when you were young?
  • How did you get to school?
  • Where did you go to school?
  • What did your house look like?
  • How old were you when the television came out?
  • What did you learn about when you were young?
  • What kind of toys did you have?
  • What did your bedroom look like?
  • Tell me about your teacher.
  • What year were you born and where?
  • What did your school look like?
  • How old were you when you started and finished school?
  • Who were your friends when you were young?

Sharing and giving feedback in Writer’s Workshop

This term in Writer’s Workshop we have been learning about being active listeners when someone is sharing their book.  This is important so that we can give feedback to others about their books.

We learned about ways that we can give feedback to others with sentence starters.  Children became familiar with and used the terms “2 stars and 1 wish”.  Here are some examples of sentence starters:

We have also learned about asking open questions.  Children discovered that their questions usually started with ‘why’ or ‘how’.  Here are some examples of our students’ open questions:

To celebrate the completion of our study, we shared books in small groups this week in order to receive and give feedback to others.  This promoted oral language and conversations between students and their peers.

These practices could be used at home while you are reading to or listening to your children read.

Check out our sharing and giving feedback celebration in 1NP and 1HA!

Day 4 Home Learning – Monday 26th July

Good morning and welcome to marvellous Monday for our wonderful year 1s! Welcome back to week 2! We hope you have enjoyed the weekend by keeping safe and healthy with your families.

We are thinking of you all and we miss being in the classroom with you, but soon enough we will be back together again.

Please remember that during this time, your engagement in learning is wonderful to see but your wellbeing is our priority. Please see below the suggested learning tasks for today. Please take your time completing these and do your best with the resources you have available at home.

Reading

Please spend 5-10 minutes reading one of your levelled reader books if you have them with you. Otherwise, please enjoy the following audiobook below:

Take notice of the way Chris reads this book.  What do you notice about how he reads?

What is his face showing us?  What does he do with his voice?

Morning welcome

Today Ms Pinneri will welcome you to class and complete our usual routine of the roll call and our day of the week song! Click on the video below:

Literacy

Sound of the week

This week our sound is made up of two letters: ie – this is known as a digraph.

Please watch this video of Miss Andersen who explains our sound of the week!

Word study

Watch Miss Andersen’s video that explains our word study activity for today:

Maths

Time

Please watch the video below: ‘What time Is It?’

It’s TIME for your turn!

Using any materials you have at home (a paper plate, cardboard, pencils, textas etc) make your own clock.  Write the numbers from 1 to 12 on your clock.  Create a large and small clock hand.  Write the word minute on the large hand and the word hour on the small hand. Ms Pinneri used a split pin to hold the two clock hands together.  We can give you one when we return to school or you can use any materials that you have at home.We can’t wait to see your own home-made clocks!

Please watch the video below of Ms Pinneri, Humpty and their clock that they made:

Religion

In Religion today, we are focusing on culture.

What is culture?

What does culture mean to you?

What do you know about culture?

Watch the video below of children sharing about their family and culture:

In your learning journals, record what culture means to you. This could be words and pictures or any other way that you would like to present it.

Watch the video below of Ms Pinneri explaining your task:

This is what Ms Pinneri did for the task (Humpty helped a little too):

Brain Break

Please take part in the guided meditation below:

Science

Watch the video below of Miss Andersen explaining your Science task for today:

  • What happens to objects when you bend them?
  • Why do you think some objects bend more easily than others?
  • Are objects made of soft plastic more likely to bend than others? Why do you think that is?
  • Does being made of metal definitely mean an object is easy to bend? Why do you think that?

End of the day

Thank you for a great day of learning Year 1s!  We hope you have enjoyed learning from home.  Don’t forget to share your learning directly to the blog or by emailing Ms Pinneri or Miss Andersen.  See you tomorrow!

Click on the video below for our afternoon goodbye:
