Term 2: Week 7

Week 7 was another busy week of learning for us.

ENGLISH

We continued to read and, indeed, finished reading the short novel Kumiko and the Dragon during Reading Workshop. Some students used craft to show their understanding of the setting of the Dragon Sky Castle, which Kumiko visited, whilst others worked collaboratively to construct the setting in Minecraft. The rich description of the setting by the author helped us to visualise what it might look like.

In Writer’s Workshop we were focusing on word choice – in particular, synonyms for the word said, as well as adding adjectives and adverbs to liven up our writing and build a better visual image for our readers.  We also focused on reading our writing before re-commencing our stories and making revisions.

MATHEMATICS

We continued with our learning about time led my Mrs Stam. We were focusing on reading analogue and digital clocks, calculating time durations, interpreting timetables and making our own timetables – some of used Microsoft Word and learned how to insert tables and add/delete columns and rows, as well as adding and resizing images from the internet and changing fonts/font sizes.

HASS

We loved the book Window by Jeannie Baker. What a lot of observations we made about the changes we observed over time.

We then started to create the views  from our bedroom windows now and then began to visualise how they might look in a quarter of a century from now. These are works in progress, so next week, we will blog some our art.

SCIENCE

We continued learning more about solids and liquids, and how the changes that occur when we heat or cool them. This week we focused on FREEZING.

We made predictions based on our learning thus far, and our knowledge and understanding the world, to say what we thought should happen to three liquids and three solids when placed in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator overnight.

Perhaps the most exciting was the raw egg, which we agreed was a ‘hybrid’ material – with a solid exterior (shell) and a liquid interior (albumen and yolk). Most of us predicted correctly – the shell cracked and the liquid froze!

ASSEMBLY

Our buddy classes took to the stage on Friday for a performance of ‘We’re going on a knowledge hunt’, based on the famous ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’. Some of us even acted in part of the assembly as out buddies found our classroom on their knowledge hunt. What a fantastic job our little buddies and their amazing teachers did … we were all very proud! See if you can spot Ryley, James, Savannah, Ivan, Aleda, Eva and Sonny in the pictures below.

CURIOSITY

Now opening on Thursday of Week 8, the staff enjoyed a brief after school visit to the new building on Friday. It’s going to be wonderful when the children get to explore the new space – the acoustics are fantastic, the break out areas well designed, the stage will be heaps of fun for performing, the technology – sound system and screens are amazing , and the library space looks comfortable with all books easily accessible and inviting their readers …
