This term, the children have immersed themselves in sensory and loose parts play. Our OSHC educator participated in a professional development session on Loose Parts Play hosted by Maria from Outside the Box Learning Company.
Loose parts create richer environments for children, allowing them to explore their interests and curiosity. This type of play integrates learning and fun, enabling children to experiment and discover independently. Maria provided the children with an abundance of loose parts to rummage through, construct with, feel, observe, and converse about. It was wonderful to see the children engaging with such a variety of simple yet intriguing items, such as coloured stones, dry leaves, horseshoes, painted wood, sticks, old keys, and many more. The children worked together as a team, sharing, and communicating their ideas.
We have started to implement loose parts play alongside our sensory play experiences at OSHC. The children engaged in constructing loose parts play using OSHC cups, rubber bands, and straws without any instructions. They took these items to different areas of play, creating various structures and objects, all while collaborating and using their imaginations.
It’s been a joy to watch the children explore, create, and learn through these enriching play experiences.
